Abstract
A precious metal leaching method includes providing a sludge feed, comprising (i) in the solid phase, a sulfide-containing refractory material, wherein the material comprises at least about 0.05 oz/ton of a metal precious, at least about 0.75% by weight of sulfides, optionally at least about 0.1% by weight of feldspar (i.e., muscovite), and at least 0.3% by weight of carbonaceous material "preg" -robbing; and oxidizing the sulfide-containing material at greater than about 240°C and at superatmospheric pressure to oxidize at least most of the carbonaceous material and, optionally, converting at least most of the sulfide sulfur to sulfate sulfur and forming an oxidized material that contains precious metals, where at least one of the following actions is performed during oxidation: maintaining a pH of at least about pH 1.5; maintaining at least about 98.5% of the feldspar (i.e. muscovite) in the solid phase; maintaining a concentration of dissolved cupric ions of at least about 0.25 g/L; and maintain the feed in suspension under operating conditions with subcritical or supercritical water.
