Description

ELECTRONIC APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING A USER DEVICE
The present invention relates to an electronic apparatus for controlling a user device.
Electronic apparatuses are known today and increasingly widespread for commanding an electric or electronic user device, for example an electronic lock of an access door to a environment, or a vehicle door, which are usually complex and very costly, not least because of the high level of security that they have to ensure.
Such apparatuses are for example fingerprint readers, electronic keypads, magnetic cards, access badges, infrared remote controls and the like.
For example, electronic locks are widely used in residential contexts and especially in the hospitality sector for managing entry to rooms, parking spaces and other areas reserved for clients, and are also used, similarly, in public places where access is reserved such as for example fitness gyms.
The less burdensome systems among those cited are based on the adoption of the above mentioned magnetic cards, or access badges, or remote controls, which must be given to the clients.
Such cards, access badges and remote controls must be periodically renewed owing to normal wear from use.
Furthermore, cards, access badges and remote controls constitute an item that must be treated with care and attention by the user to whom it has been given for temporary use, since the user is called on not to lose such item, and not to forget it, under penalty of inability to access the premises for which the item is the key, and naturally not to break it.
Furthermore, such conventional apparatuses can be intercepted and their anti-intrusion protective function defeated by ill-intentioned individuals equipped with special equipment.
The aim of the present invention is to provide an electronic apparatus for controlling a user device, which is capable of overcoming the limitations of the cited known art.
Within this aim, an object of the invention is to provide an apparatus that can be adapted with or without the adoption of cards, remote controls, access badges and other, similar items.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus that is economic compared to other, conventional apparatuses and recognition means such as fingerprint readers, keypads and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus that can be easily installed and is simple and intuitive to use.
This aim and these and other objects which will become better evident hereinafter are achieved by an electronic apparatus for controlling a user device, characterized in that it comprises:
- a portable controller, comprising means for emitting light pulses in the visible spectrum which define an encoded command signal for an electronic unit for the control and management of a user device,
- a device for picking up said command signal and for processing said command signal into an outgoing signal toward a user device,
said signal pickup and processing device comprising:
- signal receiving means, adapted to detect said light pulses in the visible spectrum,
- said electronic control and management unit, interconnected to said receiving means, designed to decode the light pulses detected by said receiving means and to determine an outgoing signal toward a user device,
- power supply means.
Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will become better apparent from the description of three preferred, but not exclusive, embodiments of the apparatus according to the invention, which are illustrated for the purposes of non-limiting example in the accompanying drawings wherein:
- Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of an apparatus according to the invention in a first embodiment thereof;
- Figure 2 is a schematic perspective view of an apparatus according to the invention in a second embodiment thereof;
- Figure 3 is a schematic perspective view of an apparatus according to the invention in a third embodiment thereof.
With reference to the figures, an electronic apparatus for controlling a user device, according to the invention, is generally designated in a first embodiment thereof with the reference numeral 10.
Such electronic apparatus 10 comprises:
- a portable controller 11, comprising means 12 for emitting light pulses in the visible spectrum, which define an encoded command signal 17 for an electronic unit 13 for the control and management of a generic user device, which is designated with 18,
- a device 14 for picking up the command signal 17 and for processing the command signal 17 into an outgoing signal toward a user device 18.
The signal pickup and processing device 14 comprises:
- signal receiving means 15, adapted to detect the light pulses in the visible spectrum,
- the electronic control and management unit 13, interconnected to the receiving means 15, designed to decode the light pulses detected by the receiving means 15 and to determine an outgoing signal toward the user device 18,
- power supply means 16.
The portable controller 11 is constituted, for example, by a smartphone, which should be understood as being of known type.
The means 12 for emitting light pulses in the visible spectrum are constituted by a display for showing videos on the screen of the smartphone.
The smartphone mentioned so often in the present description can conveniently be substituted by another portable controller 11 that comprises means 12 for emitting light pulses in the visible spectrum, such as for example a tablet computer, a smartwatch, a video player or a portable computer.
The light pulses in the visible spectrum, which define an encoded command signal 17, are transmitted by way of a special video, provided by way of a smartphone application, loaded on the same smartphone, which is adapted to convert an alphanumeric code, specified by a user, into a video adapted to display a sequence of alternating black and white images or of images in other colors, which in any case define, in their sequential succession, a code for the activation or deactivation of a user device 18.
Using a video display for transmitting the encoded command signal is more secure than using the photography flash of a smartphone, the reason being that if the battery is low then the flash of the smartphone will be deactivated, while the video display is always available for use.
Alternatively, the means 12 for emitting light pulses in the visible spectrum can be constituted by the photography flash of the smartphone.
The signal receiving means 15 are constituted by one or more detector photodiodes 20, which are connected to the electronic unit 13 by way of corresponding electrical connections 21 , and are capable of detecting the signals in the visible spectrum.
The detector photodiode 20 detects the light pulses emitted by the video display of the smartphone and translates them into signals for the electronic unit 13, which is arranged for example inside a box-like body 22.
The electronic unit 13 is programmed to decode the light pulses 17 and translate them into a signal to open or close, or a general switching signal, for the user device 18.
In a variation of embodiment of the invention, the signal receiving means 15 are constituted by a video camera.
In another variation of embodiment of the invention, the signal receiving means 15 are constituted by a phototransistor. The device 14 for signal pickup and processing comprises the boxlike body 22 with the electronic unit 13 inside it, such box-like body 22 also having means 24 for communicating information to the user, for example a display.
The device 14 also comprises one or more LEDs 23 for indicating the operating status.
