Description

A COMPUTER IMPLEMENTED METHOD FOR CAPITALISING
POPULAR CULTURE
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to methods for operating real time data based upon individuals, characters, ‘influencers’ or personalities in an investment structure.
Background to the invention and prior art
Interactive investments in particular online have become popular since the ability of individuals/players to compete via an internet connection in real time. The term online investment is hereinafter intended to describe investment for entertainment, education by way of tokens and is distinct from online gambling or gaming where participants visit a website or open an account as a registered user, deposit funds and risk a stake in order to win money. Stock units is used interchangeably with shares.
Realtime connectivity of mobile devices with remote servers and databases provides greater opportunity for users to participate in such activities.
Many users who are online at any time are operating within social media networks, and as a consequence it is inevitable that many of such users will be aware of and interact with or ‘follow’ such characters, known commonly as ‘influencers’, who are active in both the online and offline worlds. It is also likely that such users will personally invest in such characters, mentally and emotionally, providing a ‘sentiment’ value to such influencers.
However it has been difficult to translate interest or such investment or sentiment to any success or gain in the physical world.
Previous simulation investment structures tended to be gamified versions of financial services. Often these investment structures present financial products or processes and did not offer a user any level of immersion or excitement or real world connectivity. As such they did not provide interest or motivation for those with interests beyond financial markets and so the flow state they engendered was poor. Therefore, many such investment structures failed to create a sustainable relationship with users.
Additionally, many users are frustrated by complex and often cryptic and unrewarding experiences as their only interaction with investment products or structures for example may be an annual performance statement.
In addition or the alternative finding new ways to grab the attention of users and engage them in a learning process about investments, financial markets and the like is a challenge.
There is therefore a need to create an investment structure that can inspire users to develop skills and monitor behaviour in an environment they understand and have knowledge and interest within, and can build upon emotional connections to known subject matter.
Additionally or alternatively for potential investors, creating an new asset class based on what the new investor understands and cares about, gives these users a competitive edge.
Inefficient markets mean only a selection of A-list characters can monetise their brand. Influence and performance is vague, which makes like-for-like comparisons difficult. However, whilst this does not mean that personalities do not have value, when they are not A-List characters, but in the world of social media and marketing they require tangible or quantifiable metrics or numerical values to accurately depict their value.
Summary of the invention
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a computer implemented method for trading in character monetisation stock units, operates on a user device which includes at least one processor operatively coupled with a memory, a display and a user interface, the processor operates in accordance with rules which are defined by software, the method comprising allocating normalised numerical values to said units, wherein the numerical values are formulated from data from data suppliers, and wherein the data suppliers comprise a plurality of users.
The stock units may be envisaged to be tradable for physical or digital currency units. In this way a valuation of characters’ influence and power in an attention economy can be quantified, additionally or alternatively enabling the characters and other parties to evaluate worth, impact or sentiment.
The data is processed through a matching engine, order matching system or matching system that matches buy and sell orders for a market comprised by the investment structure.
More particularly the present invention may provide a computer implemented method for trading in character monetisation stock units and manipulating real time data based on character monetisation stock units into an investment structure; the investment structure is accessible on a user device; wherein the method comprises the steps of: transmitting a request, via a communication network, to a data node and receiving a reply from the data node; authenticating the request; to allow trading in units which have at least one associated investment attribute related to character monetisation stock, the value and/or a characteristic of the at least one investment attribute depending upon the real time data.
In this way the present invention provides a trading platform for stock units based upon characters.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there may be provided a character-based investment structure for trading in stock units related to monetisation of such characters, wherein the structure may be formulated upon fundamental data supplied by data suppliers such as social media networks, net-worth evaluation systems, and/or media profile analysis, in addition to or the alternative of data provided by users and/or based on user trading.
A data supplier may thereby comprise data from a social media network, data from a media outlet, data from a net-worth evaluation entity, which may be accessed by, processed by and acted upon by the users for trading in stock units within the investment structure.
In some embodiments the investment structure relates to online characters, commonly known as influencers, wherein such term is used interchangeably with characters herein. Monetisation of such characters may be envisaged to be linked to the users observing increasing or decreasing social media followings and/or interactions, media profile, brand endorsement, third party net-worth calculations, number of social media followers, level of social media engagement, press exposure, price volatility, historical growth and a type of risk or other activity related to the character’s success monetarily or otherwise.
The present invention thereby enables the user to interact with and operate within an investment structure formed by the monetisation of the character, and enable the user to speculate on, invest in and trade with stock units related thereto.
