Pistons, in particular light metal pistons for internal combustion engines.
In pistons in which the pin boss is directly connected to the piston skirt, the piston skirt is often reinforced at this point in an undesirable manner due to the larger amount of material in the bolt boss. Furthermore, the relatively hot bolt eye forces the adjacent parts of the jacket to undergo irregular deformation. If the design of the piston is chosen so that a deformation of the piston skirt should occur when it is heated, it is influenced in a disruptive manner.
According to the invention, the piston pin bosses are completely or partially separated from the piston skirt by suitable slits.
1-3 show an application of the subject invention to pistons in which at
EMI1.1
The support rib connecting the piston pin bosses to the piston head is designed as a profile rib. 8 and 9 or 10 and 11 show two embodiments in which slots which run concentrically to the piston pin boss separate this from the piston skirt. FIGS. 12-15 show another embodiment of a piston in which the support surfaces of the piston are cylindrical.
The piston skirt 2 is partially separated from the piston head 1 by slits 3 which block off heat. The bolt eyes 4 are connected to one another and to the piston head and the piston skirt by ribs 5 and 7. As can be seen from Fig. 3, the piston skirt is the piston

knife cl 'in the direction of the y-y axis.
The mode of operation of such a piston is such that during operation, due to the uneven heating, a greater expansion of the piston skirt occurs in the direction of the piston pin axis x-x, whereby it approaches the round shape. So there is a deliberate deformation of the piston skirt in operation.
As can be seen from Fig. 3, two slots 6 are provided on both sides of the piston pin, which
EMI1.3
It can be seen that the piston pin bosses 4 are connected to the piston only at their lower part, approximately the width of the rib, and at their upper part, approximately the width of the ribs 5.
If the piston were to be designed without these slots and the full width of the pin bearing were to be connected to the piston skirt, then the one with. 3, the piston skirt can be pressed out at this point. By making the slots according to the invention, the piston skirt can deform almost over the entire circumference without any influence and the occurrence of irregular shapes is prevented.
4 and 5 show in longitudinal section and in cross section an embodiment in which the piston skirt is also partially separated from the piston pin bosses by slots 6. The support rib that connects the piston pin bosses to the piston head and the piston skirt is

eyes connects to the piston head and a correspondingly sehmaler held part, the web M, and the rib 7, which connects the pin eyes with the piston skirt.
In this version of the piston, the support rib is a profile rib with a double-T-shaped transverse
EMI2.1
the piston pin bosses and the piston skirt, while the connection of the piston pin bosses to the piston head is accomplished by the other parts of the double T-rib.
In FIGS. 6 and 7, instead of the double-T cross-section of the support rib, a U-shaped cross-section is selected: instead of one rib 11, two are used. The ribs 11 run parallel to the piston pin axis along the piston pin and extend on the lateral sides of the piston to form two vertical support ribs which carry the piston pin bosses. The connection between the piston pin bosses and the piston skirt is established by the connecting rib 10 of the support profile.
8 and 9 show an embodiment in which the piston pin bosses are partially separated from the piston skirt by two slots 8 running along the circumference of the pin boss. In this case, too, the piston pin boss is only connected to the piston skirt and the piston head above and below the pin bearing approximately in the width of the support rib.
In the embodiment according to FIGS. 10 and 11, the bolt eye is separated from the piston skirt by the annular slot 9. - The bolt eyes -1 are connected at their upper part to the piston head and the piston skirt only by the rib 5, and at their lower part to the piston skirt by the rib 7.
Since the slots 6 in the embodiments according to FIGS. 1-7 partially cut through the piston pin bearing, two openings are created in the bearing, which provide the injection oil, which is thrown up into the piston by the crank mechanism of the engine. The openings created by arranging the slots 6 are in this way at the same time as lubricating openings for the
EMI2.2
the piston pin eye and from there to the piston pin, which it helps to lubricate.
The slots 6 provided in FIGS. 1-7 can be used to hold a safety device for the piston pin, for example by inserting a resilient fork into these slots, which snaps into a screwed-in annular groove of the piston pin according to the action of a snap ring and the Prevents displacement of the piston pin in its longitudinal axis.
The oval or elliptical machining of the selected in the execution described so far

subject to cylindrical machining, protrude from the shape of the shell so that the non-transmissive shell surfaces subject to deformation can remain unprocessed.
In the embodiment according to FIGS. 12-15, A and A 'represent the cylindrically machined casing parts. B and B 'represent the oval or elliptical cast parts. A reinforcement according to curve D is provided on the cylindrically machined casing segments A and A', which represents a curve of increasing flexural strength.
13 further illustrates the above-mentioned arrangement, according to which the support surfaces A and 1 'protrude from the piston shape to such an extent that only these surfaces are cut during cylindrical machining, while the recessed jacket surfaces B and B' remain raw .
EMI2.4
Piston end. As a result, the arc length of the jacket parts B and B 'increases after the piston head. This is done in order to take account of the greater thermal expansion and the associated deformation to which the parts of the lateral surface B, B 'located closer to the piston head are subject.
The
EMI2.5
occurs, is weakest at the open end of the piston skirt and grows towards the piston head according to a curve, the shape of which results from the temperature profile in the piston skirt during operation (Fig. 12).
The course of the outer boundary lines of the reinforcement de <longitudinal section of the load-bearing casing parts A, A 'shown in FIG. 14 and the type of cross-sectional reinforcement made according to FIGS. 12 and 15 ensure that the wing surfaces are cylindrical in shape when heated

The bores E visible in FIGS. 12 and 15 of the part of the support rib 7 for the piston skirt located below the bolt eye serves to balance the weight of the piston.

which is necessary to compensate for the weight differences that occur when the pistons are cast.
