Abstract
The present invention proposes an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and comprising a control unit effecting operation of said image display device, said control unit being configured to decode a broadcast TV program being received, to extract subtitle content of the program on a channel from a transport stream thereof and to display individual subtitle elements of the subtitle content in association with the broadcast TV program in a manner to be rewound or fast forwarded independent of the time-dependant flow of the subtitle content in association with said broadcast TV program.
Description
The present invention relates to an image display device having an alternative subtitle viewing feature such that users are delivered a subtitle set of a TV program broadcast so as to be processable to view other elements of the subtitle set other than the actually viewable time-dependant subtitle element.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs leading to the general outcome that conventional methods for setting personal viewing preferences including subtitle management may become inefficient to the extent that such methods are simply unperformable in an efficient manner.
Assuming that image display devices today offer a versatile and wide range of functions, services as well as connectivity to the Internet, a plurality of services and applications retrieve information from various sources such as broadcast service providers and Internet, it is desirable to combine the retrieved information that is processed in accordance with a given user’s interests to be displayable on the TV screen.
Although TV broadcast service providers generally provide a plurality of subtitle sets in different languages in association with a program content such as a movie, users are only allowed to view the real-time subtitle element of the subtitle set in synchronization with the audio/video content of the movie. Although presentation of subtitles in this way ensures an appropriate viewing experience with synchronized audio/video and subtitle content, it might happen that users desire to view other elements of the subtitle set, such other elements being not in synchronization with the audio/video content of the program convent being actually viewed.
Accordingly, in accordance with the present invention, users can be offered presentation of alternative subtitle elements of the subtitle set of a program content so as to be able to reach desired parts thereof.
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as WO2005050626, which discloses a personalized subtitle system. The personalized subtitle system includes a display device, such as a Heads Up Display (HUD) device, worn or carried by a user in a public venue such as a movie theatre, playhouse, or stadium. The user utilizes the display device to select and read captioning or subtitle information for a public event such as a movie, play, or sporting event. In this way, subtitles in a variety of languages are supplied for the public event. In another embodiment, the display device is used in conjunction with a conventional subtitle display system, such as a DVD player for home use. In either embodiment, the user can operate a control panel to select a desired language. Subtitles in the selected language are then displayed to a viewer wearing or using the display device. In this way, a viewer desiring subtitles may have subtitles displayed without disrupting another viewer's enjoyment of a public venue.
The present invention provides a system and method by which an image display device is operated such that users are deliverable no real-time subtitle elements of a subtitle set in association with a program content displayed on a TV channel. The present invention therefore proposes a technical solution in order for reaching relevant parts of a subtitle set while interrupting or disrupting the actual TV viewing experience in a minimal manner.
The present invention provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to display no real-time subtitle elements of a subtitle set in association with a program content displayed on a TV channel, as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method for operating an image display device by which users can reach desired relevant parts of a subtitle set while interrupting or disrupting the actual TV viewing experience in a minimal manner.
The present invention proposes a system and method by which a broadcast TV program being received, and the subtitle content thereof is extracted. The metadata file is then processable to display individual subtitle elements of the subtitle content such that the user can rewind back to a previous entry or record in the form of a subtitle element containing at least one subtitle line, thereby being capable of reviewing missed subtitle content.
In case a previous record of subtitle is reviewed, the time-dependant flow of the subtitle content corresponding to the actual audio/video content of the broadcast TV program is temporarily stopped until the user is done with the reviewing process. When the reviewing process is over, the flow of subtitles resumes but the subtitles which would otherwise appear if the user did not rewind back to previous records, are not displayed and the subtitle elements in synchronization with the actual audio/video content of the broadcast TV program are shown.
In the case of dynamic subtitle contents such as stock market data which may frequently change in a dynamic fashion, the image display device periodically checks updated subtitle contents provided by broadcast service providers.
Additionally, the user can also perform keyword searches and locate important information in a much quicker manner. In this case, user-defined keywords are searched in the subtitle content and matching individual subtitle elements are presented on the screen.
If the subtitle content of the broadcast TV program is delivered in multiple languages, the user can simultaneously view on the screen both the manually located subtitle element and its corresponding language alternatives.
An image display device with network connectivity function can also receive the subtitle content of the broadcast TV program from a remote source via a network connection.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes the method of subtitle processing according to the present invention.
The present invention provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to display subtitles in a manner to be rewound or fast forwarded. According to the invention, the user can continue his/her TV viewing experience by temporarily stopping flow of subtitles and displaying a certain subtitle element of the subtitle set in association with a broadcast TV program on the screen.
In accordance with the invention, the image display device processes the TV channel or program and retrieves the subtitle content thereof as explained hereinafter. The image display device of the present invention is fitted with an internal memory in order for processing and storing the retrieved subtitles.
The subtitles are conventionally retrieved by processing the transport stream of a certain channel on a transponder as selected by the user. To this end, the user first determines the channel to be viewed. The main controller unit of the image display device decodes the program being received via a tuner and the subtitle content of the program is automatically extracted from the transport stream thereof.
Processing of the transport stream conventionally comprises the steps of receiving a packet having the PID value of 0. A Program Map Table (PMT) describes programs representing television channels with a unique PID. The streams associated with a certain given program have PIDs listed in the PMT. The receiver therefore decodes each PID associated with its program to retrieve one video stream, occasionally more than one audio stream, and any necessary metadata. In the case of dynamic subtitle contents such as sporting event scores or stock market data, metadata files being periodically updated by the broadcast service providers are processed.
