deren Ausmass
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

is sufficiently sensitive to further heat treatment. However, the cooling should not proceed so slowly that the precipitated carbide can break down into ferrite and tempered carbon. If this effect occurs, then it is hardly possible that there is certainty about the quality of the casting that it will deliver uniform work results in practice.
The next step is that the casting is further heated to a temperature slightly below the critical range, e.g. B. between 620 and 730 C, in order to give the cast the desired properties by breaking down the bonded carbon or cementite into ferrite and tempered carbon. After this low temperature decomposition is complete, the casting is removed from the furnace and allowed to cool. In order to prevent any further changes, it is advisable to cool down quickly. In practice, temperatures between 6200 C and 7300 C are advantageously used, u. between 10 and 60 hours as a rule.
The heat treatment illustrated in the table below shows examples of the temperature and the time of the treatment below the critical range.

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
changes with the physical properties and chemical composition as well as the heat treatment of the alloys. The high strength alloys have a spherical structure which extends essentially through the entire cross section, while the low strength alloys have a structure with randomly distributed cementite nodules which are embedded in ferrite. The alloys also contain tempered carbon, which makes the material different from steel. This spherical structure has not yet been known in the heat treatment of white iron castings; this is especially true for alloys which have the physical properties and chemical compositions mentioned here.
The presence of this structure indicates the physical changes during the heat treatment. These physical changes occur before the chemical breakdown of the cementite or iron carbide.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A method for annealing white cast iron, characterized in that white cast iron with an excess content of metals, in particular 0'6-1'5% manganese, which retards the decomposition of the cementite, at a temperature above the critical point, is advantageous 18 to 36 hours at about 9250 C, and then below the critical point, advantageously 20 hours at C, is annealed, so that the removal of the tempering carbon, which was formed during the decomposition of the cementite, is prevented and the remaining cementite in the treated piece is converted into spherical shape.
