- the power supply (17) of the transmitting unit are energy sources, including electrical energy transmission systems, energy storage devices such as a batteries and fuel cells, electromechanical systems such as generators and alternators, solar power converters, or another power supply (17).
- a power supplies have a power input, which connects to the energy source, and a power output that connects to the load. In many power supplies the power input and output consist of electrical connectors. Some power supplies have other types of inputs and outputs as well, for functions such as external monitoring and control.
- a GPS unit (12) or location receiver calculates its position by precisely timing the signals sent by GPS satellites high above the Earth. Each satellite continually transmits messages that include the time the message was transmitted and satellite position at time of message transmission. Further, the location receiver may also use a local positioning system (LPS), the LPS navigation system that provides location information in all weather, anywhere within the coverage of the network, where there is an unobstructed line of sight to three or more signaling beacons of which the exact position on earth is known.
- LPS local positioning system
- a special type of LPS is the Real-time locating system; which also allows real-time tracking of an object or person in a confined area such as a building. Unlike GPS or other global navigation satellite systems, local positioning systems don't provide global coverage.
- beacons which have a limited range, hence requiring the user to be near these.
- Beacons include cellular base stations, Wi-Fi access points, and radio broadcast towers.
- GSM Global System for Mobile Communications
- the GSM standard also provides separate facilities for transmitting digital data. This allows a mobile phone to act like any other computer (24) on the Internet, sending and receiving data via the Internet Protocol.
- the mobile may also be connected to a desktop computer (24), laptop, or PDA, for use as a network interface (just like a modem or Ethernet card, but using one of the GSM data protocols described below instead of a PSTN-compatible audio channel or an Ethernet link to transmit data).
- Some GSM unit (9) can also be controlled by a standardised Hayes AT command set through a serial cable or a wireless link (using IRDA or Bluetooth). The AT commands can control anything from ring tones to data compression algorithms. In addition to general Internet access, other special services may be provided by the device operator, such as SMS.