This investment structure may thereby enable both a primary trading investment structure and/or a secondary trading investment structure, both in or on the user device. The trading structure may relate to and create markets accessible to users of the devices, and auxiliary services and their users.
In this way the present invention facilitates gain, be it financial, stock or market based, from investment in characters, enabling users to earn from real world volatility in character monetisation, and, for example to realise within an investment structure the impact of appreciation or depreciation in the ‘market value’ of a character.
In this way the present invention utilises data from a plurality of data suppliers operating in real time to supply and/or generate market or trading or numerical value data for the investment structure, which may be selectable by the user in order to enhance the user experience, as well as internally generated by trading of the users of the method, so as to enhance the user’s financial position.
In a preferred embodiment a method of the present invention enables users to leverage first party verified data from social media, 3rd party unverified data and tertiary to determine a fair price of an influencer stock unit. The data may or may not be available in the method or application specific software (app) but will not in any case impact or determine the valuation of the stock units directly.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improvement to a user’s experience of interacting with social media and characters by introducing a real time dimension and real world financial gains or losses.
In some embodiments the investment structure may include real world market data factors from the group comprising, but not limited to: price change performance, price volatility, historical growth, yield, or a particular class or type of risk. Other market data factors include market capitalisation, dividend payments or payment rate and traded market volume. Another market data factor which may be transformed to an associated investment attribute is an internal rate of return of an investment portfolio.
Such embodiment therefore enables such market data or its transformed investment structure units to be incorporated into stock units, shares or financial tokens. For example, sentiment, financial, media or social market data from data suppliers may be transformed into a format that is used in the investment structure to provide a financial asset value to a unit for later realisation outside the investment structure.
Although reference has been made to investments it will be appreciated that the invention may be used in various levels of engagement, referred to as engagement modes, which are available.
Interactions may be based on a user’s activities on an online platform. In some embodiments for example the number of associated or promoted or sponsored investment structures they interact with or invest in, as well as overall achievements. Other factors may be derived and utilised within the investment structure, such as those relating to user behaviours as mentioned below.
An investment structure management module may be adapted to package market data and provide it to the Financial Market Entertainment (FME) engine for supporting play. In some embodiments an aim of the present invention may be to provide financial institutions, such as banks, brokers and other finance-related companies with a tool and process so that they can provide their services to users optionally within a social media driven market environment or in relation to an investment structure based upon trading in stock units formulated upon characters.
A further object of the invention is to provide a platform that allows users to leverage their expertise and knowledge of popular culture and character awareness in an investment structure i.e. in relation to the financial services sector or investment markets.
The exploitation or monetisation of such knowledge or awareness provides tokenization of character sentiment to allow what are effectively virtual or digital assets as they are digital in nature and so can be securely traded. The tokenization of market assets, such as shares of a stock, as a basis for micro-investments may also be used as part of an educational tool in order to provide trading beginners with trading products and live interactions with the investment structure at micro-level of financial exposure. This is particularly useful in training players as well as identifying playing types, such as those with greater or lesser risk appetites.
Once the characters are tokenized into stock units, they can be used flexibly in any supported investment structure and may be directed to achieve casual micro derivatives (financial product) through fun investment. Such derivatives might be offered by the company or any licensed third party willing to issue such contracts with qualifying clients. Those derivatives might or might not be offered on the same trading platform.
According to a further aspect of the present invention therefore, the numerical values or stock units generated within the investment structure of the method may be subsequently rendered available to third party interfaces, structures, software or trading platforms.
It is appreciated that according to the further aspect of the present invention stock units may be interchanged on external trading platforms between users operating within the investment structure for example on different systems and different platforms and in different locations and jurisdictions. Access would entail fees for usage and potentially a licensing fee for access. On top of this data might also be a separate item as the data on the secondary market is a valuable commodity, to provide revenue off data sales.
Likewise, through use of the methods of the present invention non-digital assets may be tokenized and used in investment, allowing investments to go beyond a digital or virtual world and thereby facilitate virtual liquidity on which virtual financial markets, and/or entertainment or real world investments may be based.
In some embodiments the software may comprise a management module which includes: a menu which enables a user to register, sign in and create a profile. An optional chat feature may also be provided. An in-app (application specific software) chat integration may be switched on or turned off to provide a social element between users.
