The a-diimine compound acts as a colorimetric iron sensor. The a-diimine compound coordinates with the ferrous ions in solution to give a colored diimine-iron complex. The absorbance of the resulting diimine-iron solution that is a function of the iron analyte concentration is measured. The iron concentration of a solution can be determined by treating the solution with the composition of the present, measuring its absorbance and comparing said absorbance with the absorbance of test standards of known concentration.
