Agent to prevent scale build-up in steam boilers.
The invention relates to an agent for preventing scale build-up in steam boilers. Numerous means are already known which are intended to prevent scale build-up in steam boilers. For this purpose, special coatings have been proposed for the boiler walls, attempts have been made to induce chemical reactions or substances with a coagulating effect have been proposed. Attempts have also been made to effect the electric current by installing special anodes in the boiler and using the boiler wall itself as a cathode. All of these methods are unsatisfactory, as they either do not produce the desired effect or are so cumbersome that they cause unbearable costs and also make it much more difficult to operate the boiler.
Even the pretreatment of the feed water to separate the largest proportion of the so-called hardness builders cannot reliably prevent the formation of scale.
It has now been found that it is possible to keep the surface of the boiler walls completely bright and free of deposits even when using very hard water for feeding the boiler, if a mixture of activated carbon and a metal powder with a lower electrochemical potential than iron is added to the boiler contents becomes. Copper powder has proven particularly useful for the present purpose. If the correct amount of the metal carbon powder mixture is used, which is not very significant in itself, the salts dissolved in the feed water settle as crystalline powders at the bottom of the boiler and can be removed in the usual way through the sludge drain valve.
The formation of a solid crust, which is known to be very difficult to remove and the removal of which gradually attacks the boiler walls, is completely excluded when using the new agent.
The effect of the new remedy can perhaps be explained in this way. that the activated carbon and the metal powder in interaction with the boiler wall cause the formation of a fine gas membrane on the boiler wall and thereby prevent the solid build-up of salts.
Embodiment. 1 m3 of boiler feed water of average hardness is mixed with 120 parts of a mixture consisting of 60 parts of activated carbon powder and 40 parts of copper powder.
