Description
Digital data exchange
The present invention relates to a procedure for transmission and/or receiving of digital picture data and/or digital data of acoustic signals in a mobile radio network, especially according to a radio network standard of GSM, GPRS and/or UMTS, via a communication service of the mobile radio network.
The present invention further relates to a digital picture frame, having a display unit for displaying digital picture data, at least one storage unit for storage of digital picture data, a control unit for controlling the displaying of digital picture data from the storage unit on the display unit and a control input unit for detection of inputs to control functions of the control unit, which is eguipped and/or adapted to perform at least partially a procedure according to the present invention.
In the state of the art numerous embodiments of digital picture frames for displaying digital picture data, especially so called digital photography's, are known, especially from the above mentioned GB 2 406 991 A.
The penetration of digital picture frames amongst consumers is increasing each year. Other than storing the pictures on the PC or printing them, users have limited options to share their pictures with their friends and family. Current digital picture frames that are on the market can only display new pictures if the pictures are uploaded locally for example via USB or memory cards such as compact flash cards. Disadvantageous with the present known digital picture frames are the efforts to bring in and also to display digital picture data, especially concerning the so far given operation of the digital picture frames, which deter especially older and untrained persons from using corresponding digital picture frames. Hitherto digital picture data have to be brought in to digital picture frames by changing a replaceable storage medium of the digital picture frame or by connecting the digital picture frame with such storage medium.
Based upon this state of the art, it is an object of the invention to improve a digital picture frame in particular in view of the handling and operation, preventing the described disadvantages. Thereby especially simplify the transmission and/or bring in of digital picture data to the digital picture frame.
To achieve the above mentioned objects, the present invention proposes a digital picture frame, having a display unit for displaying digital picture data, at least one storage unit for storage of digital picture data, a control unit for controlling the displaying of digital picture data from the at least one storage unit on the display unit and a control input unit for detection of inputs to control functions of the control unit which is characterized by a receiver unit, which is operate-able in a mobile radio network, especially according to a radio network standard of GSM, GPRS and/or UMTS, for receiving digital picture data via at least one communication service of the mobile radio network.
Further advantageous embodiments of the present invention are characterised in the claims.
Thus the invention proposes a wireless digital picture frame hardware with embedded SIM, a high-resolution display, a GSM, GPRS and/or UMTS module, internal speaker, internal memory to support at least 30 pictures in flash memory, operating system to provide user friendly menu structure, OTA update capability, software support, specifically for SMS and/or MMS, and/or a server that hosts digital pictures and handles delivery to the picture frame. The system of the present invention is advantageously interconnected with the existing SMS and/or SMS infrastructure of the mobile network (mobile radio network) and features advantageously a web-front-end were the user can manage the pictures.
Advantageously the present digital picture frame of the present invention supports a wireless connection in order to deliver a solution that is easy to use, up to date and interactive. Further it gives an implementation of the digital picture frame with an embedded SIM and GSM, GPRS and/or UMTS support. Pictures are uploaded remotely.
The main advantage of the proposed solution is that users do not need to access the picture frame physically to share and/or upload new pictures. The digital picture frame can be put into a remote location, for example the house of grandmother. The OTA upload of the pictures during the night saves network
resources since it takes place during an off-peak period of the mobile radio network. The user of the picture frame does not need any additional IT equipment to operate the picture frame, as it is necessary for example in the case of a WI-FI powered picture frame, for which the user would also need a broadband internet connection, such as DSL, and a computer. The web-interface of the present invention to upload pictures to the digital picture frame offers the maximum in ease of use since all the pictures are in a preferred embodiment of the invention automatically organised, re-sizes and/or transcoded so that they can be displayed on the digital picture frame in an optimal manner. Storing, managing and deleting pictures remotely become truly easy.
The invention will help users to deliver digital pictures to friends and family thanks to the mobile network and a SIM powered digital picture frame. The service can advantageously be administrated via a dedicated website, thereby advantageously using the protocol for data transmission between the mobile network and the receiver unit of the digital picture frame according the present invention. Furthermore, mobile subscribers can send MMS and SMS messages directly to the picture frame thanks to a dedicated phone number of the digital picture frame. In the GSM, GPRS and/or UMTS data connection capable picture frame, the provider of the mobile network can embed a SIM card. The hardware supports high resolution pictures, text content, MMS slideshows (SMIL) and video clips. The sound is played back thanks to an internal speaker in the picture frame. The pictures are brought the digital picture frame over the air periodically, especially once per day. The off-peak time of the mobile network, for example during the night, is leveraged to update the picture set on the picture frame. Additional premium content can be pushed by the mobile operator onto the digital picture frame, for example news, local information, whether forecast, and the like content.
