[23] FIG. 2 shows a flowchart representing a controlling process of the display device according to the exemplary embodiment of the present invention.
[24]
Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
[25] Reference will now be made in detail to the embodiments of the present invention, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to like elements throughout. The embodiments are described below so as to explain the present invention by referring to the figures.
[26] FIG. 1 shows a control block diagram of a display device according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 1, the display device includes a signal receiving unit 10, a signal processing unit 20, a display unit 30, a user input unit 40, a user interface (UI) generating unit 50, a storage unit 70, and a controlling unit 60.
[27] The signal receiving unit 10 according to the exemplary embodiment of the present invention includes a tuning unit (not shown) for receiving a broadcast signal. Here, the tuning unit (not shown) includes one or more tuners, a demodulator and a decoder for demodulating a tuned signal, a decoder, and a multiplexer (MUX).
[28] In addition, the tuning unit tunes the broadcast signal having a frequency band corresponding to a tuning control signal of the controlling unit 60. The broadcast signal of a tuned channel is received in a transport stream type that is formed as a packet by time-division multiplexing a video signal, audio signal, and various data.
[29] For example, when a digital broadcast signal is received, the demodulator performs a vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation process and an error correction process for the received broadcast signal and outputs the broadcast signal in a transport stream type. In this case, the tuning unit (not shown) includes an analog tuner and a digital tuner, so that it may be used as a multi-tuning unit for receiving an analog broadcast signal and a digital broadcast signal.
[30] The signal processing unit 20 processes the broadcast signal input from the signal receiving unit 10 according to a control operation of the controlling unit 60 and provides the broadcast signal to the display unit 30 to display the broadcast signal.
[31] In addition, the signal processing unit 20 may include various functions corresponding to a format type of an input video signal. For example, an analog/digital (AJO) converting function for converting various input video signals into a digital video signal of a predetermined format, a digital decoding function, and scaling and format converting functions for receiving the digital video signal and/or the analog video signal and adjusting a vertical frequency, a resolution, and a screen aspect ratio according to an output size of the display unit 30.
[32] The display unit 30 displays the broadcast signal processed by the signal processing unit 20, and it may be formed as a digital light processor (DLP) device, a liquid crystal display (LCD), and a plasma display panel (PDP).
[33] The user input unit 40 inputs a selection signal of at least one broadcast method among a plurality of broadcast methods for transmitting the broadcast signal, and it may include a menu key provided on a remote controller or a case so as to input the selection signal, and a key signal generating unit for generating a key signal in response to a key operation. In addition, the user input unit 40 may further include number and direction keys for selecting a channel, and a function key for selecting a function of the display device.
[34] The UI generating unit 50 generates a broadcast method selecting menu for selecting at least one broadcast method by the control of the controlling unit 60, and it may be realized as an on screen display (OSD) generator. In addition, the UI generating unit 50 may be included in the signal processing unit 20 for processing the received broadcast signal.
[35] The storage unit 70 stores the selected broadcast method input from the user input unit, and it may be realized by an internal ROM, a flash memory, or an S-RAM. In addition, the storage unit 70 may store a default broadcast method, and the broadcast method decoded by the signal processing unit. The default broadcast method may be differently stored for each area.
[36] The controlling unit 60 receives the selected broadcast method, determines whether a received broadcast method is selected by a user, and processes the received broadcast signal. The controlling unit 60 may be realized by a central processing unit or a controller of a microcomputer (Micom).
[37] In further detail, when user input unit 40 selects the broadcast method selecting function for selecting the broadcast method, the controlling unit 60 controls the UI generating unit 50 to generate the broadcast method selecting menu for selecting at least one among the plurality of broadcast method.
[38] Here, the broadcast method includes a national television systems committee (NTSC) method, a phase alternation by line (PAL) method, a sequentiel couleur memoire (SECAM), and further includes an NTSC-M, a PAL-B, a PAL-D, a PAL-M, a PAL-N, a SECAM-L, and a SECAM-K. Accordingly, the broadcast method selecting menu generated by the UI generating unit 50 includes the above broadcast methods.
