<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
in Gang.

Combined teleprinter and telephone exchange system.
The invention relates to a combined telephone and telex system in which a number of subscriber stations are provided with telex devices. According to the invention, each subscriber station is provided with two double lines going out to the control center, via which telephone and telex connections can be maintained at the same time. This arrangement of two double lines enables the telephone connection to be used by a third party, even if there is a telex connection between two parties.
One purpose of the invention is to provide a system for telex or similar telecommunication connections as an auxiliary service in a central telephone system, u. zw. So that the telephone connection can always be used, regardless of whether the television friction connection is in use or not.
Another feature of the invention is a remote control device for starting the teleprinter in an unattended station.
A further feature of the invention is a device which prevents the time from being counted when an extension that does not itself have a telex to an unattended telex extension is called.
According to another feature of the invention, all circuits of the teletype subscribers are constructed and set up so that, when a call is made to an unattended station, circuit changes take place, which are controlled by the delay devices and one or more incoming characters to connect and operate the television driver.
According to a further feature of the invention, when an unattended telex extension is called, the counting character is only sent back until the characteristic character has been sent by the calling station and received in the unattended telex extension.
Two embodiments of the invention are described; In one system, telephone and telex options are alternately provided via one line, while in the second system each subscriber has two lines and can telephone and telex at the same time via different lines.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 shows subscriber telex equipment and circuitry for single line operation. Figure 2 shows subscriber television equipment and circuitry for dual line operation which can be reached with a single number, such as a private branch exchange.

connected. A capacitor M and a relay A, which is responsive to ringing current, are connected in series with the subscriber's call facility.
In the teleprinter equipment there is a Spreefrefrequenzstromgenerator, and the surge can z. B. be sent to the central line after the spring writer code by means of a spring writer transmitting device. These Spreehfrequen / current surges go to the receiving station and are recorded there by a known detector, e.g. B. from a detector tube or a speaking frequency relay.
The resulting current surges from the output circuit of the detector are then
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
used to control the direct current in the winding of the receiving magnet of the teleprinter in the receiving station and this again controls the printing of the message.
EMI2.1
AC mains, an amplifier tube AMP, an output tube D, which is coupled to the line connections via a resistor R4, and an oscillator 0 for generating speech frequency currents.
The power source for operating this equipment (high voltage network, batteries or other power sources) is connected to terminals 1 and 2. 3 and 4 are connections at which the current controlled by the output of the tube D for operating the teletype receiver or other apparatus can be drawn off. 6, 7 and 8 are terminals for controlling the flow of speech frequency current to terminals 9 and 10, which are connected to the central line during normal operation. If terminals 6 and 8 are connected to one another and 7 remains open, speech frequency current flows to the line connected to 9 and 10. If terminals 7 and 8 are connected to one another and 6 remains open, no speech frequency current flows to the line connected to terminals 9 and 10.
The connections to terminals 6, 7, 8, which are necessary so that the speech frequency current surges can flow from terminals 9 and 10 to the line according to a teletype code, are controlled by the transmission contacts TM of the teletype machine. Instead of the oscillator, a special winding on the teletype motor can be used to generate the speech frequency signal stream. The detector can be a tube detector or a voice frequency relay.
During the transmission, the teletype contacts TM regulate the flow of speech frequency current from the oscillator tube 0 to the line via the transformer T \.
If the tongue is on the "separating" (lower) contact, then speech frequency current flows in the primary winding of the transformer Ti; if the tongue is on the "sign" (upper) contact, the transformer T1 is switched off and short-circuited from the anode of the oscillator tube. No current therefore flows in the primary winding of Ti during the "sign" signal.
The secondary of T is part of a series circuit that contains the line and input circuits of the amplifier detector. The input circuit of the detector is connected between the two halves of the secondary winding of Ti so that the arrangement is symmetrical with respect to the line terminals.
If the teletype transmitter TM is set to "isolating current", then speech frequency current flows in the series output circuit of Ti, so that a voltage is generated in the line and also at the input terminals of the amplifier detector. This latter voltage, after amplification and detection, causes the local telex typing apparatus to operate, so that a magazine is received in the broadcasting station. Before proceeding to the description of the mode of operation of the detector part of the circuit, it should be noted that the output power of the oscillator to the line can be adjusted with the aid of the resistors shown in the feedback and output circuit.
