Abstract
Hair care composition comprising HASE suspending agent or an ASE suspending agent, a particulate opacifier, characterized by PEG cocopolyamine or a cationic copolymer which is a copolymer of an aromatic heterocyclic and a vinyl pyrrolidone, and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride).
Description
COMPOSITION
The present invention relates to hair care compositions with improved aesthetics and functionality.
EP-A-1 661 975 (L'Oreal) discloses a liquid cleansing composition comprising at least one anionic surfactant, at least one electrolyte, at least one crosslinked copolymer of methacrylic acid and C1-C4 alkyl acrylate, wherein the total amount of surfactant by weight of active material being greater than 5% wt, with a disclaimer to a specific formulation.
WO 01/76552 (Noveon) discloses formulations comprising acrylate copolymers and pearlescers.
Despite the prior art there remains the need for a hair care composition with improved aesthetics in combination with good conditioning efficacy. Alkali- swellable emulsion polymers such as Carbopol Aqua SF1 from Lubhzol are known to reduce deposition of conditioning actives during use. Accordingly, this makes them unsuitable as suspending agents in compositions designed for conditioning benefits.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a hair care composition comprising HASE suspending agent or an ASE suspending agent, a particulate opacifier, characterized by PEG cocopolyamine or a cationic copolymer which is a copolymer of an aromatic heterocyclic and a vinyl pyrrolidone, and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride).
An ASE suspending agent is an alkyli-swellable emulsion and a HASE is a hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsion.
Surprisingly, the compositions according to the invention provide suitably attractive compositions which are also able to deliver conditioning benefits.
Preferably, the hair care composition comprises less than 5% wt. silicone, more preferably less than 2% wt. silicone. Most preferably, the composition comprises no silicone.
Preferably, the HASE suspending agent is a crosslinked copolymer of methacrylic acid and C1-C4 alkyl acrylate.
Preferably, the HASE suspending agent is a crosslinked copolymer of methacrylic acid and of a C1 -C4 alkyl acrylate.
Preferably, the methacrylic acid is present in the copolymer at from 20 to 80% wt. of the copolymer, preferably from 25 to 70% wt. and most preferably from 35 to 65% wt. of the copolymer.

Preferably, the alkyl acrylate is selected from methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate or mixtures thereof.
Preferably, the copolymer is partially or completely crosslinked with at least one standard ethylenically polyunsaturated crosslinker.
Preferably the hydrophobic modification of the HASE suspending agent takes the form of C10-C30 alkyl moieties covalently bound to the acrylic polymer backbone. More preferably these hydrophobic moieties are separated from the acrylic
polymer backbone by a polyethylene oxide linker. Most preferably the hydrophobic modification takes the form of beheneth-25 groups.
Preferably, the HASE suspending agent is present at from 0.1 % to 1.5% by weight of the composition.
Suitable HASE suspending agents include Carobopol Aqua SF1® commercially available from Lubrizol.
Preferably, the ASE suspending agent is a crosslinked copolymer of methacrylic acid and C1-C4 alkyl acrylate.
Preferably, the methacrylic acid is present in the copolymer at from 20 to 80% wt. of the copolymer, preferably from 25 to 70% wt. and most preferably from 35 to 65% wt. of the copolymer.
Preferably, the alkyl acrylate is present in the copolymer at from 25 to 70% wt. and most preferably from 35 to 65% wt. of the copolymer.
Preferably, the alkyl acrylate is selected from methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate or mixtures thereof.
Preferably, the copolymer is partially or completely crosslinked with at least one standard ethylenically polyunsaturated crosslinker.
Preferably, the ASE suspending agent is present at from 0.1 % to 1.5% by weight of the composition.
Suitable ASE suspending agents include Aculyn 38® commercially available from Rohm and Haas.
- A -
The cationic copolymer is a copolymer of an aromatic heterocyclic and a vinyl pyrrolidone, and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride).
Preferably, the cationic copolymer has a charge density of from 4.5 to 7 meq/g measured at 5.5 pH.
Preferably, the cationic copolymer has a molecular weight of from 80 to 500 kDa, more preferably from 100 to 200 kDa.
Preferably, the aromatic heterocyclic is vinyl imidazole.
Most preferably, the cationic copolymer is Polyquaternium-87 commercially available from BASF as Luviquat Sensation®.
The cationic copolymer is present in the composition at from 0.01 % to 1 % by weight of the composition.
Preferably, the PEG cocopolyamine is PEG-15 cocopolyamine. PEG-15 cocopolyamine is commercially available from Cognis as Dehyquart H81®.
Preferably, the PEG copolyamine is present at from 0.01 % to 1 % by weight of the composition.
Preferably, the opacifier is present at from 0.01 % to 1 % by weight of the composition.
Preferably, the particulate opacifier is mica.
Preferably, the hair care composition is a shampoo. Preferably, the shampoo comprises from 5 to 70% wt. cleansing surfactant.
Preferably, the composition comprises from 5 to 65% wt. anionic surfactant.
The composition according to the invention may comprise any of a number of ingredients which are commonly found in hair care compositions. For example, cleansing surfactants, conditioning surfactants, cationic deposition polymers, styling agents, colouring agents, etc.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the following non-limiting examples.
EXAMPLE 1
The following example shows how certain ingredients can provide improved conditioning benefit (shown through hair smoothness) despite the absence of silicone and in the presence of a HAS or ASE suspending agent.
Rank Sum is the total of the 12 rank values given to the treatment. Mean Rank is the average rank value given to the treatment.
Polyquaternium 87 is ranked significantly smoother than Softcat xr400s, Basewashed hair, Polymer LK and Current Shine prototype.
And Dehyquart H81 is ranked significantly smoother than Polymer LK and Current Shine prototype.
Accordingly, the data shows that Polyquaternium 87 and Dehyquart H81 provide improved conditioning efficacy in the presence of an ASE or HASE suspending agent and in the absence of silicone.
EXAMPLE 2
The following is a shampoo formulation.
In a main batch add the water and the SF1 and mix together. Then add the SLES (25% aq). Adjust pH to 6.5 using NaOH. Add the cocamidopropylbetaine and mix until homogenous. Separately, heat up sufficient water and add the PQ 87 and mix. Pour this into the main batch and use 5g water to wash out the beaker. Then add the mica, fragrance and preservatives. Then thicken with salt. The pH is then adjusted to 5.5 (this is important for stability reasons - the final formulation needs to be between 5.2-5.5).
