Abstract
A remotely controlled stopping system for a vehicle comprises a handheld transmitter to transmit a signal to the vehicle and an actuator unit (7) mounted on the vehicle to actuate a control linkage (10) to cause the vehicle to stop. The invention is particularly applicable to bicycles for small children, providing parents or guardians with a means for stopping the bicycle should this be necessary.
Description
Remotely Controlled Stopping System for a Vehicle The present invention
relates to a remotely controlled stopping system for a vehicle, and particularly, but not exclusively, to a remotely controlled stopping system for a bicycle.
There are a number of vehicles which can only be used by a single person. This presents problems when a person is using to learn such a vehicle for the first time, especially if that vehicle is to be operated by a young child.
A particular problem arises in respect of a young child riding a bicycle, which bicycle may possibly be fitted with stabilisers. Initially, a parent or guardian may walk or run along with the child, but at some point may not be able to keep up with the child who may not realise the potential dangers or who may panic and not be able to control the bicycles. More recently, a number of motorised vehicles have become available for children, for example motorised carts and miniature quad bikes, where again a child may loose control of the vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided a remotely controlled stopping system for a vehicle comprising a handheld transmitter arranged to be held remotely from the vehicle and transmit a signal to the vehicle and an actuator unit arranged to be mounted on the vehicle and to actuate a control linkage on the vehicle to cause the vehicle to stop.
By employing the present invention, it is possible to remotely stop a vehicle and therefore permit the person, such a parent, to remotely override the controls of the vehicle to bring it to a stop when it is deemed appropriate.
Where the vehicle is motorised, the actuator unit may be arranged to connect to a throttle linkage of a vehicle and thus close the throttle of the vehicle. Alternatively, the actuator unit may be arranged to disengage a clutch of a vehicle andlor to apply the brakes of the vehicle.
The system may be arranged to be fitted to a bicycles where the actuator unit comprises a connection for coupling to a brake of a bicycle. The actuator may be connected in parallel to a normal brake activating mechanism such that an operator of the vehicle can operate the braking system in a conventional manner with the actuator unit being arranged to override the conventional braking system to apply the brakes. In this way, a person may learn to control and use the vehicle normally, providing control via the remote unit only when this is considered appropriate by the person remote of the vehicle.
Preferably, the actuator unit is arranged to be retrofitted to an existing vehicle. This is particularly convenient in the case of bicycles where the actuator can be mounted to the frame of the bicycle and engage with a conventional brake linkage of the bicycle, normally that associated with the rear wheel of the bicycle.
Preferably, the actuator unit comprises a receiver and a battery pack for energising the actuator and the receiver. Advantageously, the actuator unit is arranged to stop the vehicle when the charge in the battery falls below a predetermined level, thus, ensuring a failsafe state.
The battery pack is preferably rechargeable and this may be by means of connecting to the mains via a trickle charger or, in the case of a bicycle, by a dynamo on the bicycle or, in the case of a motorised vehicle, be connection to the electrical system of the vehicle.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying figures, of which: Figure 1 illustrates a bicycle with a stopping system in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 illustrates the connection of the stopping system in accordance with the present invention to a standard braking system of the bicycle of Figure 1; Figure 3 illustrates the actuator unit of the stopping system in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 4 illustrates a transmitter for the stopping system in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to Figure 1, there is illustrated a bicycle, indicated generally as 1, which comprises a front brake 2 and a rear brake 3. The rear brake 3 is controlled by brake lever 5 mounted to the front handlebars 6 via Bowden cable 4. Retrofitted to the bicycle 1 is actuator unit 7 which is secured to the seat mast 8 by straps 9. An additional Bowden cable connects the unit 7 to the rear brake 3, as illustrated in more detail with reference to Figure 2.
Referring to Figure 2, the centre cable 11 of Bowden cable 4 attached to front brake lever 5 is shown connected via connector 12 to standard arm 13 of the rear brake. When the cable is pulled in the direction of arrow 14, the arm forces brakes blocks (not shown) into contact with the rim of the rear wheel 15 (Figure 1) in a conventional manner.
Sandwiched to either side of the arm 13, by the connector 12, is linkage 16 via which the inner cable 17 of the Bowden cable 10 is connected to the brake arm 13. The cable 17 is connected to the actuator unit 7, which is shown in more detail in Figure 3.
Referring to Figure 3, the actuator unit 7 comprises a housing 18, housing battery 19 and control unit 20, a motor 21 and the housing 18 additionally supports an antenna 22 connected to a receiver within the control unit 20.
The stopping system in accordance with the present invention additionally comprises a remote unit 23 comprising casing 24, an OFF button 25 and an ON button 26.
Internally of the casing, there is located a battery 27, a control unit 28 and an antenna 29.
In use, a person located remotely of the bicycle may push OFF button 25 or ON button 26 of the remote unit 23, with each button causing control unit 28 to transmit an appropriate signal via transmitter 29 to the aerial 22 of the receiver of the control unit 20 located in the actuator unit 7 (Figure 3). This signal will either cause the motor 21 to tension cable 11 or release cable 11 such that the brake is in an ON state or an OFF state accordingly. Therefore, when a person riding the bicycle is considered to no longer be in control, the brake can be applied which will stop the bicycle.
The invention has been described above in relation to a bicycle but could equally be applied to other vehicles including motorised vehicles such as quad bikes, whereby the actuator could be connected to a throttle control, a clutch or a stop switch associated with the vehicle.
