Method for operating four-stroke internal combustion engines.
The invention relates to a method for operating four-stroke internal combustion engines in which air introduced into the cylinder under high pressure expands therein with a decrease in temperature.
The invention aims in particular to design a type of machine which combines the advantage of increased performance in a charge with compressed air with an improvement in efficiency, while at the same time making it possible to make do with the simplest constructive means.
The improvement in efficiency is achieved in that the air is delivered to the working side of the piston under such a pressure that it is expanded to the pressure corresponding to the prevailing outside temperature due to the expansion in the cylinder; This eliminates the need for special cooling of the machine and there is also no need to cool the air reservoir in which the compressed air is stored. In contrast to other known methods, the compression is not carried out by a special device, but on the back of the piston, which further simplifies, u. between it takes place up to such a pressure that the stated extent of relaxation to the pressure corresponding to the prevailing outside temperature is maintained.
An example of a device for performing this method is shown schematically in the drawing.
The piston 2 is guided in the cylinder 1 and drives a push rod 4 and a crank 5 by means of the piston rod 3 and a cross head 7 sliding in the guide 6. During the backward stroke of the piston in the direction of the arrow 16, air is sucked in through the valve 8, during the forward stroke in the opposite direction of the arrow 17 it is compressed and pushed through the valve 9 and the line 10 into the container 11. During the forward stroke of the piston (direction of arrow 17), the highly compressed air emerges from this container 11 through the line 12 and the valve 13 into the upper working space of the cylinder 1.
When entering the cylinder, the air expands to the operating pressure corresponding to the outside temperature and thereby withdraws the heat stored in them from the cylinder walls and the parts connected to them. When the air expands, part of the amount of heat lost during the work process is made usable again to preheat the combustion air or the mixture. The various valves to which the exhaust valve 14 also occurs can be controlled in any way. With 15 the spark plug or some other ignition device or injection nozzle is referred to.
Due to the expansion of the air in the cylinder, its temperature or that of the mixture at the beginning of the compression stroke can be reduced significantly below the current temperature in the machines. This increases the degree of compression considerably and the whole work cycle takes place between two pressures that are lower than the current normal.