The device 14 also comprises means 25 for learning the command code, for example a button, or an additional photodiode, or a video camera, or another, similar and equivalent component.
By way of the learning means 25, the preset command code is stored in the electronic unit 13.
The device 14 also comprises the power supply means 16, which are constituted by a battery 26, arranged inside the box-like body 22, and by electrical connections 27 for connection with an external power supply 28.
The device 14 also comprises connections 29 with the user device 18.
Such connections 29 can be of the electrical type, for the transmission of an electrical signal, or of the optical type, in optical fiber, for the transmission of a light signal.
The connection with the user device 18 can also occur by way of the transmission of a radio signal or a wireless signal in general, by way of adapted components of the electronic unit 13, which should be understood as being of known type.
The user device 18 can be a relay, or a dry contact.
In a second embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention, shown schematically in Figure 2 and designated therein with the reference numeral 110, the device for signal pickup and processing 114 comprises a box-like containment body 122, which contains the electronic unit 113, with power supply means 116 constituted exclusively by electrical connections 127 for connection with an external power supply 128.
The receiving means 115 are understood to be the same ones described above for the first embodiment of the apparatus 10 in Figure 1.
In a third embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention, shown schematically in Figure 3 and designated therein with the reference numeral 210, the device for signal pickup and processing 214 comprises a box-like container 222, which contains the electronic unit 213, with power supply means 216 constituted exclusively by electrical connections 227 for connection with an external power supply 228.
Such device 214 also comprises means 225 for learning the command code, for example a button, or a photodiode, or a USB port.
Such device 214 also comprises a LED 223 for indicating the operating status.
The receiving means 215 are understood to be the same ones described above for the first embodiment of the apparatus 10 in Figure 1.
Such second and third embodiments are simpler with respect to the first embodiment of the apparatus 10 and therefore less costly.
With the invention an apparatus 10, 110 and 210 has therefore been devised which is capable of transmitting a code by way of the screen of a smartphone and more precisely such code is transmitted by way of the video display of the smartphone, the code being determined by the sequence of light signals of a special video.
Transmitting the code in video format is not penalized by the other applications and directly uses the video card of the smartphone.
An important advantage of the present apparatus 10, 110 and 210 according to the invention is constituted by the fact that it can be applied in any context, such as doors, electrical apparatuses, and the like, it being effectively an advanced on/off switch, and it is managed without the user having to carry special devices with them such as access badges, keys, remote controls and the like, thus eliminating the risk of loss, malfunction, or breakage thereof, since the portable device is defined by a smartphone which usually the user will already have in their possession. The novelty of the apparatus according to the invention is that it uses a video to transmit the command code; it is therefore low cost and can operate with all apparatuses that are capable of reproducing a video.
Such apparatus 10, 110 and 210 can be applied to any electrical apparatus that requires unlocking/activation, it is secure in that it uses a user-configurable code, and it is universal in that it is not designed for a certain application.
For example, applying such an apparatus 10, 110 or 210 according to the invention to a system of electronic locks, for example of a hotel, makes it possible to give customers a key for the electronic locks without having to hand over magnetic cards, access badges, or remote controls, simply by allowing the customer to use their smartphone conveniently provided with the special application adapted to convert a recognition code to a sequence of light pulses emitted by the video display of the smartphone.
It should be understood, as mentioned above, that the electronic apparatus 10, 110 and 210 according to the invention can be applied not only to doors and closure elements for residential environments, but also to doors of vehicles, or to the door of a safe, and other applications that are similar and equivalent, and in general anywhere a switch is required.
In practice it has been found that the invention fully achieves the intended aim and objects.
In particular, with the invention an apparatus is provided that does not entail the adoption of cards, remote controls, access badges and other, similar items, which thus do not pose any encumbrance for a user, and there is no risk of loss or breakage thereof.
Moreover, with the invention an apparatus is provided which is economic compared to electronic devices of known type for controlling and commanding switches, for example with conventional means of recognition using fingerprints or keypads, since the detection means using the video camera and photodiode are relatively economic, and the smartphone is already in the possession of the user, and there is therefore no cost to the organization that adopts an electronic apparatus according to the invention.
Also, with the invention an apparatus is provided which can be installed easily, since it is sufficient to fit the photodiode detection means and the signal pickup and processing device in the user device, and it is simple and intuitive to use since nowadays the use of smartphones is very widespread and the ease of use of these is intrinsic.
With the invention an apparatus is provided which, by way of the application loaded on the smartphone, is easily remotely programmable and controllable, and similarly it should be understood that the electronic control and management unit associated with the means for detecting the light pulses is remotely programmable with conventional means.
Moreover, with the invention an apparatus is provided which has improved security compared to conventional traditional systems (wireless LAN, Bluetooth, electronic keypads and the like); in fact by placing the smartphone on a flat surface provided with for example a spyhole for receiving/sending the light signal, no risk is run of sending codes or data that could be intercepted by air by an ill-intentioned individual.
The invention, thus conceived, is susceptible of numerous modifications and variations, all of which are within the scope of the appended claims. Moreover, all the details may be substituted by other, technically equivalent elements.
In practice the components and the materials employed, provided they are compatible with the specific use, and the contingent dimensions and shapes, may be any according to requirements and to the state of the art.
The disclosures in Italian Patent Application No. 102015000027445 from which this application claims priority are incorporated herein by reference.
Where technical features mentioned in any claim are followed by reference signs, such reference signs have been inserted for the sole purpose of increasing the intelligibility of the claims and accordingly such reference signs do not have any limiting effect on the interpretation of each element identified by way of example by such reference signs.
