Siebkreisanordnung.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Sieve circle arrangement.
More particularly, the present invention relates to a radio frequency tuning system for radio receiving apparatus of the superheterodyne type.
According to the invention, a double coupling is provided between the antenna and the tuned circuits; the characteristics of the two coupling components are chosen so that they will be approximately the same and opposite at the intermediate frequency.
A superheterodyne radio receiver is particularly sensitive to signs of three frequencies; I). the desired symbol frequency, the image frequency, which is just as much above the local oscillation frequency as the desired frequency is below the local oscillation frequency, and the intermediate frequency, d. i. the difference between the desired characters and the spatial frequencies. So far, the reception of any other than the desired symbol frequency has been more selective through the use of a plurality of symbols between the symbol recording and the first detector or
EMI1.1
a plurality of variable tuning elements which, while maintaining a high degree of selectivity, prevent downsizing of size and reduction of manufacturing cost.
Devices have already been found which prevent the reception of image frequency symbols without the involvement of numerous filter circuits. The object of this invention is to provide a simplified filter circuit which requires only a single tunable circuit and which prevents not only the reception of image frequency symbols but also the reception of intermediate frequency symbols.
In practicing the invention, the modulator or first detector of a superheterodyne radio receiver is coupled to the antenna by a single tunable circuit. The tunable circuit is coupled to the antenna circuit by means of a two-way coupling containing oppositely varying impedances; the transmission effects of these impedances are equal and opposite at the intermediate frequency, and in this way transmission of said intermediate frequency currents to the tunable circuit is prevented.
In addition, the antenna circuit, together with the impedances contained in it, is made resonant at a frequency which is close to the lower end of the working range suitable for this coupling, in order to increase the counteraction of the entire circuit at the low frequency end of the range to allow an essentially uniform mode of operation of the network over the entire area.
In the drawings, FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram of the input circuit to the first detector or modulator of a superheterodyne radio receiver; FIG. 2 is a schematic diagram illustrating a modification of the circuit shown in FIG. 1.
In Fig. 1 the antenna 10 and earth 11 are connected by an antenna circuit 17, consisting of the coil 12 shunted by a small capacitance 13, the lower part 3-4 of the main tuning inductance JM, the coupling capacitor 15 and the power control resistor 16 The antenna circuit just described, the inductance of which is primarily that of FIG. 12, along with its associated capacitances, is made resonant for any frequency which is near the lower end of the range to which the circuit is most suitably tuned. For example, in a superheterodyne receiver for the broadcast range, the antenna circuit 17 can be made resonant at 600 kilohertz.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The tunable circuit 18 is composed of the coil-M, the coupling capacitor 16 and the variable tuning capacitor 19 by which the circuit is tuned to respond to the desired symbol frequency. The tuning capacitor 19 can be mechanically connected to the control element of the oscillation frequency circuit for one-button control in the tuning of the receiver, as is already known in the art.
The coupling between the antenna circuit 11 and the tuned circuit 18 is established by the common inductance 3-4 of coil 14, the mutual inductance between the part 5-4 of the coil 14 and its remainder, and by the series coupling capacitor 15. The inductive component of the mutual reactance coupling changes directly with the frequency of the characters, while the capacitive component of the coupling varies inversely with this frequency. The two coupling components are chosen so that their own coupling effects between circuits 17 and 18 will be exactly the same and opposite at the frequency to which the intermediate frequency amplifiers are tuned. These couplings are z.
B. set in a superheterodyne receiver when using a 450-kilohertz intermediate frequency that there is no resulting coupling effect between these two circles at 450 kilohertz. The coupling capacitor 15 should preferably have a capacitance that is five to thirty times the maximum of the variable capacitor 19, in order to prevent an unnecessary reduction in the tuning range of the circuit 18 when the capacitor 19 is changed while still allowing sufficient reactance to work satisfactorily Apparatus is taken care of.
The small capacitance 13 together with coil 12 forms a barrier to reduce interference at frequencies which are higher than the tuning range; however, this barrier does not significantly affect the effect of the circles with respect to characters or intermediate frequencies.
The grid of the modulator 20 is connected to the tuned circuit 18 by means of a tap 2 on the coil 14. The tap 2 is arranged such that here the image frequency voltage has zero potential with respect to earth at at least one point in the tuning range of the circle 18.
EMI2.1
pressure is achieved near the low frequency end of the band. The purpose of the capacitor 21 is to make the image radio frequency suppression resulting from the tapped coil 14 more uniform over the entire range, and its value is preferably chosen so that the best suppression is obtained near the high frequency end of the band.
The modulator 20 should preferably be a screen grid tube to ensure a purely capacitive grid load on the tapped part of the tuned circuit.
The oscillation frequency voltage, which is provided by a visual oscillation circuit represented by the visual oscillation source 22, can be impressed on the cathode circuit of the tube 20, as is usual in superheterodyne circuits. The details of the oscillation cycle do not form part of this invention and therefore need not be described in further detail.
The anode of the modulator 20, which converts the incoming audio-modulated carrier frequency symbols into audio-modulated two-frequency symbols, is connected to the direct current source 24 through the primary coil 23 of an intermediate frequency transformer. In this way, the audio-modulated intermediate frequency current is supplied to the radio receiver 27 which is responsive to the intermediate frequency, amplified therein and reproduced in the usual manner. The screen grid of the tube 20 is supplied with a voltage by the source 24 that is appropriate for it.
The details of the remaining circuitry of the receiver are well known in the art and need not be described further.
FIG. 2 shows a modified arrangement of the input circuit of a superheterodyne radio receiver according to this invention. In this figure, the corresponding parts are given the same reference numerals as in FIG. 1, only if their values differ from those of the corresponding part in FIG. 1, a superscript is added. In this circuit, the antenna circuit 17 includes a coil 25 which is inductively coupled to the tuning coil 14. The capacitor 21 ′, which supports the image frequency suppression, is connected to the connection path between the antenna inductance 12 ′ and the primary coil 25, as shown.
This connection path is connected to ground through a resistor 26; the resistor 26 is to prevent interference at frequencies higher than the tuning range. Otherwise this circuit arrangement is similar in every respect to that of FIG. 1, with the exception of the arrangement of the tap 3 '.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the inductive coupling between the antenna circuit 17 and the tuned circuit 18 includes the mutual inductance between the primary coil 25 and the L 'inductance 14, the mutual inductance between part 3'-4 of coil 14 and the rest of them Divide and the self-inductance of part 3'-4 of the inductance 14. The capacitive coupling 15 is chosen with respect to the sum of the inductive couplings so that there will be essentially no resultant coupling between the antenna circuit 17 and the tuned circuit 18 at the intermediate frequency. In this circuit, the antenna circuit is preferably also made resonant for a frequency in the lower part of the tuning range, e.g.
