Abstract

A device for detecting the location of a magnet coupled to a permanent medical device, inserted in a patient, employs three or more sets of magnetic sensors, each of which has sensor elements arranged in a known manner. Each sensor element detects the strength of the magnetic field generated by the magnet and provides data indicative of the direction of the magnet in a three-dimensional space. The device employs fundamental positions for electricity and magnetism that relate the strength of the measured magnetic field and the gradient of the magnetic field with the location and strength of a magnetic dipole. The device uses an iterative process to determine the actual location and orientation of the magnet. An initial estimate of the location and orientation of the magnet results in the generation of expected magnetic field values. The expected magnetic field values are compared with the actual mean values provided by the magnetic sensors. Based on the difference between the expected values and the average values, the device calculates a new location of the magnet and calculates new values of the expected magnetic field strength. This iteration process continues until the expected values coincide with the measured values, within a desired degree of tolerance. At this point, the estimated location coincides with the actual location within a predetermined degree of tolerance. A two-dimensional viewfinder provides an indication of the location delimán with respect to the detector cover. A portion of the depth indicator display may be used to provide an absolute or relative indication of the depth at which the magnet is located in the patient's body.
