Abstract

The invention relates to a method for assessing the performance of an encoded and modulated serial digital transmission over a noisy channel with non-stationary attenuation, wherein at least one value representing an error rate ER of the received bit stream is produced without decoding. A mutual information value Ik is produced (34) according to a predetermined transmission quality function Qk, and the average mutual information <In > is produced (35) for every encoded word received; then at least one error rate ER value of the received bit stream is produced (38) according to each average mutual information <In > value using a predetermined standard function on a channel with added white Gaussian noise. Said invention includes a device, a software product and a recording medium for the implementation of the method.