To achieve the above mentioned objects, the present invention further proposes a procedure for transmission and/or receiving of digital picture data and/or digital data of acoustic signals in a mobile radio network (mobile network), especially according to a radio network standard of GSM, GPRS and/or UMTS, via at least one communication service of the mobile radio network to a receiver unit which is operate-able in the mobile radio network, characterised by using a synchronisation protocol for transmission and/or receiving according the present invention. Advantageously the receiver unit is the receiver unit of a digital picture frame according the present invention.
Further advantageous embodiments of the present invention are characterised in the claims.
The various objects, features and/or advantages of the present invention will be more readily understood from the following detailed description when read in conjunction with the appended drawings.
The present invention further broadly relates to a procedure for transmission and/or receiving of digital picture data and/or digital data of acoustic signals in a mobile radio network, especially according to a radio network standard of GSM, GPRS and/or UMTS, via at least one communication service of the mobile radio network to a receiver unit which is operate-able in the mobile radio network, characterised by using a synchronisation protocol for transmission and/or receiving according the specification disclosed with the present invention.
An advantageous embodiment of the present invention suggests, a Procedure for transmission and/or receiving of digital picture data, digital data of acoustic signals data and/or status information data in a mobile radio network, especially according to a radio network standard of GSM, GPRS and/or UMTS, via at least one communication service of the mobile radio network to a receiver unit (DPF) which is operate-able in the mobile radio network, characterised by a synchronisation of data between the receiver unit (DPF) and a service platform on part of the mobile radio network, comprising the following steps:
- initiating synchronisation interaction by sending a message (SMS) to the receiver unit (DPF) by a server of the service platform via a communication service of the mobile radio network, the message comprising information to address the server (server URL) and information to open the connection in the mobile radio network (APN for GPRS connection);
- establishing the connection by the receiver unit (DPF);
- sending a request to the server by the receiver unit (DPF), comprising status information about data on part of the receiver unit (DPF) and/or devices connected with the receiver unit (DPF);
- receiving the status information of the receiver unit (DPF) and/or devices connected with the receiver unit (DPF) on the server side;
- calculating storage space and/or places for data, especially for at least one new digital picture data and/or acoustic signals data, on side the server and use the calculated information as synchronization information, whereby the synchronization information comprise information to link at least one new digital picture data and/or acoustic signals data;
- sending the calculated synchronization information to the receiver unit (DPF) and
- downloading the linked at least one new digital picture data and/or acoustic signals data by the receiver unit (DPF).
Further details of the present invention, especially concerning the protocol for transmission of data are know explained with the protocol specification for sync operation:
1. Introduction
Below the communication between the digital picture frame (DPF) and the synchronisation server in the mobile network is specified.
Main use case is the delivery of new picture from received MMS or the Website to the picture frame. But all other interactions e.g. firmware update are also included.
The detailed architecture of the network components are summarized under the term "DPF Service Platform".
2. Architecture overview
Fig. 1 illustrates the high level architecture of the Digital Picture Frame Service.
The connection between the network and the DPF uses two different bearers:
• SMS is used to trigger an interaction on the DPF
• On request (SMS) the DPF opens a GPRS connection (for a restricted access, the Corporate Data Access product of the provider of the mobile network is used).
All received MMS are not delivered to the DPF directly, but copied from the MMS-C to the DPF Service Platform, which controls the forward of the MMS content to the DPF.
3. Interactions
This section shows the different interactions in the form of sequence diagrams.
The used entities are:
• DPF Service Platform developed and operation by the provider of the mobile network
• Digital Picture Frame (DPF)
The communication uses the 2 bearers SMS and GPRS.
In the case of SMS, the messages are XML encoded directly in the text body of the SMS.
For GPRS connection, HTTP over IP is used as the transport protocol, where the XML encoded messages are exchanged. GET and POST operations are used.
3.1 Synchronization
This interaction (Fig. 2) describes how pictures and status information about the DPF are exchanged between the DPF Service Platform and the DPF.
1. The interaction is initiated from the server side by sending a SMS to the DPF. This SMS contains the req_sync message (XML encoded) including information about the server URL to use and APN needed to open the GPRS connection in that network. Fig. 2a shows an example of an XML Message for such synchronisation (SMS to request Sync).
2. After the DPF has established the GRPS connection, it sends a HTTP POST command to the server URL. In this request, the current status of the DPF pictures is included as XML encoded "status" message. Fig. 2b shows an example of an XML Message for such synchronisation (PF status send in HTTP POST).
