Definitions
- the invention relates to an observation device, comprising a camera and a visual display unit connected to the camera, for displaying the picture taken by the camera at a distance from the camera.
- Such observation devices are generally known and are used for the surveillance of buildings, roads or grounds.
- the camera is in a fixed position, for example fixed on a wall or mounted on a pole.
- the visual display unit also called a monitor, is then situated in a surveillance room at a distance from where the camera is set up.
- the pictures that 1 have been taken are then observed by competent persons in the surveillance room. When a dangerous situation is observed, these competent persons can then either notify third parties, who will take action, or they can take action themselves.
- a disadvantage of the known observation devices is that they require a complete infrastructure, namely cameras and monitors set up in a fixed position and surveillance by security personnel.
- the object of the invention is to achieve an observation device in the case of which such an infrastructure is not necessary, and in the case of which in dangerous situations the user can use the device on the spot and can also protect himself and take efficient action.
- an observation device is characterized in that the camera and the visual display unit are mobile and can be carried by the same user. Since both the camera and the visual display unit are mobile and portable, the user can take them with him in the grounds and use them there, without an infrastructure being necessary there. Since, furthermore, camera and visual display unit are set up at a distance from each other, the user is not obliged to stay in the immediate vicinity of the camera, and can set himself up in a safe position to look at the display there.
- a first preferred embodiment of an observation device is characterized in that the camera is mounted on a firearm, this being in such a way that a picture of the room towards which the barrel of the firearm is aimed can be taken by the camera. This means that the user can introduce his firearm with camera into a room without entering the room himself. The presence of the camera on the firearm allows him to see into the room without being present there with his whole body in the room. The user can therefore protect himself without acting less efficiently in the process.
- a second preferred embodiment of an observation device according to the invention is characterized in that the visual display unit is accommodated in a pair of spectacles. . The use of a pair of spectacles for the visual display unit gives the user the possibility of not only looking in a concentrated way, but also keeping one hand free.
- the observation device is provided with a light source, for generating invisible light, in particular infrared light, which light source is disposed near the camera, in order to illuminate the picture area to be photographed by the camera.
- a light source for generating invisible light, in particular infrared light, which light source is disposed near the camera, in order to illuminate the picture area to be photographed by the camera.
- the observation device can also be used in poor light or at night.
- Figure 2 shows an environment in which the observation device according to the invention can be used.
- the observation device according to the invention shown in Figure 1 comprises a visual display unit 1 , which is connected by way of a cable 7 to a picture-processing unit 4.
- a camera 2 is also connected by way of a cable 5 to the picture-processing unit 4.
- the camera is mounted on a firearm 3, in such a way that the lens of the camera is disposed parallel to the barrel of the firearm. In this way, an image can be formed of the room towards which the barrel of the firearm is aimed.
- the pictures taken by the camera are transmitted by way of ' the cable to the picture-processing unit 4.
- the latter processes them and makes it possible to display them on the visual display unit 1
- the camera is, for example, in the form of a CCD or a CPL camera. These cameras have the advantage of being compact and light.
- the invention is not, however, limited to the embodiment illustrated in Figure 1.
- the visual display unit in a form other than a pair of spectacles, for example on a tripod, in particular a shoulder tripod.
- the camera does not necessarily have to be mounted on a firearm either, but can simply be fitted on a handgrip. If the device is not intended for dangerous assignments, it is even possible to accommodate the camera in the pair of spectacles.
- the picture-processing unit also has the function of acting as a supply source for the camera and the display unit. Instead of using cables 5 and/or 7, it is also possible to achieve wireless transmission.
- a light source 6 is preferably fitted on the camera, in order to work in poor light conditions or at night.
- the light source 6 is in particular formed by an infrared light source. Since the light source 6 is disposed parallel to the camera, the picture area is illuminated, so that pictures can be taken even when there is little or no daylight.
- Figure 2 shows an environment in which the observation device according to the invention can be used.
- the user 8 using the observation device is wearing the pair of spectacles in which the display unit 1 is accommodated.
- the user can take up position behind a wall 9 and is therefore protected.
- the camera 2 By means of the camera 2, he can look into the room 11 , without leaving his position behind the wall 9. This means that he is protected and can still inspect the room 11.
- a sight mark 10 is preferably provided in the camera, so that the user can also aim his firearm in the event of this being necessary.
- A preferred embodiment of the picture-processing unit and the visual display unit is provided, for giving a three-dimensional display of the picture.
- the picture-processing unit can also be designed to enlarge or to reduce the picture. It is further possible to provide the picture-processing unit with a memory for storing the pictures that have been taken, and possibly with transmission means for transmitting the picture. It is also possible to provide a heat-sensitive detection system in the picture display.