[39] When receiving the selection signal of at least one broadcast method in the broadcast method selecting menu from the user input unit 40, the controlling unit 60 may store the broadcast method in the storage unit 70.
[40] Here, the broadcast methods that may be received in a corresponding area are included in the broadcast method selecting menu by the control of the controlling unit 60, and therefore the user may select a receivable broadcast method.
[41] In addition, when receiving the broadcast signal, the controlling unit 60 determines the broadcast method of the received broadcast signal (hereinafter referred to as a received broadcast method ) by using the broadcast method to which the selection signal is input by the user input unit 40 (hereinafter referred to as a selected broadcast method ). Here, the controlling unit 60 may determine the broadcast method by using standard including the number of scan lines, a field frequency, and a color signal modulation method of the broadcast signal.
[42] That is, the controlling unit 60 compares the standard of the received broadcast signal and the standard of the selected broadcast method, and determines whether the received broadcast method is one of the selected broadcast methods. In addition, when the received broadcast method is one of the selected broadcast methods, the controlling unit 60 controls the signal processing unit 20 to process the broadcast signal by the selected broadcast method.
[43] When the received broadcast method is not one of the selected broadcast methods, the controlling unit 60 may not determine the received broadcast method. Accordingly, the controlling unit 60 controls the signal processing unit 20 so as to process the broadcast signal by the default broadcast method stored in the storage unit 70.
[44] For example, when it is assumed that the user input unit 40 selects the PAL-N, and
NTSC-M methods, the controlling unit 60 determines the number of scan lines of the received broadcast signal when receiving the broadcast signal. The number of scan lines is 625 in the PAL-N method, and 525 in the NTSC-M method, respectively. Accordingly, when the number of scan lines of the received broadcast signal is 525, the controlling unit 60 determines the broadcast method to be NTSC-M method and processes the broadcast signal by the NTSC-M method.
[45] After comparing the received broadcast method with the selected broadcast methods,
PAL-N and NTSC-M methods, and determined that the received broadcast method is not any one of the selected broadcast methods, the received broadcast signal is processed by the default broadcast method stored in the storage unit 70.
[46] Accordingly, since the user selects at least one broadcast method among the plurality of broadcast methods and the broadcast method of the received broadcast signal is compared to the selected broadcast methods, a time for determining the broadcast method is reduced. In addition, since a process for determining the broadcast method is simplified, a time for displaying the received broadcast signal may be reduced.
[47] In addition, an error caused during the process for determining the broadcast method may be reduced.
[48] The controlling method of the display device according to the exemplary embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. 2.
[49] As shown in FIG. 2, the controlling unit 60 controls the UI generating unit 50 to generate and display a broadcast method selecting menu for selecting at least one broadcast method among the plurality of broadcast methods at operation of Sl.
[50] When the user input unit 40 selects the broadcast method at operation of S3, the controlling unit 60 determines whether a broadcast signal is received at operation of S5.
[51] When receiving the broadcast signal, the controlling unit 60 determines at operation of S7 whether a received broadcast method for receiving the broadcast signal is one of the selected broadcast methods. In this case, the controlling unit 60 compares a standard of the received broadcast signal and the standard of the selected broadcast method corresponding to the selection signal input from the user input unit 40 so as to determine the received broadcast method.
[52] When it is determined at operation of S7 that the received broadcast method is one of the selected broadcast methods, the controlling unit 60 controls the signal processing unit 20 to process the received broadcast signal by the selected broadcast method at operation of S9.
[53] When it is determined that the received broadcast method is not one of the selected broadcast methods, the controlling unit 60 controls the signal processing unit 20 to process the received broadcast signal by the default broadcast method at operation of SIl.