The oscillator tube is biased by the voltage drop in the heater circuit, and the amplifier and output tube filaments are negative with respect to the oscillator because all of the filaments are connected in series.
If the circuit is used for reception, the teletype transmitter is connected to the "draw" contact, and the primary winding of T is short-circuited. If one neglects all of the losses in this transformer, then all of the speech frequency current from the line is used to generate a voltage in the input circuit of the detector. This input circuit consists of the terminal resistor R4 and the step-up transformer T. The step-up transformed voltage on the secondary winding of T2 is pressed onto the grid of the amplifier tube.
This tube acts simply as a voltage amplifier, and the amplified voltage that is applied to the primary winding of the rectifier input transformer T; is applied, is fed to the grid of an anode detector. A resistor is connected between the input transformer Ta and the grid of the amplifier tube in order to limit the output power of the amplifier tube when working over short lines and the voltage at the input of the amplifier is high. Under such conditions, grid current appears in the amplifier tube and its flowing through resistor R1 increases the negative bias of the tube.
By using a suitable resistor, the output power can be prevented from exceeding a certain value, and in this way overloading of the tube is avoided.
The capacitor in the oscillator circuit, which is connected between the positive anode and the positive filament feed, prevents a large part of the speech frequency current from the oscillator from passing through this resistor and thus continuously applying speech frequency voltage to the grid of the amplifier.
The resistor R4, which is connected in parallel to the input transformer Ta of the amplifier tube AMP, is used to establish a reliable line termination.
The stepped-up voltage on the secondary winding of the rectifier input transformer Ta is rectified by the full-wave rectifier X with a central tap, and a DC voltage is generated across the resistor RG. The pulsating component of the voltage is smoothed by the capacitor Y.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Resistor A, bridged by capacitor Y, is connected in series with the grid circuit of output tube D, and the grid circuit is completed by a connection to the negative end of the filament of the tube.
It is therefore when no character is received from the equipment (i.e. when none via jssg
Voltage is generated) the grid voltage of the tube D zero and its anode current large.
The winding T of the teleprinter magnet can be connected directly to the anode circuit of the output tube. Although not shown, a capacitor is connected in parallel with the teletype magnet coil. This usually forms part of the teletype itself and is therefore not shown in the detector circuit.
When a character is received, the rectified voltage from Rs is applied to the grid of the output tube, and the rectifier X is arranged so that the voltage biases the grid of the tube negatively. The negative bias lowers the anode current of the tube (which flows through the windings of the television driver) to practically zero, and it remains zero until the end of the character.
When the sign ends, the rectified voltage across Rs disappears and the anode current of the output tube returns to its high normal value.
The power supply unit is of known design.
The equipment 1 is therefore arranged in such a way that no current flows in the apparatus connected to terminals 3 and 4 when the speech frequency current flows from terminals 9 and 10 to the line or from the line to terminals 9 and 10. However, if no speech frequency current flows from terminals 9 and 10 to the line or from the line to terminals 9 and 10, then current flows into the apparatus connected to terminals 3 and 4. The telex machine for which the unattended equipment is designed has various mechanical and electrical characteristics such as the following:
The machine is driven by a motor M, which receives supply current only when the contacts Si are closed.
The opening and closing of i is controlled by an automatic device (on the teleprinter) which works in such a way that it only closes the contacts S'i when the armature of the teleprinter receiving magnet moves from a position (referred to as the "disconnected" position ) into another position (marked with the "sign" position). Actuation of the armature in the other direction, i.e. H. from the "character" position to the "separation" position does not cause ssi to be closed; however, if these contacts are already closed, such movement will not interrupt them.
Similarly, if they are already closed, they are not interrupted by the movement of the armature from the "separation" position to the "sign" position.
EMI3.1
Contacts Oi are closed, d. H. if the engine is running and there is no movement of the armature of the jumping marker from "disconnected position" to "character position" for about 1% minutes, their lower ones
Leaves contact and about 1 second later closes its upper contact. At the same time the contacts ssi are opened and the motor stops.