In some such embodiments the software or management module may provide features to enable the user to monitor, measure, track, access and manage real or virtual assets or financial funds and corresponding transformed units, and so may provide a safe and secure storage facility where asset accounts, stock units, and/or platform currencies may be stored or managed. In other embodiments storage is done separately and is leveraging a specialised custody third party.
Software development kit and software development tools may be provided together with tools, libraries, relevant documentation, code samples, processes, and or guides that allow developers to create software applications or features on a specific platform or existing software.
Features available in the software may include (without limitation): the ability to select engagement modes, the choice of numbers of units, users or characters, the types of interaction permitted between users or in relation to units, or characters. These features may permit solo as well as team investments for multiple users, such as leagues and/or aggregate investment products. In some embodiments integration to external payment services, such as to a brokerage or betting companies or payment service providers, , banks, market providers, as well as custody and settlement partners may also be facilitated with the software and/or investment structure. In some embodiments betting companies may refer to contract counterparty for the creation of derivative investment products.
A secure and/or distributed ledger may be provided in order to execute and record crediting and debiting of digital currencies and assets. The ledger itself is the place where ownership and transactions are recorded. The ledger may be a centrally operated distributed ledger.
Market data may be enhanced by use of services based on data analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence (Al). Market data may be accessed directly by the user, for example stored on a database for acquisition by at least one user using their device to access the database via a web-portal.
In some embodiments the calculation basis for stock units or numerical values thereof may be linked or connected to desired activities, memberships or skills. For example numerical values may be configured to increase or decrease a number of points according to successful behaviours, memberships and/or activity of the user. For example rewards may be earned based on the performance of activities or the reaching of predefined goals or milestones.
Business event logging services may be provided for creating user engagements, such as marketing automation and bonus events, and these may be provided for example by an advertising unit.
In some embodiments a skill or knowledge element may be present in relation to the stock units or character. For example, to include a requirement to answer questions relating to the character. Acquisition of knowledge and skills about the characters may be encouraged and rewarded with mechanisms such as sound, visual, increase of digital goods and social aspects, such as leader board, leagues, and the opportunity to share-on-social media. Advantageously by using some embodiments users can operate within an environment where flow can be achieved and financial gains made whilst learning about, or utilising knowledge of characters, teaching users about financial markets, financial instruments, investments and risks. This helps a user achieve more intense and focused concentration on aspects of the investment, finances, markets and risks whilst leveraging a user’s otherwise uncompensated social or popular culture knowledge and awareness. In addition, whilst using the method, the user becomes more motivated whilst remaining in a comfortable environment, but which is financially rewarding. In this way it may be envisaged that the investment structure according to the second aspect of the present invention may be compatible with, realised or operable within existing social networks. The character monetisation stock units may be formulated as the data supplier comprises a social media network.
In some embodiments a payment processing interface communicates with external (licensed) payment service providers as well as communicating with a transactions processing unit in order to enable transactions to take place with fiat money suppliers.
In some embodiments an advertising unit communicates with networks (internet and social media platforms) in order to generate traffic and enquiries.
In some embodiments a micro-investment investment structure may be operated to start at a cost of 1 cent or 1 penny, and provide an educational environment where the user is only allowed to access the that fits his/her level, where exposure is limited.
In still further embodiments a virtual currency investment structure may be envisaged according to a further aspect of the present invention, which structure may for example be based upon virtual or fictional characters.
Preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of an example only, and with reference to the Figures in which:

Detailed description of an embodiment of the invention
Referring to the Figures generally there are shown diagrammatic representations of an embodiment of a computer implemented method for trading in assets related to character monetisation stock units, operates on a user device which includes at least one processor operatively coupled with a memory, a display and a user interface, the processor operates in accordance with rules which are defined by software, the method comprising allocating numerical values to said units.
Without limitation a recorder records the stock units. A memory stores unit related data on a database for acquisition by at least one user using their device to access the database via a web-portal. It is appreciated that data may also be stored on a plurality of distributed digital ledgers in the form of a blockchain.
Within each of the aforementioned elements there may be sub-elements which may include: a technical event manager, a platform data manager, an order and payment processor, a developer’s portal, a service optimizer and a marketing and communication node.
Figures 1 and 2 in particular show an overall view of a software platform which comprises the following elements: A Know Your Customer (KYC) practice as shown in Figure 1 is carried out by the software to verify the identity of the user in compliance with legal requirements and current laws and regulations.
