So far, the reason for obtaining the advantageous results in comparison with the worthless product obtained by using water glass solutions has not been precisely recognized, but it appears that when the solution is used, the hydration of the cement is interrupted and ultimately hardly any more is obtained as a mass of cement grains which are loosely held together by the silicate. If, however, soluble silicate powder is used, the water has time to initiate the hydration of the cement before the silicate begins to dissolve; the subsequently dissolved silicate combines with the released calcium hydroxide to form calcium silicate.
The silicate powder produced according to the above-mentioned patent specification can contain 10-30% water, although it is a completely dry powder in terms of appearance and structure. You can therefore change the setting time within many limits, since, as already noted, this time changes with the amount of water contained in the powder.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Mixture for the production of concrete or mortar, characterized in that it consists of Portland cement or hydraulic lime, which are mixed in the dry state with a powder of colloidal, easily water-soluble alkali silicate, which was expediently prepared according to the method of Patent No. 82544 .
