Description

DESCRIPTION
"Computer-implemented method for registering wholesale
Internet domains" * * *
The present invention is related to a computer- implemented method for registering wholesale Internet domains. In particular, the present invention is related to a computer-implemented method for registering wholesale
Internet domains comprising logic for optimizing the verification of the availability of the identification string of a specific domain name chosen by a registrant, i.e., a physical or legal person intent on possessing the ownership of the domain name in question.
An Internet domain name consists of a concatenation of strings, separated by dots, which identify the domain within the Internet, and which comply with the rules of the DNS, i.e., the Domain Name System. Internet domain names are used in various network contexts, more specifically for naming or addressing, and represent generally Internet Protocol (IP) resources, such as a host terminal used to access the web, a server hosting a website or the website itself, or any other service accessible through the Internet. Unlike IP addresses, where the most significant part is the first one, starting from the left, in a DNS name the most important part is the first one starting from the right, the so called TLD or first level Internet domain, such as ".it", ".org",
".com".
The operation of registering an Internet domain name requires an initial search aimed at verifying the availability of the same domain name, that certifies that the string of interest is not occupied, i.e., already uniquely associated with a registrant, for example a physical or legal person who has previously already registered the same string through the services of a registrar, such as an Internet operator acting as a service provider, with an authority, i.e. a domain registry, which manages and maintain the domains themselves.
Several methods for registering Internet domains are currently known.
A first technical example of a known method for registering Internet domains, available in the patent literature, is described by the patent application
EP1718033A1 that discloses a method and apparatus for registering an Internet domain name, for a mobile terminal capable of implementing packet switching communication, in which an IP address has been assigned to the same terminal within a mobile network. An Internet domain name is first determined for the terminal, and a domain name registration request is then sent, via a mobile network, to an Internet domain name registration authority in the name of the terminal, including the aforementioned domain name and IP address. In the event that the IP address initially assigned to the mobile terminal is subsequently no longer valid, a request for the cancellation of the domain in question is sent.
The patent application KR20010070712A, in addition, describes a method for searching and registering a multi- domain on the Internet, allowing a user to look for a plurality of names, similar in their entirety. The method involves a server querying a list of domain names and a communication, generated by connecting to a network, with a server managing and/or maintaining domains. A data transmission module transmits the request, and the result received from the server is analyzed through a specific module. The domain search result is executed in succession, and a data conversion module converts and processes the result information, subsequently stored in a file system or a database, eventually breaking the connection with the server. Furthermore, the patent application US2010146001A1 discloses systems that allow for generating domain names relevant to current events. An exemplary system may comprise a website, hosted on at least one server, that may have one or more fields for submitting a request for a domain name that relates to current events, wherein the request may not include a keyword, search term, or suggested domain name. The exemplary system also may comprise a domain name generation module and a domain name registration module, both of which may run on at least one server. The domain name generation module may generate at least one domain name relevant to current events, and the domain name registration module may offer such generated domain names for registration, if available. The patent application US2004167982A1 describes systems and methods for domain name registration. A domain application programming interface, i.e., an API, is employed as an interface between one or more clients and a plurality of registrars, or providers. The domain API can return alternate domain names if a requested domain name is unavailable. The domain API can also implement failover among the registrars. Employing a plurality of registrars facilitates load-sharing and improved system performance. Finally, the patent application US2002152206A1 describes an application and a method to improve the search for an Internet domain name by increasing the range of search terms by means of selected synonyms, obtained from a standard thesaurus program. The keywords are compared to the same terms in the thesaurus program. The domain name permutations considered by the search program are expanded to keywords augmented with synonyms. By examining the permutations of the specified search terms, and expanding the same search to synonyms, a user is offered a wider range of domain names.
However, the aforementioned known methods for registering Internet domains suffer from the issue of not providing an efficient search for the alphanumeric string, identifying the domain name, of interest to the registrant. The purpose of the present invention is to provide a computer-implemented method for registering wholesale Internet domains that allows the suggestion and search for the availability of alternative and similar strings, on the basis of boundary conditions, to the one of primary interest in the event that this is not available for registration because it is already occupied, so that such a computer- implemented method has characteristics that overcome the limitations that still affect the current method for registering Internet domains, with reference to the known technique.
According to the present invention a computer- implemented method for registering wholesale Internet domains is provided, as defined in claim 1.
For a better understanding of the present invention, a preferred embodiment is now described, purely by way of non limiting example, with reference to the attached drawing, in which: - figure 1 shows a flow chart explaining steps of a method for registering Internet domains, according to the invention.
With reference to the aforementioned figure, a computer-implemented method for registering wholesale Internet domains is shown, according to the invention.
In particular, the computer-implemented method 100 for registering wholesale Internet domains comprises the steps of: verifying the availability of a first string identifying an Internet domain name within reference domain registries, by means of API modules comprised in an Internet domain management platform and configured for interfacing a domain platform of a registrar with the aforementioned reference domain registries; - registering the Internet domain name corresponding, i.e., identified, to the first string, by means of the domain platform of the registrar, following a positive outcome of the previous step of verifying the availability of the first string identifying an Internet domain name within the reference domain registries;
- generating a list of alternative strings by means of an algorithm comprised in the Internet domain management platform and configured to process data related to a registrant of the first string and further data, following a negative outcome of the previous step of verifying the availability of the first string;
- evaluating the list of alternative strings identified during the previous step, by means of the algorithm comprised in the Internet domain management platform, in order to suggest at least one alternative string qualitatively more relevant to the first string.