Further features are operable within the software, wherein in relation to Figures 2 the software is enabled to:
Figure 1a - create a trading account within the investment structure;
Figure 1b - top-up trading account with funding for use in the investment structure; Figure 1 c - view funds within the trading account;
Figure 1d - view stock units within the trading account;

The method for transforming market data comprises the steps of transmitting a request from a data supplier and processing the request from the data supplier, for example adding or subtracting stock units from a ledger. The next step verifies the authenticity of the request and the data supplier. This is achieved using a communication system which may employ a public-private key encryption algorithm.
Data suppliers may be envisaged to comprise the users, or may include fundamental data suppliers such as social media networks, digital and print media companies and conglomerates, financial institutions, fan communities, brands and fellow characters. Alternatively data is provided to users within the method by such forms of data supplier. In some embodiments the users are charged for the data from such data suppliers. In some embodiments such data suppliers are charged for supplying such data to the users, for example through advertising revenue.
In response to at least one verification signature which verifies the authenticity of the request and the data supplier, a supplier network node is configured to supply the real time data to a data processing unit which receives and normalises the data for use within the investment structure. A normalisation engine receives data from different data suppliers, and normalises the data for use on the platform so that different data types and formats can be standardised for subsequent use within the investment structure. The normalised data is then curated and/or transformed by a data transformation engine which curates or transforms the normalised data into so-called curated/transformed normalised data forming numerical values. Curated/transformed normalised data may be stored on a database for subsequent retrieval or verification.
The normalised data from the data processing unit may be received and transformed and curated by the normalisation engine which transforms the data into numerical values and stock units corresponding thereto.
Once data is normalised it can be transformed for use in the investment structure and may be curated or enriched for use as the stock units. The criteria that are employed during normalisation may include without limitation a data supplier code, a time and date stamp, an issue code and a financial instrument identity tag.
The values of the units are normalised in accordance with criteria specified by the normalisation engine which are related to data supplied by data suppliers in relation to character monetisation. Once normalised both raw and associated normalised data may be stored on a database, as may be required in some jurisdictions for compliance and legislative purposes.
A data processing unit is configured to receive data from data suppliers and normalises the financial market data throughout various data suppliers to one normalised internal format so that normalised data can be used by the investment structure.
A transaction processing unit provides internal bookkeeping and accounting and handles accounting transactions for sending and receiving tokens to/from other users and/or to/from the financial market entertainment engines or to/from fiat money payment providers. As shown in the Figures the normalised data forms an influencer index which is used within the investment structure in order to delineate stock units.
Users connect via their devices to an internet access portal to a Financial Market Entertainment (FME) platform, and are thereby enabled to trade in stock units defined by the investment structure. The device may operate a communication system which has an SSL-certificate secured connection, or a communication system employing a public-private key encryption algorithm.
Users therefore are able to learn and in a simulated real-world environment using real and live market data, for example providing monies which may be free-to-play, or with low, optionally fixed participation fees.
As shown in Figure 5 further data suppliers may be ingested, cached, and represented either as a standard view to all users or in a unique format to cater to the assumed interests of individuals based on known preferences. This is as known in the art of how an investment solution might provide access to specific news channels and data relating to the fundamentals of the business.
Further tacit or untacit data available on social media, news, gossip, etc. may be envisaged to describe what users find outside the platform and use consciously or unconsciously when they trade on the investment structure. This data might at some point be re-introduced by users in social interactions by the users as comments sections, posts or otherwise. This representation of data will be anecdotal and user- driven.
Social media data suppliers is undoubtedly expected to impact the trading and price movement most on the structure. Flowever, in the pictured embodiment it will do so purely on the basis that users speculate on the change in value of an influencer based on what happens on social media or such data suppliers.
The Figures depict an embodiment of a system for transforming real time financial market data, received from at least one authenticated data supplier, into a unit whose value is normalised and curated, transformed for use in an investment structure; the investment structure operated on a user device which includes at least one processor operatively coupled with a memory, a display and a user interface and which operates in accordance with investment structure rules which are defined by software, the system comprises: a means that transmits a request from a data supplier; a means for verifying authenticity of the request and the data supplier in response to at least one verification signature which verifies the authenticity of the request and the data supplier, a supplier network node which is configured to supply the real time market data to a normalisation engine which normalises the market data, the values of the real time market data are normalised in accordance with criteria specified by the normalisation engine, via a configured supplier network node; the specified criteria include at least one of: a data supplier code, a time and a date stamp, an issue code and a financial instrument identity tag in order to generate normalised market data; the normalised market data is communicated to at least one transformation engine via a microservice; the transformation engine curates the normalised market data into curated normalised data in dependence upon data that is derived from at least one data factor associated with a real world character; and issues a stock unit which has at least one associated investment structure attribute, the value and/or a characteristic of the at least one investment structure attribute depending upon the curated normalised data.
