Description
VEHICLE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM AND METHOD USING
LICENSE PLATE
Technical Field
[1] The present invention relates, in general, to a vehicle anti-theft system and method using a license plate, and, more particularly, to a vehicle anti-theft system and method using a license plate, which actively determine whether the theft of a vehicle or a license plate has been attempted or has occurred by overcoming the limitations of conventional passive anti-theft systems, and notify a vehicle owner or a government office (for example, a police station) of the occurrence of a theft when a case of theft occurs, and which additionally provide a tax nonpayment management function, a Hi-pass (electronic toll collection) card function, an access card function, etc., thus allowing the vehicle owner to enjoy a more convenient life. Background Art
[2] Recently, with the development of technologies in the electric, electronic and mechanical fields, vehicle technology has become highly developed. Because of this developed vehicle technology, luxury vehicles have been developed and marketed, and the prices thereof have also increased.
[3] Such a luxury vehicle is recognized as an important part of the financial worth of a vehicle owner, and thus the number of vehicle thefts is on an increasing trend.
[4] Currently, as schemes used for vehicle anti-theft systems, there are only passive schemes for providing a warning sound when a third party attempts to unlawfully open the door of a vehicle from outside of the vehicle or attempts to start the vehicle using illegal means other than using the proper ignition key in the state in which a vehicle owner has locked the door of the vehicle. Accordingly, theft methods have developed to such an extent as to be able to incapacitate current vehicle anti-theft systems.
[5] Further, in order to prevent a vehicle from being stolen or being used for crimes and to prevent illegal behavior, such as illegal forgery or falsification of the license plate of a vehicle, and illegal replacement or installation of a license plate, the license plate is attached to the rear of a vehicle, and is then sealed using a separate seal cap approved by a government office.
[6] According to the Automobile Management Act in Korea, a seal provided in such a seal cap cannot be detached in all cases except for the case where permission is granted by the governor of a city or a province or the case where specific regulations are applied. When a seal is detached or cannot be recognized, it must be applied for again.
[7] A vehicle, the license plate of which is not sealed, cannot be operated. When the seal of a relevant license plate is withdrawn, the license plate cannot be used again. In current situations, when a person drives a vehicle with a seal detached from the vehicle, a penalty fine is imposed.
[8] This is intended to prevent a vehicle from being stolen or being used for crimes by prohibiting the license plate of the vehicle from being arbitrarily transferred to various other vehicles. However, there is a problem in that it is difficult to regulate vehicles, having no seals or having damaged seals, and license plates can be easily forged or falsified.
Disclosure of Invention Technical Problem
[9] Accordingly, the present invention has been made keeping in mind the above problems occurring in the prior art, and an object of the present invention is to provide a vehicle anti-theft system and method using a license plate, which overcome the limitations of conventional passive anti-theft systems, and adopt an active scheme, such as by actively determining whether the theft of a vehicle or a license plate has been attempted or has occurred and by notifying a vehicle owner or a government office (for example, a police station) of the occurrence of a theft when a case of theft occurs.
[10] Another object of the present invention is to provide a vehicle anti-theft system and method using a license plate, which additionally provide a tax nonpayment management function, a Hi-pass (electronic toll collection) card function, an access card function, etc. by inputting various types of data to a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag, which is attached to a vehicle, is implemented using a small semiconductor chip, is formed in the shape of a thin metal film or other shapes, and is configured to transmit and process information, thus allowing a vehicle owner to enjoy a more convenient life. Technical Solution
[11] In accordance with an aspect of the present invention to accomplish the above objects, there is provided a vehicle anti-theft system using a license plate, comprising a license plate Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag attachable to a front or rear license plate of a vehicle, a window attachment RFID tag attachable to a front window, a rear window or a side window of the vehicle, an input unit configured to input data both to the license plate RFID tag and to the window attachment RFID tag, a Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface unit configured to enable data input from an external device connected through a USB interface to be stored in the license plate RFID tag and the window attachment RFID tag, and a control unit configured to transmit theft occurrence information to a government office or a communication terminal of a vehicle owner when the license plate RFID tag or the window attachment RFID tag is damaged or removed.
[12] Preferably, the vehicle anti-theft system may further comprise a plurality of readers installed on a road along which the vehicle is traveling, and configured to notify the government office of occurrence of a theft when a theft occurrence signal, including both information about whether a theft has occurred and information about the vehicle, is received from the control unit over a wireless network.
