    Case hardening powder.

For cementing the non-hardenable iron, one used to have nitrogen-containing coals, such as. B. those from leather waste, horn and claws, etc., used to bring about a deeper and faster penetration of the carbon into the iron when glowing in the insert boxes. Coal made from such materials is relatively expensive; but if the insert boxes themselves are filled with the nitrogenous waste, much of the effect of the nitrogenous coal is lost due to the shrinkage that occurs during the carbonization. The use of a mixture of charcoal and anthracite with carbonates, on the one hand, and the addition of a nitrate to case hardening powders, on the other hand, is already known.

According to the invention, a certain mixture, namely of 50 parts by weight of beech charcoal, 20 parts by weight of anthracite, 25 parts by weight of soda and 5 parts by weight of sodium nitrate, is advantageously used as a case-hardening powder. The iron to be carbonized is then placed in annealing boxes that are sealed airtight. Under the action of heat, the saltpetre reacts with the coal to form carbonic acid or carbon dioxide and nitrogen. By burning part of the coal with the saltpetre, the iron is quickly brought to the temperature required for carbonization, so that the glow time is significantly shortened. The resulting gaseous products also cause faster and deeper carbonation due to the pressure increase in the annealing box.

The present case hardening powder also has the advantage that it can be reused several times after adding small amounts of saltpetre.