3. With the current status information, the server side calculates, where new picture(s) are placed within the DPF and sends back the synchronization information as XML encoded "sync" message. Fig. 2c shows an example of an XML Message for such synchronisation (HTTP response with Sync info).
4. As the "sync" message includes only links to the JPEG encoded pictures, the DPF now downloads all new pictures in a loop by using simple HTTP GET requests to the server URL.
A sync interaction is initiated by the DPF Service Platform, if
• A MMS including a picture is received for the DPF (including sync of only 1 picture)
• A synchronization between the DPF and the user managed web site is performed (normally over night in off-peak times).
3.2 Firmware Update
A firmware update (Fig. 3) is initiated by the network side.
1. The server sends a XML encoded "req_fw_update" message within a SMS to the DPF.
2. With the APN parameter from the request, the DPF opens a GRPS connection.
3. A HTTP GET operation to the specified URL of the server is initiated.
4. The server sends back the new firmware binary file as response to the HTTP GET.
The complete management of when a firmware update needs to be done and the correct handling of different firmware versions is done within the DPF Service Platform. The DPF just reacts, when triggered by the server.
Information about the currently used firmware is part of the DPF status message used in the "sync" message.
3.3 Settings
This is an interaction (Fig. 4), where only a XML encoded "settings" message is send via SMS from the server side to the DPF.
4. XML Specifications
The following sections include DTD definitions of all XML messages. A DTD file is available and can be used to verify/check generated XML messages. It is not required to include references to the DTD in the messages but it should be accepted by each side.
4.1 Sync Request
Fig. 5 shows an example for the sync request.
"req sync" message contains an URL attribute, which defines the server URL for the following HTTP communication.
The APN definition is mandatory and defines how the GRPS connection can be established.
The "request_status" part requests status information for a range of picture slots on the DPF specified in the "from" and "to" fields. This elements is optional, but must be processed, if present.
4.2 Status
Fig. 6 shows an example for the status.
In the "status" message, information about the hardware (HW) and software (SW) version is send by the DPF.
If requested in the "req_sync" message, a slot element with status information is included for every requested slot. This status includes the slot number (nr), the status (see table below for defined stati) and the id of the picture, used to identify the picture on the server.
The following table defines the values used for the "status" attribute (used stati):
4.3 Sync Information
Fig. 7 shows an example for the synch information.
The "sync" message contains 2 types of elements:
• "move_slot" is used to move a picture from 1 slot to another and is only used, when the order of pictures is defined in the web-site (or via certain logic on the server side).
• "slot" is used to update existing slots with information from the server
o to delete an existing picture (status = deleted)
o to update a slot with a new picture (status = used or locked)
The DPF can assume, that the elements are in the correct sequential order to be processed (e.g. if a new image is inserted before slot nr 2, a "move slot" for slot nr 2 is given before the slot is updated with a new picture).
The "move_slot" element contains the slot nr (nr) and status of the effected slot and in addition the number of the slot from which to take the picture (and text) in the "from_slot" field.
The "from" and "received" elements contain optional meta information that are not evaluated by the DPF at the moment.
The "text" element contains a comment/text in addition to the image. The text is taken from the MMS or the web site depending on the source of the image. No special text formatting options are defined yet, but national characters must be supported.
The "image" element specifies the new picture. It contains a relative link to the jpeg file on the server.
4.4 Image download
The DPF can retrieve the jpeg file of an image with a HTTP GET concatenating the LJRL from the "sync req" with the relative link given in the "href attribute of the slot's "image" element.
The file format is JPEG and the resolution of the image is not greater than the DFP screen resolution to reduce data traffic. But the image can be smaller than the DPF resolution.
4.5 Firmware Update Request
Fig. 8 shows an example for a firmware update request.
This message only contains the URL, where the new firmware can be downloaded vial HTTP GET. For the GRPS connection, the APN information is also provided.
4.6 Firmware Download
Using the URL in the "req_fw_update" message in a HTTP GET, the new binary file can be downloaded from the DPF Service Platform. After successful download, the DPF should immediately check and install the new firmware.
The server will be informed about a successful update with the next status message (send during a sync operation) in the FW element.
4.8 Settings (example)
Fig. 9 shows an example for settings.
This message is currently a place holder for settings information, that can/must be set on the DPF, but are not supported by the frame's Ul or which are in addition to that available via remote configuration. As an example, the configuration of the slideshow delay time can be set remotely.