[13] Preferably, the control unit may be configured such that, if tax related information related to a type of taxes and a date of tax payment is stored in the license plate RFID tag and the window attachment RFID tag, the control unit notifies the vehicle owner of the tax related information in accordance with the tax type and the tax payment date, such that, if Hi-pass information is stored therein, the control unit automatically processes payment of a toll when the vehicle owner enters or leaves a toll gate of an expressway while driving the vehicle, and such that, if access card information is stored therein, the control unit processes an access card function when the vehicle enters a predetermined area.
[14] Preferably, the control unit may receive a password for the vehicle owner after a unique number assigned to the license plate by a vehicle registration office has been input, thus preventing a third party other than the vehicle owner from managing the license plate.

[23] Hereinafter, a vehicle anti-theft system and method using a license plate according to embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings.
[24] It should be noted that the same reference numerals are used throughout the different drawings to designate the same or similar components. In the following description of the present invention, detailed descriptions may be omitted if it is determined that the detailed descriptions of related well-known functions and construction may make the gist of the present invention unclear.
[25] FIG. 1 is a diagram showing a road system applied to the present invention. As shown in the drawing, readers 100 capable of receiving signals from a vehicle 200, to which the vehicle anti-theft system according to the present invention is applied, are installed at regular intervals on a road (including a national road or an expressway) along which the vehicle 200 is traveling. For example, in the case of a national road, the readers 100 are installed at intervals of predetermined distance, and, in the case of an expressway, the readers 100 are installed at respective toll gates. Such a reader 100 is capable of communicating with the vehicle 200 using various wireless communication methods, and notifies a government office of the occurrence of the theft of the vehicle 200 when a signal, that is, a theft occurrence signal, has been received from a controller provided in the vehicle 200.
[26] FIG. 2 is a block diagram showing a vehicle anti-theft system (controller) using a license plate according to the present invention. Referring to FIG. 2, the vehicle anti- theft system according to the present invention includes a license plate Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag 330, a window attachment RFID tag 340, a generation unit 350, a Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface unit 320, and a control unit 360. The license plate RFID tag is attachable to the front or rear license plate of the vehicle 200. The window attachment RFID tag 340 is attachable to the front, rear or side of the vehicle 200. The generation unit 350 transmits information about whether an abnormality has occurred on the vehicle, for example, theft occurrence information, to the communication terminal of a vehicle owner (for example, a mobile phone or the like). The USB interface unit 320 enables data (information) to be directly input both to the license plate RFID tag 330 and to the window attachment RFID tag 340, and enables data to be externally input both to the license plate RFID tag 330 and to the window attachment RFID tag 340 through a USB interface.
[27] Data input to the license plate RFID tag 330 and the window attachment RFID tag
340 formed in the shape of an example shown in FIG. 3 may include vehicle information, such as personal information of the vehicle owner corresponding to the license plate and a vehicle identification number, and may also include other types of information, such as the specification of the vehicle 200, tax related information of the vehicle owner, Hi-pass information, and access card information.
[28] The input unit 310 may be implemented using a plurality of keys, and may enable data to be input both to the license plate RFID tag 330 and to the window attachment RFID tag 340, or may enable a password for the vehicle anti-theft system to be set.
[29] The USB interface unit 320 is connected to an external device, accessible through the
USB interface, and is configured to enable data to be input both to the license plate RFID tag 330 and to the window attachment RFID tag 340, and enable the password for the vehicle anti-theft system to be set.
[30] The generation unit 350 transmits theft occurrence information or information about the occurrence of an abnormality on the vehicle to the communication terminal of the vehicle owner over a wireless network (for example, a mobile communication network) under the control of the control unit 360.