When the automatic device is actuated (by moving the teleprinter magnet armature from "disconnected position" to "character position") to close Si and start the motor, however, the lower contact of the tongue closes before it leaves its upper contact. The interruption of therefore only takes place just before the engine stops and not when it starts.
The movement of the spring pen magnet armature is controlled by the current flow through the magnet winding T. If no current flows through T, the armature is held in its "disconnected position" by a spring. If, however, current flows through T, the armature moves into its "toe" position.
When the current flow ceases, it returns to the "disconnected" position under the influence of the spring.
Let us first consider the equipment shown as an unattended subscriber station. The motor of the teletype machine is not activated because the contacts jS'i are interrupted. is closed at its lower contact and the equipment I receives no current, and no speech frequency current flows from terminals 9 and 10. All relays are in the rest position, as shown, and the teleprinter magnet armature is held in the "disconnected" position by the spring, since no current can flow through its winding T.
The unattended station is required by a subscriber, and therefore ringing currents go from the control center via the usual lines a, b and the contacts fiez to the subscriber station SS.
The alarm clock rings, and since A responds to ringing current, it is activated by every power surge received from the control center. Pressing A closes contacts a1. When a1 closes, high-voltage current is applied from the supply current terminals P, P to relay AA, which is a slow-working thermal relay, and relay AL1 does not respond for a while. During this time, the called party can answer the call if he is present. After some time, the successive surges that have passed through the filament of AA under the control of relay A will have raised its temperature enough to operate AA.
By actuation
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
from AA the contacts aal are opened to interrupt the heating electronics circuit and the contacts aa., and aa4 are closed. Contacts aa2 hold relays jlA and gag, connect the power source to the
Terminals 1 and 2 of equipment I and with the buzzer buts. The teleprinter magnet winding T also receives current, whereby the armature is placed in the "character" position and the motor is switched on. The contacts aa3 are also closed and apply a voltage of -50 volts with respect to earth to the line a.
This voltage is used in a manner well known in self-extension telephony to actuate relays in the central office which shut off the ringing current from lines a, b. Relay A stops working. Since the supply current has already been connected to equipment I and since no speech frequency current flows from or to terminals 9 and 10, since TM is at its "sign" - (upper) contact, current flows from terminals 3 and 4 through relay C being pressed. Relay C sets the output of buzzer J in C2? M to the line, indicating that the spring recorder equipment is being connected. The tongue of contact Cl rests on the lower contact and thereby feeds current to the slowly operating thermal relay E, which responds after 4 seconds.
The contacts Cl interrupt the heating circuit of E and C2, keep relay E in the working position.
Relay D does not yet respond, however, because the power supply through contacts Cl and f4 is interrupted. Contacts C3, e4, which act as follow-up contacts, switch over. First C3 is closed and keeps the current

from. Relay AA therefore returns to its rest position; and the contacts aa2, aa3, aa4 are opened. The contacts close the circuit of the relay F, which responds and, in the case of fi, the equipment with the
EMI4.2
wieklung T ab and f4 prepares a circuit for relay D.
Although the internal arrangement of I is such that there is a direct direct current path between terminals 9 and 10, lines a and b have not yet been crossed by the direct current loop.
EMI4.3
is. The call is therefore not yet counted for the calling subscriber.
The circuits could be arranged in such a way that the switchover would be dependent on a signal from the calling subscriber or the control center instead of taking place automatically; on the other hand, automatic devices could be arranged both for switching over to the teleprinting equipment and for putting it into operation.
Let us first assume the case that the calling subscriber has no telex equipment, then after a certain time he will no longer hear the call acknowledgment, except for the buzzer signaling, and nothing more happens after that. He will therefore hang up his phone and interrupt the connection at his end.
However, relays C, B and F are still activated in the unattended station. After a certain time, the current flowing through the thermal delay relay BB, which is connected in parallel with relay E, will raise the temperature of the filament enough to actuate BB. The contacts bb1 open the heating circuit. The contacts bb2 then interrupt the circuit of the relay E and this returns to its rest position. Contacts e1 are closed, contacts eu are opened and the power supply for I and relays E, F, C and BB are switched off. Contacts efi switch and the line is connected to station SS instead of equipment I. Relay BB returns to its rest position a moment later.
The unattended station is therefore ready to receive when a new call arrives and the call has not been counted at the calling party.
