Abstract

The first portion (11) comprises a bottomhole unit adapted to be connected to a central tube of a crown drill, and a second portion (12) comprises a control unit. The bottomhole unit (11) is adapted to cooperate with a central tube for data recording in relation to the orientation of the central tube, and the control unit (12) is adapted to cooperate with the bottomhole unit to receive and process the orientation data of the bottomhole unit and provide an indication of the orientation of a core sample within the central tube at a time prior to the separation of the core sample from the underground environment from which it was obtained . The bottomhole unit (11) is configured to cooperate with the control unit (12) in order to establish an operational connection between them. More specifically, the bottomhole unit (11) and the control unit (12) are configured to provide a coupling (23) through which they are connected with the ability to decouple each other to allow selective rotation between them. The coupling (23) comprises a combination of magnetic coupling and mechanical coupling.
