Abstract

An insect repellant, in particular for mosquitoes comprising citronella and chloroxylenol. A particular effective preparation consists of 50 percent by volume of citronella oil, 5 percent by volume oil of citronella and 48 percent by volume of emulsifier. Odour enhancing compounds can be added. An effective method of repelling mosquitoes consists in simply open to the atmosphere in a room a container containing the above mixture.

Description

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to an insect repellant and, more particularly, but not exclusively, a mosquito repellant.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Generally used as insect repellants are dibutylphthlate, dimethylphelate and diethyltoluamide.
However, preparations containing these compounds, particularly when employed as mosquito repellants, have to be applied to the skin, clothing or bedding of a person, in order to be effective. This is often distasteful to such person.
Other means of repelling mosquitos may be employed such as electrically heated pads which vaporise active ingredients contained in an absorbent mat, sonic devices or compounds which are ignited and burnt. Use of these methods is not always convenient or practical.
Citronella has been used as an insect repellant, or a constituent of insect repellant preparations, but it has been regarded as less effective than the abovementioned compounds, and is not generally employed for such repellant purposes.
Chloroxylenol has, as far as applicant is aware, never been employed for insect repellant purposes and its usage is generally confined to that of an antiseptic.

It is the object of this invention to provide an insect repellant preparation which may be more easily rendered effective than some of the methods mentioned above and which does not need to be applied to the body, bedding or clothing of a person using same.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It has now surprisingly been found that a mixture of citronella and chloroxylenol provides extremely good insect repellant, in particular mosquito repellant, properties.
Accordingly the invention provides an insect repellant preparation comprising, in admixture, citronella and chloroxylenol, together with any required additives or the like.
Further features of the invention provide for the preparation to comprise from 3% to 5% by volume of citronella oil, from 45% to 55% by volume chloroxylenol and emulsifiers, odour enhancing compounds or other ciluants or additives.
A particular preparation which has been found to be effective is one containing 50% by volume chloroxylenol, 5% by volume oil of citronella and 45% by volume emulsifiers.
A mixture of this type has been found effective in repelling mosquitos, in particular, when a container thereof is simply open to the atmosphere in a room.
Clearly the proportions of the ingredients can be varied widely as can the emulsifier content. Also odour enhancing compounds can be added as required.
