<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Electric glow discharge tube having an electrode containing an alkali metal.
The invention relates to an electric glow discharge tube. Those with gas or
Vapor-filled and self-discharging discharge tubes are used for different
Purposes used e.g. B. as signal lamps, relays for converting electrical current fluctuations into light fluctuations, for example in devices for the reception of images transmitted by telegraphic or radiotelegraphic means.
Such glow discharge tubes often have the disadvantage that the voltage at which the discharge starts is quite high and that this ignition voltage is significantly higher than the operating voltage, i.e. H. the voltage between the electrodes once the discharge has been established. It has already been proposed to reduce the ignition voltage and the operating voltage by coating the cathode of the tube with an alkali metal.
The invention aims to reduce these stresses even further and also to improve other properties of the tube.
The electric glow discharge tube according to the invention has an electrode containing an alkali metal. The alkali metal is applied to an alkali metal oxide layer of the composition RSO, where R is an alkali metal. In the case of this glow discharge tube, not only the ignition and operating voltage, but also its internal resistance are extremely low, while the electrode coated with alkali metal sputtered only a little. Another advantage that is particularly noticeable when the tube z. B. is used in television sets for receiving images, consists in the fact that the number of candles emitted by the glowing glow discharge per watt of power consumption is large.
The afterglow of such a tube, i.e. H. the continuation of the luminous discharge after the strength of the current flowing through the tube has changed can be almost completely avoided by a suitable choice of the gas filling. Probably the afterglow of a z. B. neon-filled glow discharge tube according to the invention less than 0.00001 second.
The operating voltage and the ignition voltage of the glow discharge tube can be further reduced if a mixture of a gas, e.g. B. neon and another gas, e.g. B. argon is used, whose ionization voltage is lower than the ignition voltage of the first gas.
The ignition voltage of the glow discharge can also advantageously be reduced by illuminating the electrode coated with alkali metal.
In the drawing, an embodiment of a glow discharge tube according to the invention is shown, for example.
The discharge tube shown, which can be used as a signal lamp, has a wall 1 made of glass to which a small foot 2 is fused, on which two electrodes are arranged. One of these electrodes consists of a metal ring 3 which is carried by a support wire 4. The other, carried by the support wire 6 electrode 5 consists of a z. B. made of copper plate, which is covered on the electrode 3 facing side with a cesium oxide layer of the composition Cs20, on which a cesium layer is applied. It can be the other side of the plate as well as the support wires 4 and 6, if necessary, with an insulating material, for. B. with aluminum oxide covered.

In the following some possibilities are described how the surface of the cathode 5 can be produced.
For this purpose, after placing the electrodes in the tube and after the latter has been vented, a little cesium can be poured into the tube. Pipes are introduced, which is deposited on the copper plate 5. The cesium can e.g. B. introduced into the tube by evaporation from a container connected to the glow discharge tube. A suitable way of introducing cesium into the tube is e.g. Described in patent no. 128310. After the cesium has been introduced into the tube, excess oxygen is introduced into the tube: as a result, the cesium oxidizes, forming Css0. After the excess oxygen is removed from the tube, a new amount of cesium is introduced into the tube, which reduces the CS204 to Cs20.
This reduction can be facilitated by heating to approximately 200 ° C. The Cs20 formed can be recognized by its golden brown color. If the cesium is present in excess, it will settle on the Cs20 formed.
If the cesium is not present in excess, a new amount of cesium is introduced into the tube, which is then deposited on the layer of cesium oxide that has formed. The free cesium is partially adsorbed by the cesium oxide.
Furthermore, it is also possible to introduce a certain amount of oxygen into the tube after the first introduction of the cesium, so that the cesium is oxidized to Cs20. A new amount of cesium is then introduced into the tube, which is deposited on the layer of cesium oxide that has formed.
Further, a layer of water can be adsorbed on the copper plate 5 by introducing a small amount of water vapor into the tube. If excess cesium is supplied after removal of the excess water vapor from the tube, this cesium reacts with the water, forming Cs20 and liberating hydrogen, which can be removed from the tube, while the excess cesium is deposited on the layer of cesium oxide that has formed.
Although cesium is used in this process, it goes without saying that the process according to the invention can also be carried out with the other alkali metals.
After the cathode is formed, the tube is provided with a suitable gas or vapor filling. Good results are. z. B. has been achieved with a gas filling consisting of neon and 0.2% argon at a pressure of 8 mm. The ignition voltage of this tube, in which the electrode gap was 8 mm, was extremely low. This voltage was measured to be 56 volts when the tube was operated in the dark. When the cathode of the glow lamp was irradiated with a bundle of light, the illumination of the cathode having an intensity of 0.015 lumens per square centimeter, the ignition voltage was 54 volts. The operating voltage of the glow discharge tube was found to be 37 volts.
When the glow lamp is irradiated with a special light source, the same light source can expediently be used for irradiating the different glow lamps. It is also possible to combine the light source and the glow lamp structurally into a whole.
