Fig. 2 zeigt perspektivisch die Form der Membran.

gefalteten Kante a.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Acoustic device.
The invention relates to a membrane arrangement on acoustic devices, such as electric loudspeakers, and aims at a very pure transmission or reproduction of the sound vibrations.
According to the invention, the membrane consists of a surface produced by simply folding a flat plate, the free individual parts of which are bent outwards parallel to the folded edge. The electrically transmitted sound moves the folding edge in such a way that the vibrations evenly enter the membrane halves longitudinally, whereby the appropriate selection of the curvature of the membrane surfaces ensures that the vibrations are transformed into transverse membrane vibrations.
The drawing schematically illustrates several embodiments of the new membrane and their arrangement. Fig. 1 shows a front view of a simple embodiment in which a piece of membrane material m, z. B. aluminum sheet is folded once and laterally bent again. The result is a fan-shaped bent structure with the stiff edge K caused by the folding. An iron armature A attached to the edge and supported on a tongue Z serves to excite the membrane. A magnet system M, through whose winding an electric current that varies according to the sound vibrations to be reproduced, flows, influences the armature A and thus communicates the required vibrations to the membrane.
Fig. 2 shows in perspective the shape of the membrane. The possibility is therefore illustrated by several arrows to stimulate the membrane m to vibrate at several points Fi to P, the edge K. The exciting oscillation systems can be matched mechanically and electrically in order to achieve the purest possible acoustic transmission.
FIG. 3 shows an embodiment of the membrane with a plurality of partial areas Mi-, which are obtained in that two or more folded metal sheets are bent open as in FIG. 1 and pushed into one another in such a way that the edges K coincide.
The effect of the membrane is impaired under certain circumstances if the quantities of air in front of and behind the membrane are connected, so that the pressure differences resulting from the membrane vibrations are compensated.
This disadvantage is avoided in the further exemplary embodiments.
Fig. 4 initially shows schematically the compensation of the air pressure differences in the membrane m open on all sides, the second half of which has been omitted for the sake of simplicity. The membrane has its fixed edge at k and its movable edge at a. If the diaphragm now moves into the position shown in dashed lines, with the movable edge moving towards a1, the air balance takes place in the direction of the arrows. The compensation is naturally greater on the moving edge than on the fixed one.

folded edge a. The entire cavity of the housing is expediently dampened with felt in a manner known per se in order to avoid natural vibrations.
Instead of a housing closed by the membrane, as shown in FIG. 6, for example, a non-closed boundary surface b can also be connected to the free longitudinal edges of the membrane.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
which prevent the equalization of the pressure differences practically enough. These boundary surfaces are expediently dimensioned in such a way that they just prevent compensation down to the lowest audible frequencies. The compensation is no longer disruptive for frequencies below this limit.
Another very advantageous and practical embodiment of the membrane is shown in FIG.
A larger number, for example six or eight curved individual membranes m, are joined together with their edges, so that overall they form a closed cylinder jacket in which the curvatures are convex. The movable edges a located in the interior of this lateral surface are each excited by an associated electromagnet or the like, so that the entire structure represents an acoustic radiator whose volume is the same in all directions in the plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.
In particular in the arrangements shown in FIGS. 1, 5 and 6, the moving edges of the membranes are expediently provided with metallic reinforcing ribs, as shown in FIG. 8, for example. These stiffening ribs are preferably made of a U-shaped bent around the edge and riveted sheet metal, for. B. made of aluminum.
The presence of such stiffening ribs grants, besides the advantage of the stability of the membrane, another essential advantage, which consists in the fact that the loudspeaker can be used not only for electromagnetic but also for electrodynamic drive, the metallic rib at the same time as a current-carrying conductor in the magnetic field is used. Another advantage of this arrangement is that the forces moving the membrane do not act in one point, but rather uniformly along the entire movable edge. Any undesired bending of this edge is excluded and the loudspeaker guarantees excellent sound reproduction without clinking or rattling with the greatest sound output.
In this arrangement, the metallic edge is located in the narrowest possible gap between the poles of the magnets generating the magnetic field, which are expediently as long as the conductor itself. To avoid contact between the conductor and the magnet, pads made of felt, velvet or similar material can be attached between these two parts of the apparatus, which at the same time give the membrane additional damping, thereby increasing its sound purity. Embodiments of this arrangement are shown in FIGS. Here l denotes the conductor, s the cushion, N and S the magnetic poles.
Another way of guiding the conductor is shown, for example, in FIG. 11. The conductor I is held laterally by flexible bands, threads, wires, or the like. The natural oscillation of the entire membrane system is expediently placed below the lowest hearing frequency,
In the embodiments of the invention, the free, unmoved edges of the membranes are attached either to the housing / (FIG. 5) or to border pieces b (FIG. 6).
In order to avoid that this type of mounting results in disruptive natural frequencies of the membrane system, the fastening takes place with the interposition of pads made of felt, velvet or the like, as shown for example in FIG. 12 in a front view. p means the cushion, t the housing or edging piece. The edge of the pad p lying against the membrane is expediently provided with serrations, as shown in FIG. 13, so that the membrane is not clamped along a certain clamping line which would support the tendency to natural oscillations.
In order to protect the rather sensitive membrane of the loudspeaker from damage, protection in the form of a wire or gauze covering is expediently provided in front of the membrane in all arrangements.
As for loudspeakers, the new arrangements are also suitable for microphones in which the sound strikes the folded membrane and the movements of the edge influence an electrical circuit electrodynamically, electromagnetically or by changing a resistance.