According to an aspect of the invention, the computer- implemented method 100 comprises also the step of verifying the availability of the at least one alternative string comprised in the list of the alternative strings, within the reference domain registries, by means of the API modules configured for interfacing the domain platform of the registrar with the reference domain registries. According to another aspect of the invention, the step of generating the list of alternative strings comprises the concatenation of pre-fixed or post-fixed alphanumeric characters to the first string and/or the generation of at least one further string qualitatively relevant to the first string.
According to another aspect of the invention, the aforementioned pre-fixed or post-fixed alphanumeric characters, and/or the at least one further string qualitatively relevant to the first string, are generated through a variable and dynamic processing of the data related to the registrant of the first string, and of the further data, by means of the algorithm comprised in the Internet domain management platform. According to an aspect of the invention, such a dynamic processing of the data related to the registrant of the first string, and of the further data, according to a smart correlation consequence of the different kinds of such data, allows to suggest the alternative strings qualitatively more relevant to the first string, as previously disclosed.
According to an aspect of the invention, the computer- implemented method 100 comprises the step of registering at least one additional Internet domain name, corresponding and identified by the at least one available alternative string, by means of the domain platform of the registrar, following the previous step of verifying the availability of at least one alternative string within the reference domain registries . According to another aspect of the invention, the data related to the registrant of the first string and the further data, processed during the step of generating the list of alternative strings, are comprised in the group consisting of: - data concerning the geolocation of the registrant;
- reference business sector of the registrant;
- lists of premium Internet domains;
- lists of Internet domains to be canceled soon.
For example, if the wholesale Internet domain name of interest *.it were not available, the computer-implemented method 100 according to the invention would suggest, and would allow to register, alternative wholesale Internet domain names based on alternative TLDs (e.g., *.com, *.net, *.biz, etc.), but above all wholesale Internet domain names based on the concatenation of pre-fixed or post-fixed alphanumeric characters to the first, originally preferred string, generated by the aforementioned variable and dynamic processing of the data related to the registrant of the first string, and of the further data, by means of the algorithm comprised in the Internet domain management platform. According to the disclosed example, the dynamic and smart processing of the previously mentioned data would suggest alternative stings, and corresponding Internet domain names, such as ^consulting.it (with reference to the reference business sector of a customer of the registrar, i.e., the registrant), *mi.it, *na.it (according to the geolocation of the same registrant), pre-fixing or post-fixing alphanumeric characters to the first, originally preferred string. Still, according to the disclosed example, the dynamic and smart processing of the previously mentioned data would suggest, in addition or alternately, at least one further string qualitatively relevant to the first string, such as assistenzaimpresa.com (based upon the lists of premium input domains and the business sector of the registrant).
According to an aspect of the invention, the registrar is preferably a wholesale Internet service provider, commonly referred to as ISP.
According to an aspect of the invention, the aforementioned premium Internet domains are domains auctioning in the secondary market, i.e., a group of domains registered at once by a natural or legal person that subsequently resell those same domains itself. In use, therefore, the computer-implemented method 100 according to the invention comprises logical steps related to the registration of wholesale Internet domain names performed by registrars, preferably Internet service providers or ISPs, through their own domain platform which interface with domain registries by means of the API modules comprised in an Internet domain management platform subject of the invention.
According to the invention, registrars according to the invention are also intermediary third parties, other than ISPs, that manage the registration of wholesale Internet domain names by means of a web-based control panel, i.e., a GUI representing a frontend section comprised within the aforementioned Internet domain management platform subject of the invention. Such a control panel allows these registrars, different from ISPs, to manage Internet domain names in all aspects, that is, to carry out, in addition to registering, transferring, maintaining and canceling the Internet domain names themselves. According to the invention, registrars other than ISPs take advantage of the services of the Internet domain management platform through, preferably, a protected and reserved access, paying the aforementioned services on the basis of a rechargeable credit. According to the invention, the logic inherent in the computer-implemented method 100, comprising the API modules and the algorithm, configured to process data related to a registrant of the first string and further data, and also to suggest at least one alternative strings qualitatively more relevant to the first string, is part of a back-end section comprised within the Internet domain management platform. Exploiting the functionalities of the backend section, specific interfacing operations towards several domain registries are implemented and coded, more specifically through the API modules.
The present invention is also related to a processing block, which comprises a plurality of logic modules able to perform at least one of the steps of the computer-implemented method 100 for registering wholesale Internet domains.
According to an aspect of the invention, the aforementioned processing block, for example a cloud-based- application, is performed by at least one electronic device.
According to another aspect of the invention, such an electronic device is a terminal provided with at least one network interface and with Internet access, preferably a cloud server.
According to an aspect of the invention, the plurality of logic modules is connected to reference domain registries by means of API modules comprised in an Internet domain management platform.
Therefore, the computer-implemented method for registering wholesale Internet domains according to the invention allows to optimize the registration procedures of wholesale Internet domain names, performed by registrars such as Internet service providers, involved in searching the availability, registering and maintaining web domains.
In addition, the computer-implemented method for registering wholesale Internet domains according to the invention suggests possible alternative domain names to be registered, based on the processing of data concerning the registrant and further data, alternative domain names that are generated concatenating an additional alphanumeric sequence to the originally preferred string.
A further advantage of the computer-implemented method for registering wholesale Internet domains according to the invention is that it is efficient and functional.
Another advantage of the method for registering wholesale Internet domains according to the invention is that its functionalities are easy to integrate with Internet service providers' web management platforms, thanks to specific API modules. It is finally clear that the computer-implemented method for registering wholesale Internet domains, described and illustrated herein, may be subject to modifications and variations without departing from the protective scope of the present invention, as defined in the appended claims.
