Description

An anal probe and a complementary connector
The invention relates to a kit comprising an anal probe and a connector sized to fit the connector part of the anal probe.
Background
Anal irrigation is one of a number of treatments used to aid people with bowel problems. People suffering from bowel problems are often paralyzed, typically due to spinal cord injuries, and confined to a wheelchair or hospitalized. In these situations, the peristaltic functions, i.e. the reflexes and muscles of the bowel, often cannot be stimulated correctly. This results in constipation or random discharge of bowel contents. By using anal irrigation, a stimulation of the peristaltic movements of the colon can be provided.
To perform such anal irrigation a device comprising an anal probe, also called anal catheter or speculum, is provided. The anal probe is inserted into the rectum through the anus. The anal probe is typically retained in the rectum by retention means, most commonly a balloon, which is inflated against the wall of the rectum. A liquid, such as water or a saline solution is then introduced into the rectum through the anal probe. The amount of liquid is generally below 1.5 litres, depending on the person. The liquid is contained in a reservoir prior to use. The reservoir may be in the form of, for example, a canister or a reservoir bag.
The catheter may be provided with a connector for connecting the catheter to the tubing. Summary of the Invention
The invention relates to an anal probe and a connector for connecting the anal probe to tubing. The connector and the connector part of the anal probe have complementary size and shape in the outer configuration so that the connector functions as an outer extension of the anal probe. Thereby the user has a longer tube to hold and control the anal probe. Furthermore, there will be no outstanding ridges between the probe and the connector that could function as a catch for faeces or other output from the rectum. This provides for a more hygienic probe.
Detailed Description of the Invention
In a first aspect, the invention relates to a kit comprising
- an anal probe for use in connection with anal irrigations the probe having a proximal tip end and a distal connector end
- the connector end being provided with a connector part
a connector adapted for connecting the anal probe to a tubing system
- where the outer contour of the connector matches the outer contour of the connector part so that when the connector is connected to the anal probe, the connector provides an extension of the anal probe.
The connector functions as an extension of the anal probe thereby making it easier to hold and control the probe for the user. Furthermore, there will be substantially no transition between the probe and the connector. At least there will be no protruding flanges that may serve as a catch or collector for faeces passing out of the rectum. The omission of any protruding flanges will thus provide a more hygienic probe.
The connector is sized to fit the connector part of the anal probe. Thereby when the two parts (the probe and the connector) are connected, the outer contour of the connector matches the outer contour of the connector part of the anal probe. In other words, the circumference of the connector matches the circumference of the connector part of the anal probe.
Furthermore, the surface of the connector corresponds to the surface of the connector part of the probe so that the dimensions in the transverse directions of the connector are the same as the dimensions in the transverse directions of the connector part of the probe, when the two parts are connected.
The anal probe has a tip part and a connector part and there between a cylindrical body. The cylindrical body has a size of about 8-16 mm as the diameter such as 10 mm and a length of about 70-200 mm such as about 150 mm. The cylindrical body defines a longitudinal direction of the probe extending from the connector part towards the tip part. The anal probe is typically provided with a coating on the outer surface to make insertion easier. Furthermore, the probe is typically provided with retention means on the outer surface, for example in the form of a balloon. The tip part is provided with eyelets for letting liquid out of the probe. The connector part is provided with two through-going channels. The probe also includes two channels, an air channel extending from the connector part to the surface of the probe under the balloon and a liquid channel extending from the connector part to the tip part to communicate with the eyelets. Thereby air entering into the probe through the connector can flow through the air-channel to inflate the balloon. Likewise liquid entering into the probe through the connector can flow through the liquid channel to exit the probe through the eyelets and thus irrigate the bowel system.
The connector includes means for attaching tubing to the connector. The tubing is typically attached such that it cannot readily be detached, for example by gluing, welding or the like. In the other end, the connector includes means for detachably attaching it to the connector part of the anal probe. These means may be in the form of a thread connection, a snap connection, a bayonet fitting or similar well-known connections. The connector part of the anal probe includes complementary attaching means. The longitudinal direction of the connector is defined as extending from the tubing towards the means for attaching the connector to the probe. In other words, when the connector is connected to the anal probe the longitudinal direction of the probe and the connector coincide.