Relay BB need not be provided, although it is advantageous to save time, since the television set is provided with contacts S2 which, as stated above, open after 1 minutes if no signal is sent or received, and so initiate the release.
Assuming now that the calling party has voice frequency television rubbing equipment, as soon as the buzzer tone stops, he must send a surge of voice frequency power over the line to the unattended station. The way in which this is done and how the equipment is started by hand will be described later.
The speech frequency surge is received by equipment I through terminals 9 and 10 (capacitor N has such a capacitance that it offers little resistance to speech frequency current) and, as described earlier, this interrupts the flow of current from terminals 3 and 4 through relays C. 0 therefore returns to its rest position and the tongue of Cl lies on the normally closed contact. Since f4 is closed, high current is applied to relay D, which responds. The contacts dl, which are uninterruptible changeover contacts, switch over; the tongue first connects terminals 4 of equipment I to the free end of winding T of the teleprinter magnet and then disconnects the free end of the winding of relay C from terminal 4 of I.
The contacts d2 interrupt the circuit of the relay BB, so that it will not respond later and relay E can return to its rest position. The contacts il3 short-circuit the capacitor N so that a direct current loop is connected to the lines alb and the call to the calling subscriber is counted. Contacts d4 open the buzzer circuit.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
When the speech frequency surge has ended, the current can flow again from terminals 3 and 4 of equipment I, but now it flows through winding T of the teleprinter magnet. The armature of the teleprinter magnet therefore moves from its "separation" position to the "character" position.
The equipment is then ready to receive the telex message.
No further voice frequency current steps will be received from the line after completion of the reporting and approximately 1 minute after the last movement of the teleprinter magnet armature from "disconnected" to "character" the automatic device is actuated so that the tongue of 82 leaves its lower contact. This cuts off the supply current from relays D, E and F and from equipment I. No current can therefore flow through the winding T of the teleprinter magnet and the armature returns to its "disconnected position". Relay D returns to its rest position and contacts d1 again connect terminal 4 of I to relay C instead of T. The contacts there cancel the short circuit of the capacitor N.
Relay E returns to its rest position and contacts Pa open and thus prevent the supply of current if the tongue of 82 closes its upper contact one second later. Contacts f1 toggle and connect line a to subscriber station instead of voice frequency equipment 1. Finally, the automatic device lets the tongue of 82 close its upper contact and breaks the contacts of 81, stopping the teleprinter motor. The unattended station is then ready to receive further calls in its original state.
If the equipment shown in the drawing is considered to be that of the calling subscriber, if he has received the desired connection in the usual way on the way of the telephone, but does not receive an answer, he will press a push button K for a few seconds after the call acknowledgment has ceased . This button is called the "write button" and has five special ones
EMI5.1
jE'z supplies heavy current to relay E and K3 in equipment I, buzzer Bu and winding T.
The current flow through T causes the television driver magnet armature to move from the "disconnect" to the "sign" position, and this actuates the automatic device so that the contacts Si are closed and the motor starts up. The contacts K4 raise the Short-circuit of the primary winding of the output transformer Ti, while K5 gives voice frequency current to the line. After four seconds the relays B, F respond and relay C drops out when the current surge is sent out.
Relay D is therefore activated and switches off the buzzer. The button is then triggered. Since the contacts dl switched off the relay C, the contacts Ci cannot interrupt the supply circuit for the relay D, and since the contacts e3 remain closed, the relay D remains actuated even if the "write" key is released. The speech frequency surge over the line to the (unattended) called station causes this equipment to be put into operation as described above. Corresponding to the mode of operation of the speech frequency equipment 1, this current surge is also received by the detector in FIG. 1 and the current flow in the winding T of the teleprinter magnet is therefore interrupted.
If the power surge has ended, d. H. if the "write" key is released, current flows through T again, the armature moves from its "separating" position to the "sign" position. The equipment is then ready to send a telex.
It is clear that the remote receiver must not be hung up until the relay E, F has spoken and the central line of the subscriber station SS has been switched off through the contacts fi; if the remote receiver is hung up earlier, the call is interrupted.
EMI5.2
has been completely put into operation, the calling subscriber does not need to do anything further when the call is over, since his own equipment stops in exactly the same way as the equipment in the unattended station (about 1 # minutes after the last signal was sent).
