[0015] An informational display personalised content feed system 100 comprises an electronic device 101. The electronic device 101 comprises a processor 102 for processing digital data. In operable communication with the processor 102 by a system bus 103 is a memory device 104. The memory device 104 is configured for storing digital data including computer program code instructions. In use, the processor 102 fetches these computer program code instructions and associated data from the memory device 104 for interpretation and execution of the computational functionality described herein. [0016] The computer program code instructions may be logically divided into a plurality of computer program code instruction controllers 105. The data 106 may comprise one or more software applications 107, 108 installed and executed by the processor 102.
[0017] The electronic device comprises a digital display device 109 which displays digital information 1 10 thereon. The electronic device 101 further displays a content feed 1 11 comprising a plurality of content items 112.
[0018] The controllers 105 may comprise a display controller 112 which controls the display of digital information 1 10 and/or content feed 11 1 on the digital display 109 and the user interface controller 113 which may handle user input.
[0019] The electronic device 1 10 may take various forms. In one form, the electronic device 100 may take the form of a mobile communication device. In another form, the electronic device 100 may take the form of a digital television. In a yet further form, the electronic device 100 may take the form of a vehicle heads-up display system. [0020] The electronic device 101 may comprise a data interface 116 for being in operable communication with a content feed server 114 across a communication network 115, such as the Internet. The content feed server 1 14 similarly comprises a processor 102 and memory device 104 in operable communication via system bus 103. Similarly, the memory 104 may comprise data 106 and controllers 105.
[0021 ] The data 106 may comprise content items 112 which may be obtained from a plurality of content servers 117. The data 106 may further comprise user interest categorisations 118 stored in relation to respective user profiles 119.
[0022] The controllers 105 may comprise a content feed controller 120 which feeds the content items 112 to the electronic device 101 in accordance with the user interest categorisations 1 18 selected in respect of a user profile 1 14 associated with the electronic device 101. The controllers 105 may further comprise a personalisation controller 124 which updates the user interest categorisations 118 in accordance with user interaction with the display content items 112.
[0023] The content feed server 1 14 and/or the electronic device 101 may be further in operable communication with a programmatic content server 121 across a communication network 115. The programmatic content server 121 may store data
122 comprising programmatic content items 123. As will be described in further detail below, the electronic device 101 may additionally display programmatic content items
123 which are selected from the programmatic content server 121 in accordance with the user interest categorisations 118 of the user profile 119 associated with the electronic device 101 .
[0024] Figure 2 shows an embodiment of the electronic device 101 when taking the form of a mobile communication device. As is shown, the electronic device 101 comprises the digital display 109 displaying the digital information 110 thereon. Furthermore, the digital display 109 displays the content feed 111. In the embodiment shown, the content feed 111 may be displayed as an overlay, either in front of the digital information 110 (including with transparent background) or adjacent thereto in the manner shown in Figure 2. The content feed 111 may be controlled by the application 110 (which may execute in the background) whereas the digital information 110 may be displayed by other applications 108 executing on the electronic device 101 .
[0025] In embodiments, selection of a content item 112 may cause the display of content item selection content 125. As alluded to above, whereas Figure 2 shows the electronic device 101 taking the form of a mobile communication device, the electronic device 101 may take other forms including the aforedescribed digital television, vehicle heads up display and the like.
[0026] Figure 3 shows exemplary processing 126 by the system 100. The processing 126 may comprise the creation of a user profile 119 at step 127. In embodiments, the user may download and install the application 107 on the electronic device 109 and then, during the initial setup, allow the application 107 to communicate with the content feed server 114 for the creation of a user profile 119.
[0027] The processing 100 may comprise configuration of initial user interest categorisations 128. These categorisations may be default categorisations or personalised in accordance with user input, such as from a list of available categorisations. For example, user may specify that the user is interested in sports, and, in particular, men’s surfing.
[0028] At step 129, the system 100 receives a feed request. For example, when using the electronic device 101 , the application 107 executing thereon may request the content feed 11 1 from the content feed server 114.
[0029] At step 130, the content feed controller 120 selects content items 121 in accordance with the user interest categorisations 1 18. As alluded to above, the content feed server 114 may be in operable communication with a plurality of content servers 117, such as news content servers. As such, the content feed controller 121 may retrieve content items from the content servers 1 17 applicable to the user interest categorisations 1 18. For example, the content feed controller 120 may request content items 112 from the content server 117 relating to sport and preferably in relation to men’s surfing.
[0030] At step 131 , the content feed server 114 feeds the content items to the electronic device 101 which displays the feed 1 11 with the selected content items 1 12 therein. As is shown in Figure 2, the feed 1 11 may locate across the lower portion of the digital display 109 and the content items 112 may scroll thereacross.
[0031 ] At step 132, the electronic device 109 may receive a content item 1 12 selection. Specifically, the electronic device 101 is configured for receiving a single user input and ascertaining the content item selection according to a current display position of a respective content item 1 12 within the content feed 111.
[0032] At step 133, the electronic device 101 sends the content item selection to the content feed server 104 wherein the content feed controller 120 thereof ascertains at least one user interest categorisation from the content item selection. For example, each content item 112 may have associated meta data specifying one or more categorisations. For example, for a content item 112 relating to a men’s surfing championship, the metadata associated therewith may comprise categorisations relating to sport, surfing and men’s surfing. As such, when receiving the content item selection of the content item 112 relation to men’s surfing, the content feed controller 121 may update the user interest categorisations 1 18 of the user’s user profile 1 19 with these categorisations.
[0033] In embodiments, each user interest categorisation 118 comprises a weighting for each category wherein the weighting is adjusted with each content item selection categorisation. As alluded to above, the user interest categorisations 1 18 may be hierarchical in nature wherein, when updating a weighting of a subcategory, the weighting of the parent category may be updated also.
[0034] As such, as the user makes content item selections, the user interest categorisations 1 18 of the associated user profile 1 19 continuously update to tailor the content items 112 fed in the content feed 1 11.
[0035] The digital display 109 may comprise a haptic overlay configured for receiving user input gestures in relation to the digital information 110 displayed thereon. As such, in one embodiment, the electronic device is configured for ascertaining the current content item selection from a haptic user input in relation to the current display position of the respective content item 1 12. For example, the user may simply tap one of the content items 112 while it is currently being displayed within the content feed 11 1. As alluded to above, selection of a content item 112 may cause content item selection content 125 to be displayed by the electronic device at step 133. In other words, the user may be more information into a news article or the like.