As shown in the Figures a primary market is provided where the Goal of the primary market or issuance is to sell new stock units to users and raise funds in the process. The primary market or issuance serves also to distribute the stock units to investors or users so they can later be traded freely on the secondary market.
Issuances may be envisaged to happen a number of times. For example for the first issuance, a percentage of the total shares will be issued, in subsequent issues a second percentage of the total shares will be issued each time until all 100% of the maximum shares are issued. The criteria for issuing multiple times may be controlled and may refer to the popularity of an influencer. For example for each new issue, more shares will be added so if the market for an influencer is not liquid or if the value has dropped significantly then it might be judged to not be advantageous to issue more shares. As shown in the Figures a secondary market is provided as known in the art or as seen in the equities markets like the LSE (London Stock Exchange). Here any listed asset can be freely traded during the market open hours. This happens through Sell and buy orders submitted by users. These orders are relayed to the matching engine, which based on defined rules will match orders based on parameters like time of order submitting, size of order, price of order (Sell or buy price, etc.)
Once any given trade matches, either in its entirety or partially a settlement process occurs where money and the assets change hands. This is recorded on the ledger to ensure that no assets can be misplaced, duplicated or otherwise lost. This also ensures that the method or investment structure will not ever provide any credit as any buy order or sell order cannot be facilitated if the asset or funds are not available.
The investment structure and interactions therewithin by the user may allow institutions, such as banks, to educate, monitor performance and qualify their customers for certain types of financial products. However, it is appreciated that this area is heavily regulated in some jurisdictions due to data protection laws and for the purposes of offering financial and investment advice. Therefore, with proper regulatory approval a third party may be given access to a user’s play in order to derive historical trading data and preferences, a user trading skills profile and a user risk profile.
Although reference to real-time play has been made it will be appreciated that this may relate to longer time intervals, such less than a minute, less than one hour, less than a day, less than a week, less than a month, less than a quarter year, less than a year. A value for the at least one market data factor is thereby obtained over an average of time T, where T is from the group comprising: real time (less than a second), less than a minute, less than one hour, less than a day, less than a week, less than a month, less than a quarter year, less than a year.
In use of the method, the following steps are envisaged in the pictured embodiment:
Announcing the new issue of an influencer or character
Taking orders for that in the form of a qty of shares at a maximum price point Determining a fair price and what investors should be allocated what shares according to a number of parameters.
Settlement - exchange of cash and assets
Secondary trading.
One of the core components of the method is infrastructure providing a ledger-based custody system which allows creation and maintenance of a list of users who on a custody and settlement ledger are able to own various types of assets as defined by the method. These assets will be the influencer stock units and all ownership of these assets will be recorded on the ledger, this means that when users invest or trade these the ledger will keep a perfect record of the ownership as the changes to ownership occurs during settlement. A representation of funds will also be available, and real world funds by interfacing with a banking provider such that real world funds may be monitored at any given time.
According to a further aspect of the invention access to such ledger and data contained thereon in respect to the investment structure may be accessed by and packaged through third parties.
Figures 3 to 5 show operation of a ledger, custody ledger or investment ledger, as operated within the custody ledger structure.
As shown in Figure 9 methods encompassed within the present invention comprise issuance mechanics.
As shown in Figure 10 methods encompassed within the present invention comprise multiple steps in interaction with the data received from multiple data suppliers, including users and social media, and processing thereof.
In particular the investment structure enabled by the present invention provides a means of operating a trading structure for stock units based upon personalities or characters or influencers (an ‘influencer index’), provides a comparative data structure for evaluating the relative attraction of personalities or characters or influencers (a ‘sentiment index’) as well as a means of leveraging the data generated within the investment structure to provide individual influence quantification metrics. In particular it may be envisaged that pricing mechanisms generated within the market of the investment structure or method will enable operators of the method of the invention or third parties a method to quantify the influence of influencers, personalities or characters.
As shown in Figure 11 according to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a method encompassed within the present invention comprises allocation and issuance methods in relation to stock units, characters, and the investment structure more generally.
The invention has been described by way of example only and variation may be made to the aforementioned embodiments without departing from the scope of protection as defined by the claims.
