Abstract
Claim 1: A recombinant gene comprising a nucleic acid having a preferential promoter activity in roots, stress inducible or a promoter with preference by roots, induced by stress selected from the group consisting of: a) a nucleic acid comprising a nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID No. 7 or a functional fragment thereof comprising the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID No. 7 from nucleotide position 351 to nucleotide position 755; b) a nucleic acid comprising a nucleotide sequence having a sequence similarity of at least about 95% with SEQ ID No. 7, or a functional fragment thereof; and c) the nucleic acid of a functional promoter capable of hybridizing under strict conditions with the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID No. 7, or a functional fragment thereof wherein said functional fragment comprises at least approximately 400 consecutive nucleotides upstream of the transcription start of the SEQ ID No. 7, operatively linked to a heterologous nucleic acid sequence encoding an expression product of interest, and optionally a polyadenylation and transcription termination sequence, preferably a polyadenylation and functional transcription termination region in plants. Claim 3: A host cell comprising the recombinant gene according to claim 1 or 2. Claim 9: The method of altering tolerance to abiotic or biotic stress, root architecture, nutrient use efficiency, or yield of a plant, said method comprising introducing the recombinant gene according to claim 1 or 2 into the genome of a plant.
