The invention concerns an automatic valve for controlling fluid flow through a pipeline. The valve has a valve body in which there is a fluid passage which can be is connected in the pipeline. A power generator is arranged to generate electrical power when fluid flows through the fluid passage. A power storage means is provided to sore elctrical power generated by the power generator. There is valve closure that can move relative to the fluid passage between an open position in which it allows flow to take place through the fluid passage and a closed position in which it prevents such flow. A valve drive means, which is powered by a flow of luid from the fluid passage, is provided to move the valve closure between its respective open and closed positions. A valve drive control means responsive to a potential difference supplied by the power storage means is then provided to control the operation of the valve drive means selectively such that the valve closure is move either from its open to its closed position or vice versa. The valve drive control means can be controlled remotely via radio transmissions or on a prepayment basis.