The connector connects to the probe in a connecting direction coinciding with the longitudinal direction. So the connector has been moved in the connecting direction between the position of the connector with respect to the probe prior to connection and the connected position.
In an embodiment of the invention, the connection between the connector and the anal probe is defined by connecting surfaces in contact with each other when the connector is connected to the anal probe and where these surfaces are provided with means for preventing overturning of the connector. The connecting surfaces extend transversely to the longitudinal direction of the probe. When the two parts (the connector and the probe) are connected, the connecting surfaces are in close contact with each other so that faeces are substantially prevented from entering in between the surfaces. Means for preventing overturning provides a well-defined stop so that it is easy for the user to know, when the connector is in the right position with respect to the probe. The connection position is defined as the position where the connecting surfaces are in contact with each other and where the connector is an extension of the connector end of the probe.
In a related embodiment, the means comprises a groove in one of the connecting surfaces and a protrusion in the other connecting surface. To provide a well-defined stop for the turning of the connector, the groove may be provided with a stop surface extending in the connecting direction. Likewise the protrusion may be provided with a
complementary stopping surface. Thereby, the connector and the probe may be turned with respect to each other until the stop surface of the protrusion meats the stop surface of the groove.
In one embodiment of the invention, the anal probe has a generally oval shape at the connector part. In this case the connector also has a generally oval shape. The oval shape is particularly useful as the anal probe has two channels - an air channel and a liquid channel as described above. The oval shape also makes the connector easier to hold because it fits better in the hand. The connector part is thus defined as the part of the anal probe where the circumference increases beyond the general cylindrical body part. The connector part of the probe and the connector may be oval such that the smaller diameter is approximately 80 percent of the largest diameter. For example, the largest diameter of the connector and the connector part of the probe may be approximately 20 mm and the smaller diameter may be approximately 15.5 mm.
The typical length of the connector in the longitudinal direction is approximately 25 mm. However, the connector may also be 50 mm or even longer in the longitudinal direction. A connector of this length may be an advantage when the connector is used as an extra extended hold for the probe.
The connector may be provided with protruding ridges, providing a finger-grip at the connector. Furthermore, the connector part of the anal probe may be provided with similar protruding ridges. The finger-grips make the hold at the connector and connector part more secure.
Brief Description of the Drawing
Figure 1 illustrates an anal probe and a connector according to the invention. Figure 2 illustrates the same anal probe and connector seen from the side. Figure 3 illustrates a connector and an anal probe with retention means. Figures 4 and 5 illustrate the connector and anal probe when separated.
Detailed Description of the Drawing
In figure 1 a kit 1 comprising an anal probe 2 and a connector 3 is shown. The probe 2 has a connector part 4 and a tip part 5. The eyelets 6 at the tip part are shown. The connector 3 is shown connected to the probe 2. It appears from the figure that the connector 3 and the connector part 4 have matching outer contour so that the connector 3 functions as an extension of the connector part 4.
In figure 2 the same kit 1 is seen from the side. Figure 3 and 4 illustrate the connector 3 and connector part 4 of the probe when separated. The outer oval contour 10 of the connector and the matching oval contour 11 of the connector part can be seen. Furthermore, figures 4 and 5 illustrate the means for preventing overturning. In figure 3 grooves 12, 13 are shown in the connecting surface 14 of the connector 3 and figure 4 illustrates protrusions 15, 16 in the connecting surface 17 of the connector part 4 of the probe. The grooves 12, 13 are provided with a stop surface 12a, 13a likewise the protrusions 15, 16 are also provided with a stop surface 15a, 16a.
The ends 12b, 13b of the grooves 12, 13 opposite the stop surfaces 12a, 13a, are shallow compared to the end of the grooves at the stop surfaces. Thereby they fit with the rounded surfaces 15b, 16b of the protrusions 15, 16. Figure 5 shows a kit 20 including retention means 21 in form of a balloon.
