<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Electric discharge vessel, especially rectifier.
The invention relates to an electrical discharge vessel. but in particular a rectifier with one or more anodes and a hot cathode, which consists of a material other than pure tungsten and emits electrons in and of itself or with added additives.

that with the rectifiers currently on the market and developed on the basis of older proposals, voltages of approximately 250 volts to 2500 volts could not be controlled, while one rectifier according to the invention succeeds. It has already been suggested. To build rectifiers with a pure tungsten cathode and a filling of inert gases, whereby the pressure of the filled gas is higher than 1 mm of mercury

It has also already been proposed to produce rectifiers with thoriated molybdenum calm and an argon filling. Nothing is given there about the pressures to be used in the gas filled in, and one has to begin with. following the results with rectifiers with a pure tungsten cathode, pressures of 30 mm and higher were applied to the gas. But there was only tension here

opportunities.
On the basis of extensive experiments, the invention came to the surprising result that very excellent results can be achieved if the purity of the gas filling is maintained.
Accordingly, the invention consists in that the cathode consists of a solid solution or an alloy of one or more basic materials (e.g. tungsten, molybdenum). which form the basis of electron emission, and one or more metallic additives (e.g. thorium). which lower the work function during electron emission, and a filling of inert gases. in particular 'noble gases or metal vapors, as well as means are provided which maintain the purity of the gas filling.
EMI1.5
A pressure of the gas or metal vapor filling between 3 and 25 mm of mercury has proven particularly advantageous.
If you use a hot cathode made of a substance in such a case. which is not tungsten and therefore has a lower melting point, but also atomizes at a considerably lower temperature than tungsten, the following advantages are achieved:
The gas filling will, in accordance with the low pressure, also require a lower absolute amount of gas, and therefore the most valuable gas, such as argon, is needed. Neon, helium, saved. If nitrogen or metal vapors are used in place of such a noble gas, these advantages of cost savings are less significant. The smaller gas content, however, has a lower thermal conductivity and as a result the heat dissipation from the hot cathode to the rectifier vessel is preferably made of glass.
Quartz or some other vitreous melt. As a result, the heat-emitting surface of this vessel can also be made smaller without reaching the latter's unacceptably high temperatures. This initially leads to smaller bulbs made of glass or the like, and this also makes the rectifier cheaper, easier to manufacture and easier to accommodate.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
By reducing the heat output through conduction, the heating current is also increased. which is required to maintain the emission temperature of the hot cathode is correspondingly lower, since it is now a smaller one. has to consider heat loss caused by dissipation.
It works like this. reduce the heating current. so it turns out. that smaller-diameter heating current entries are required for the hot cathode for the same performance. the other way around
EMI2.1
The surprising result was also found. that despite the use of such a lower pressure, the annealing temperature is further reduced with the same output and, as a result, extraordinarily long lifetimes can be achieved. One reason for this may be that. that because of reduction
EMI2.2
This advantage is particularly evident with hot cathodes. which have a basic material that is more atomizable at the same temperature as pure tungsten. such as molybdenum. but also in the case of such cathodes which have an additive which promotes electron emission, preferably in the outer skin, which can, as it were, be blown off by the impacting gas ions and, for example, in thorium. Uranium and so on.
A further advantage of the invention is that, with a given voltage, the electrodes can be arranged closer to one another than with the higher gas pressure previously used alone, that is to say, conversely, with a given distance of the electrodes, higher voltages can be controlled.
EMI2.3
Cleaning methods for the gas are available.
It is now obvious. that by reducing the pressure and thus the absolute amount of the filled gas, the absolute amount of impurities that get into the vessel with the gas is reduced. Furthermore, as explained earlier, the absolute contents of the vessel even with a given voltage or current strength or
Power can be reduced, the
EMI2.4
According to the current state of scientific research, one of the reasons for this. that the service life of the hot cathode was reduced because these impurities are deposited on the hot cathode during operation and stuck to it. Covered otherwise active surface parts of the cathode, as it were, and thus excluded from further celctron emission.
These impurities were also based on the same finding that the inventors look to
EMI2.5
homopolar electrodes, i.e. the anodes, had to be observed. in order to exclude direct breakdowns between these electrodes while bypassing the cathode. If the invention now has the consequence that the introduced impurities are absolutely reduced, the direct breakdown possibility is reduced through it, and this probably results in an explanation for the fact that in a rectifier according to the invention the electrode spacing is reduced and thereby the dimensions as well of the vessel, in particular its gas content,
can still be reduced.
Another strange phenomenon was observed in a rectifier according to the invention: while the base of the arc danced on the cathode in rectifiers that are filled with inert gases of 30 ww mercury column pressure and higher, i.e. did not emanate from any specific point on the cathode, also wandered and preferentially stuck to the entry near the welding or clamping point of the cathode wire and the latter immediately damaged or destroyed, dancing the arc and wandering with a rectifier with lower gas pressures according to the invention is not ascertain.
Rather, it remains evenly distributed and still on the active, active surface of the cathode itself, even if the connection of a pole of the alternating current source is not at all symmetrical to the feed ends of the designs of the hot cathode.
Any material can be used as an arrangement material. which does not atomize if the entry area of the stream is adequately dimensioned and the unavoidable heating. In particular, apart from tantalum and tungsten, molybdenum can also be used as anode material. Nickel. Graphite, even iron can be used.
Surprisingly favorable results were achieved, in particular, with cathodes of the "dark glow" type, which consisted of molybdenum to which thorium was added in percentages of approximately 0-75-10%, based on the solid solution or alloy obtained and to obtain sufficient results with a tungsten thorium cathode, even if the cathode contains significant amounts of molybdenum in addition to tungsten and about 0-25-3% thorium. up to about 20%
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
and more. and therefore only a tungsten alloy wire as a basic material and no longer pure tungsten as a basic material.
These considerations and observations by the inventors do not only apply to the hot cathode types listed. but also to all others. in which tungsten. Molybdenum or other metals and metalloids as the base material and thorium or other metals and metalloids that are different from the base material. can be used as an additive. but also then. when a mixture of the selected basic substances takes place and an additive or a mixture of such additives is incorporated into these in turn. Besides tungsten and molybdenum as basic materials, tantalum can also be used.

one end each. However, if it is designed with two or more anodes, a central part to accommodate the cathode and attached. appropriately bent arms according to the number of Auoden used. the latter being installed near the end of the arm in question.
It has now been shown when using hot cathodes, especially of the dark glow type "with sensitive active or to be activated surface hand (such as tungsten-thorium, but also with lower-melting base materials. Such as molybdenum with incorporated thorium or the like) with cathode temperatures that rule out any destruction of the sensitive surface layer or sputtering of the cathode material or a component thereof, if the cathode is covered with a preferably very thin layer of magnesium.