[31] When the password set by the vehicle owner is input, the control unit 360 stores data, input through the input unit 310 or the USB interface unit 320, in the license plate RFID tag 330 and the window attachment RFID tag 340. When an input password is not identical to the stored password, the control unit 360 prevents data stored in the license plate RFID tag 330 and the window attachment RFID tag 340 from being changed. Further, when the license plate RFID tag 330 or the window attachment RFID tag 340 is haphazardly tampered with, that is, when the license plate is attached/ detached or the window of the vehicle is broken for an unlawful purpose, and then the license plate RFID tag 330 or the window attachment RFID tag 340 is damaged or removed, the control unit 360 determines that an abnormality has occurred on the vehicle 200 (the occurrence of a vehicle theft), and then notifies a government office of the occurrence of the vehicle theft by transmitting a theft occurrence signal to a relevant reader 100. At this time, the control unit 360 allows both information about whether a theft has occurred and information about the vehicle 200 to be included in the theft occurrence signal, thus enabling the government office to track the missing vehicle 200 and to easily arrest the thief of the vehicle. Furthermore, when the license plate RFID tag 330 or the window attachment RFID tag 340 is haphazardly tampered with, the control unit 360 transmits theft occurrence information to the communication terminal of the vehicle owner through the generation unit 350 in real time, thus allowing the vehicle owner to immediately notify a government office of the occurrence of a vehicle theft.
[32] Meanwhile, when tax related information, Hi-pass information, and access card information are stored in the license plate RFID tag 330 and the window attachment RFID tag 340, the control unit 360 enables a Hi-pass function to be automatically processed when the vehicle owner enters or leaves the toll gate of an expressway while driving the vehicle 200, enables an access card function to be processed when the vehicle enters a predetermined area (for example, the parking lot of an apartment), and notifies the vehicle owner of tax related information in accordance with, for example, the type of taxes and the date of tax payment, in order to prevent the vehicle owner from failing to pay taxes.
[33] FIG. 4 is a flowchart showing a vehicle anti-theft method according to the present invention. Referring to FIG. 4, vehicle information, such as the personal information of a vehicle owner corresponding to a license plate, and a vehicle identification number, may be input to the license plate RFID tag 330 and the window attachment RFID tag 340, and other types of information, such as the specification of the vehicle 200, tax related information of the vehicle owner, Hi-pass information, and access card in- formation, are input thereto at step SlOO.
[34] Data input to the license plate RFID tag 330 and the window attachment RFID tag
340 may be externally input through the input unit 310 or the USB interface unit 320. Further, after a unique number assigned to a vehicle license plate by a vehicle registration office has been input, the password of a vehicle owner is input, thus preventing the third party other than the vehicle owner from managing the vehicle license plate. Further, even if the original license plate is arbitrarily replaced with another license plate by a vehicle thief or the vehicle owner, notification of whether an abnormality has occurred on the vehicle can be provided to the vehicle owner or the government office by confirming inconsistency between set unique numbers.
[35] Further, the control unit 360 determines whether the license plate has been attached/ detached or whether the window of the vehicle has been broken, for an unlawful purpose, at step SI lO.
[36] If it is determined that the license plate RFID tag 330 or the window attachment
RFID tag 340 has been damaged or removed, the control unit 360 transmits theft occurrence information to the communication terminal of the vehicle owner in real time at step S 120.
[37] Meanwhile, when the license plate RFID tag 330 or the window attachment RFID tag
340 is damaged or removed, the control unit 360 transmits a theft occurrence signal, including both information about whether a theft has occurred and information about the vehicle 200, to a corresponding reader 100. The reader 100 transmits the theft occurrence information to the government office at step S 130.
[38] Notification of tax related information, stored in the license plate RFID tag 330 and the window attachment RFID tag 340, is provided to the vehicle owner in accordance with, for example, the type of taxes and the date of tax payment, thus preventing the vehicle owner from failing to pay taxes. When the Hi-pass information and the access card information are stored, the control unit allows a Hi-pass function to be automatically processed when the vehicle owner enters or leaves the toll gate of an expressway while driving the vehicle 200, and enables an access card function to be processed when the vehicle enters a predetermined area (for example, the parking lot of an apartment). Industrial Applicability
[39] As described above, a vehicle anti-theft system and method using a license plate according to the present invention are advantageous in that they can actively determine whether the theft of a vehicle has been attempted or has occurred and can notify a vehicle owner or a government office (for example, a police station) of the occurrence of a theft when a case of theft occurs, and in that they can additionally provide a tax nonpayment management function, a Hi-pass (electronic toll collection) card function, an access card function, etc. by inputting various types of data to an RFID tag attached to a vehicle, thus providing various types of functions to the vehicle owner. [40] Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been disclosed for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications, additions and substitutions are possible, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims.