Of course, the telex equipment described can also be used for telex communication between two subscribers who are both present in their station.
In this case, each participant starts their own equipment by pressing the write key after the normal telephone connection is established.
If the participants wish to resume the telephone connection after the television traffic, then everyone must first lift the receiver (if it was not picked up during the telex) and then briefly press a second button, the "telephone" button,
The telephone button has two sets of contacts, Y1 and Y2, of which the first (Y1) must be closed before the other (Y2) is opened. If you press the button, then Y1 maintains the DC loop on the line and Y2 then interrupts the supply of current to the relays D, E and F, which are in

station sus, and telephone traffic can begin. The teleprinter motors run for a while until they are stopped by the automatic device.
The idea is that the "write" and "talk" buttons do not have to be pushbuttons, but if tippers are used it is better. if they do not have a locking position. you

are intended to be easily distinguishable from one another and can be attached to the base of the telephone set or to any other suitable location. If the station is not to work in an unattended manner, then all the relays shown in FIG. 1 can be omitted and only a single button can be provided. The key would have follow-up contacts to switch the connection of one or both lines from the telephone station to the teleprinter set, and simple closing contacts to connect the teleprinting equipment to the power network or the like.
The equipment described above can also be given other features.
Other circuit arrangements are also possible, e.g. B. an alarm clock with contacts on
EMI6.1
Another method of disabling an unattended teletype station after a message has been completed could be without the use of contacts 82. A thermal delay relay can be connected in series with the television driver solenoid winding T and arranged so that it only responds when it and winding T are continuously energized for quite a long time (e.g. 2 minutes), which would happen if during During this time no speech frequency surge was received from the line. If the thermal relay then finally responds, it would interrupt a pair of normally closed contacts in the supply line to terminal P2 of the power supply instead of contacts 82.
Opening these contacts would shut down the equipment in the same way that 82 does this when 82 is operated by the automatic device of the remote electrical apparatus.
It is of course not essential for the equipment 1 that the relays AA, BB, D, B and F and the motor M are fed from the same power source. However, different power sources would make additional contacts on the relay necessary.
The circuit has the great advantage of simplicity. It is not necessary to change the existing telephone exchanges; the few additional telephones are installed in the subscribers' homes. Ordinary telephone lines are used, and with the aid of the tube detector any similarly equipped subscriber can obtain a telephone connection via any line (trunk, trunk or subscriber line) over which telephone traffic is possible.
The operation according to Fig. 2 is as follows:
The subscriber station has two outgoing lines 1, 11 from the contact banks of the call switch, each outgoing line containing plus, minus and P wires. Special pairs of conductors or double lines connect the subscriber's telephone or teleprinter with the control center, where a relay group assigned to the subscriber is provided to connect the telephone line to each outgoing line and the telex line to the first outgoing line. Both outgoing lines have the same number and are treated as an extension group.
The first outgoing line is usually connected to the subscriber telephone line but can be switched to the telex line while the telephone line is then connected to the second outgoing line which is usually completely disconnected. If both outgoing lines are free, an incoming call seizes the first outgoing line 1. The subscriber answers the telephone call in the usual way and the two parties decide to switch to the teletype machine. This is done by briefly pressing a button next to the telex in each station. Pressing the button causes the machine to start and the teleprinter to send back voice frequency current.
The carrier current operates a relay in the central terminal equipment of the teletype line. The button is released and the handset is hung up.
When the key is released, the telex line is connected to the first outgoing line I, which was previously connected to the telephone line, and the telephone line is connected to the other outgoing line 11. Telecommunication is now carried out via the first line I by means of speech frequency surges. At the same time, the second outgoing line II, with which the telephone line is now connected, is made free for another call.
The contacts Se, Re in the dashed rectangle are mechanical contacts of the teletypewriter, the contacts Re being normally closed, while Se is automatically closed during the transmission of each character. Contacts S, M are the toe and toe contacts of the telex.
If a telephone connection has been established and a shot has been given to switch to telex, the contacts KI, Kz, K3 are actuated when the write button is pressed, a relay AC from the high-voltage network MS is excited via the contacts Ti of the button and the high-voltage network As with the heating and anode current Power supply unit BE connected.
