Abstract

Method for protecting a plant or part of said plant against infestation by insects or nematodes, in which one or more insects or nematodes have digestive cysteine protease, which comprises presenting to a place where said insect (s) or nematode ( s) must (n) be controlled by an inhibitory nature, or cysteine protease inhibitor, selected from the group of proteins that contain at least one repeated thyroglobulin type I domain. Said method further comprises the steps of: (a) culturing cells or tissues taken from the plant; (b) introducing into the cells or tissues at least one copy of a gene encoding the protein that contains at least one repeated type I thyroglobulin domain; and (c) regenerate resistant whole plants from cell or tissue culture. Transgenic plant and its sexual progeny resistant to the attack of one or more insects or nematodes that have digestive cysteine protease obtained by said method. Biologically functional expression medium, which contains an effective promoter for expressing in the cells of the plant the protein that contains at least one repeated thyroglobulin domain of tipn I and host cell transformed by said biologically functional expression medium. Agricultural composition containing a carrier and an active amount of a cysteine protease inhibitor that controls or attacks an insect or nematode. Peptide inhibitor of the thyroglobulin domain of type I repeated, with activity against aspartic proteases.
