Abstract

Claim 1: An impact pad (20) characterized in that it is made of a refractory material capable of supporting contact with molten metal, comprising a base (12) that serves in use as an impact surface for molten metal, and a side wall (14) that generally extends in an upward direction therefrom, said side wall (14) ends on an upper surface (16) that is above the base (12) in use so that the base (12) and the side wall (14) define a receptacle for receiving molten metal, while the side wall (14) contains at least one channel (22), said at least one channel (22) has the first and second (24, 26), the first end (24) is relatively closer to the base (12) at its intersection with the side wall (14) than the second end (26), said at least one channel (22) it is open at the second end (26) or taper so that said at least one channel (22) possess a zero depth at its second end (26). Claim 10: A trough to accommodate a certain volume of molten metal, characterized in that it has a floor and side walls that surround an impact region and a drain, an impact pad (20) being provided according to any of the preceding claims on the floor of the trough in the region of impact.