A relay BC responds via ssfs through the heating voltage and closes a parallel circuit for a relay DC, which responds.
A relay CC responds in the anode circuit of the oscillator and closes a contact ce, shunted to contact ae, in the circuit of the power supply unit. The speech frequency current operates the teletype receiving relay through the detector. Relay T sets the machine (mechanically)
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
in progress. The machine closes its high-voltage contacts S 1, and a relay NA parallel to it is actuated.
The speech frequency current is connected to the telex line via the contacts K 2 of the key and actuates an alternating current relay X, which is in series with a capacitor in a bridge to
EMI7.1
the impedance of the relay MA is removed from the lines of the teletype.
If the write button is released, the speech frequency current flow to the teletype line stops, so that relay X drops out, and since X dropped out and Y is addressed, the relays YY and Z in the control center are operated in parallel via X "Y" Y., And connect the first outgoing line with the teletype machine and the second with the telephone line at Z3, Z ,.
A relay MA in the telex line is operated via the line loop. A non-inductive resistor is provided in parallel with relay MA to prevent distortion of the telephony signals, and the opening of contacts ma2 prevents the relay MA from being shorted. Relay Z switches off the busy potential of the P-wire of the second outgoing line and connects the P-wire with the relay PA. If a new telephone call is made from the subscriber station, the outgoing line to 11 is seized. Relay PA is actuated via the central ground and keeps relay Z actuated, regardless of the operating status of the teletype machine, in order to keep the telephone line in connection with the second outgoing line. After termination of the telex connection, if (e.g.
B.) For 30 seconds no character has been sent or received, contacts B 1 of the machine are opened.
Relay SA drops out and the engine stops.
Relay AC drops out because the mains circuit, which was kept closed by contacts SA, shunted to a normally open contact Xi of the write button, is now interrupted.
Relay BC drops out through AC and if BC drops out while DC is still activated, the line loop is interrupted bc2, dc2, so that relay MA drops out.
Relay AC switches off the heating voltage from the oscillator at the contacts (M, and when the tube cools down, relay CC in the anode circuit slowly drops out. This switches off the power supply unit from the mains, and relay DC, which was kept connected to the heating voltage, drops and closes the loop again. The loop was interrupted during the time in which relay CC dropped out.
This caused the equipment in the control center to be reset, relay Y drops out. Relay YY drops out.
If relay PA is not activated, relay Z drops out.
If relay PA is actuated as a result of a conversation on the second outgoing line, relay Z remains actuated and the teletype control loop is connected to battery and earth via the normally open contacts of Z and normally closed contacts of Y and X. Relay MA is activated again and lights up a monitoring lamp GL. The first line is artificially occupied via P A2, Y1 by earth.
If the telephone connection is ended, relay PA drops out, relay Z follows. Relay MA drops out, lamp GL goes out.
The entire equipment of the telex subscriber is now at rest.
It will be noted that the telex number and telephone number are the same and that only one connection needs to be dialed.
It will also be noted that both parties can always be reached for telex connections with their correct telephone number.
Long distance calls, long distance calling and telephone traffic in general are therefore in no way altered by the addition of teleprinter equipment.
Another possibility can be provided to receive a telex in an unattended station, the teleprinting circuit being automatically connected to the line instead of the telephone subscriber station if there is no response to the call from the control center after a certain time. In this circuit, the call is counted by the calling party and the call is not counted until a telefax is received at the called end. With this facility in the case of unattended stations, it is possible for the calling subscriber to check whether he has got the correct connection before he starts telex.
This can be done without counting.
The teletyping equipment consists of a two-tube amplifier detector which, as described for Fig. 1, works directly on the teletyping relay, and a tube oscillator which is used to supply the speech frequency current, although it is also possible to provide the motor of the teletyping apparatus with an additional power, to generate the character stream. The arrangement of the transmitter coils is made so that any interruption in the line interrupts the recording in the transmitting station. The writing in the sending and receiving stations is therefore completely identical.
Any frequency in the range of 400-500 Hertz can be used for the speech frequency current as the oscillator is designed to make this easily possible. This frequency is well above

The power sent into the line is 5 MW, which value was determined with regard to the normal requirements for voice frequency telegraph systems.