The present invention therefore provides that the subtitle content of the TV program being viewed can be rewound or fast forwarded such that the user is allowed to reach previous subtitle lines, for example just to check a subtitle line he/she was unable to read. This function, while activated, enables the user to view subtitle records as individual elements comprising a certain number of lines depending on the actual program content in the manner to be changeable forward and backward independent of the actual program content. Therefore, each of the subtitle elements normally being time-dependant to the actual program content can be viewed manually and irrespective of the specific time information (timestamp). When the user reaches a missed line, he/she can immediately return to an actual time-dependant subtitle and continue his/her TV viewing experience with minimal interruption as the temporarily interrupted flow of subtitles resumes in synchronization with the actual audio/video content of the broadcast program. In sum, the user will simultaneously view previous non-synchronized subtitles and the ongoing audio/video content until the synchronized subtitles are resumed.
The present invention also provides that the user configures a list of keywords. According to the invention, the subtitles being retrieved are processed as searchable metadata records and the user can define keywords to be searched such that only the subtitle elements matching at least one keyword in a list of keywords as determined by the user are presented on the screen. Therefore, only the individual subtitle lines containing a certain keyword being presented to the user, the core information needed is deliverable much quicker.
TV channels with a focus on certain genres such as stock markets or sporting events may for example continuously broadcast subtitles. Therefore, the user may try to locate a specific piece of information in the subtitles. The desired information may include anything like weather forecast data, road traffic data, sporting events results or stock market data. In this case, instead of rewinding the subtitles, the user can better define a search keyword to reach a subtitle line he/she missed.
As a practical example, subtitles containing real-time scores of sport events can contain certain keywords; for example, upon searching for the name of a football team in the subtitles as a keyword inputted by the user, the image display device will show the individual subtitle line containing the name of the football team so that the user will be notified of the most recent score.
Therefore, the invention ensures that the subtitles as provided by the broadcast service provider can be rewound and fast forwarded and that the user can search for specific keywords in the subtitles. If the user conducts a keyword search, the subtitles are shown in a filtered manner, that is, only subtitle elements matching predefined keywords as found in the source metadata files are shown.
In accordance with the invention, the image display devices having Internet connectivity may also alternatively retrieve subtitles of the program from a remote source or database and process the retrieved subtitles similarly as delineated above. The user can activate the subtitle rewinding or fast forwarding function by pressing a function confirmation button of a remote control anytime he/she desires so.
TV broadcast service providers also generally provide more than one subtitle set in different languages in association with a program content such as a movie. Users can therefore select a preferred subtitle language when viewing a movie or switch between subtitles during a movie.
The present invention also provides that, in case more than one subtitle set is available in different languages, the user can, when manually rewinding subtitles to a missed subtitle line, optionally view the corresponding subtitle element containing the missed line additionally in a second language other than the primary subtitle viewing language being selected.
It is to be noted that a user may need to view a previous subtitle line not only because he/she was unable to read a part thereof but also because he/she just needs to review an appropriately viewed but non-understood passage. If this passage reveals to be highly important in respect of the program content being viewed, the user may attempt to view that part in the subtitles having the alternative second language. Therefore, the present invention provides that the manually viewed subtitle element is simultaneously displayed on the screen together with the corresponding subtitle element in the second language.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes An image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and comprising a control unit effecting operation of said image display device, characterized in that said control unit is configured to decode a broadcast TV program being received, to extract subtitle content of the program on a channel from a transport stream thereof and to display individual subtitle elements of the subtitle content in association with the broadcast TV program in a manner to be rewound or fast forwarded independent of the time-dependant flow of the subtitle content in association with said broadcast TV program.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said control unit further performs the step of saving the extracted subtitle content on a memory medium
In a yet further embodiment of the present invention, said control unit further performs the step of temporarily stopping time-dependant flow of the subtitle content.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, the subtitle content is periodically checked to be received as updated by broadcast service providers.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, the subtitle content on said memory medium is periodically updated.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, the temporarily interrupted flow of subtitles resumes in synchronization with actual audio/video content of the broadcast TV program.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, the subtitle content is processed as searchable metadata records.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, user-definable keywords are searchable in said subtitle content such that only individual subtitle elements of the subtitle content matching at least one keyword in a list of keywords are presented on the screen.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, the individual subtitle elements of the subtitle content being changeable forward and backward independent of the actual broadcast TV program are simultaneously displayed together with a corresponding subtitle element in a second language on the screen.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, said control unit further performs the step of receiving the subtitle content of the broadcast TV program from a remote source via a network connection.
In this regard, the present invention ensures that an image display device is operable to selectively display subtitles to be viewed in the manner to be changeable backward and forward. Users can therefore reach and manually browse previous subtitles in order for checking a missed entry. The main advantage of the invention therefore lies in that the user is made able to retrieve the desired information. In the meantime, users can continue their TV viewing experience with minimal disturbance as the temporarily interrupted flow of subtitles will resume in synchronization with the actual audio/video content of the broadcast program.
Further, the users can also define keywords to easily locate a previous record instead of manually rewinding all the way back, which is particularly advantageous in the case a genre-specific channel such as a stock market channel is viewed.
