Description

A PRESERVATION DEVICE
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a preservation device for preserving a portion of a fruit or vegetable. In particular, the present invention relates to a preservation device having elastic and flexible sidewall portions in order to secure the preservation device to the fruit or vegetable in an easy manner.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
US 5,964,147 discloses a preservation device for preserving a partially eaten portion of a fruit or vegetable having a skin and at least one exposed surface. The preservation device suggested in US 5,964,147 includes a pair of arms. Each arm extends in a longitudinal direction and has a distal portion and a proximal portion. The arms are pivotally connected to each other for movement of the distal portion between an open position for engaging the at least one exposed surface of the partially eaten fruit or vegetable portion and a closed position where the at least one exposed surface of the partially eaten fruit or vegetable portion is engaged with the preservation device. A flat plate is carried by one arm in the distal portion of that arm. The flat plate extends generally perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the arm and is adapted to engage the exposed surface of the fruit or vegetable for preservation purposes.
The preservation device suggested in US 5,964,147 is a rather complicated device in that the two arms are pivotally connected to each other. Furthermore, it appears to be a rather complicated process to safely secure the preservation device of US 5,964,147 to the exposed surface of the fruit or vegetable in that the distal portion of the device needs to be opened and the teeth secured to one of the arms need to be bored into the fruit or vegetable in order to safely secure the device to the fruit or vegetable.
EP 0 793 915 A discloses a device to preserve sausage quality during consumption. The device is made of a cover that is fit on the sausage after its production and is sold with it at points of sale. The cover has an open hemispherical shape with one reinforced zone near and around the perimeter of the opening as well as an outwards inclined zone at the bottom of the reinforced zone that facilitates fitting on the sausage. The smaller diameter of the cover corresponds to the largest sausage diameter so that the best possible fit is assured during consumption. For improving the look of the product there exists a flat extension at the plane of the opening. It is a disadvantage of the device suggested in EP 0 793 915 A that it is designed for preserving sausages having approximately the same diameter along the length of the sausages. Thus, if the diameter along the length of a sausage or the diameters of different sausages varies too much the device suggested in EP 0 793 915 A will not fit properly to the sausage or sausages because the device has a hemispherical shape. However, as long as the device suggested in EP 0 793 915 is only used with sausages, where the diameter can be controlled during production of the sausages, the device will most likely function in an acceptable manner. However, in case of fruits or vegetables, where the diameter is completely uncontrollable, the device according to EP 0 793 915 A will not function properly.
Therefore, it may be seen as an object of the present invention to provide a preservation device which may be easily and quickly positioned over an exposed surface of a partially eaten portion of a fruit or vegetable.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The above-mentioned object is complied with by providing, in a first aspect, a preservation device for preserving a portion of a fruit or vegetable, the preservation device comprising a sidewall portion extending towards an opening adapted to receive at least part of the portion of a fruit or vegetable, the sidewall portion being adapted to form an essentially air-tight seal between the sidewall portion and the portion of the fruit or vegetable at a plurality of axial positions along an axial direction of the sidewall portion, wherein at least part of the sidewall portion is made of an elastic material so as to obtain the essentially air-tight seal between the preservation device and the portion of a fruit or vegetable.
The preservation device may further comprise a bottom portion from which the sidewall portion extends towards the opening. The elastic material of at least part of the sidewall portion may be arranged to secure a safe attachment between the preservation device and the portion of a fruit or vegetable, even though the dimensions of the portion of the fruit or vegetable vary within a given range.
In a second aspect, the present invention relates to a preservation device for preserving a portion of a fruit or vegetable, the preservation device comprising
- a bottom portion, and
- a sidewall portion extending from the bottom portion, the sidewall portion defining an opening adapted to receive at least part of the partially eaten portion of a fruit or vegetable wherein at least part of the sidewall portion is made of an elastic material so as to secure a safe attachment between the preservation device and the portion of a fruit or vegetable. The portion of a fruit or vegetable will typically be a partially eaten fruit or vegetable.
The fruit or vegetable may in principle be any fruit or vegetable. However, fruits or vegetables having an elongated shape, such as bananas, cucumbers etc, are of particular interest. The exposed surface of such fruit or vegetable is in the preservation device in such a manner that the sidewall portion of the preservation device forms a seal with the edges of the exposed surface of the fruit or vegetable. In this way water is prevented from evaporating from the exposed surface whereby the fruit or vegetable is kept fresh.
In order to fit fruits or vegetables within a given size range at least part of the sidewall may form a conical shape in that the opening adapted to receive at least part of the partially eaten portion of a fruit or vegetable defines an inner area being larger than an inner area defined by the bottom portion. Alternatively, or in combination with the conical shape, at least part of the sidewall may form a curved or a parabolic shape in that the opening defines an inner area being larger than an inner area defined by the bottom portion. Thus, the sidewall portion may extend from the bottom portion in a linear manner, a curved manner, a parabolic manner or a combination thereof.
The bottom portion of the preservation device may be made of an elastic material. Preferably, the entire sidewall portion and the entire bottom portion are made of the same elastic material, such as food approved rubber. Different types of rubber, such as silicone rubber or nitrile rubber, are applicable.
The opening adapted to receive the partially eaten portion of a fruit or vegetable may be essentially circular. However, since at least part of the sidewall may be made of an elastic material the opening may be arranged to adapt to non-circular shapes of fruits or vegetables as well.
The sidewall portion and the bottom portion may constitute separate parts attached to each other to form the preservation device. Alternatively, the sidewall portion and the bottom portion may constitute a single and integrated device. Such integrated device may for example be fabricated in an injection moulding process where an injectable material, such as nitrile rubber, is injected into a suitable mould.
In order to ease handling of the preservation device the device may further comprise a handle attached to or integrated with the bottom portion. This handle may in principle take any shape, such as a stem of a cucumber etc. In a third aspect, the present invention relates to a preservation device for preserving a portion of a fruit or vegetable, such as for example a partially eaten fruit or vegetable, the preservation device comprising a sidewall portion having an open end and a closed end, wherein the open end defines an opening adapted to receive the partially eaten portion of a fruit or vegetable, and wherein at least part of the sidewall portion is made of an elastic material so as to secure a safe attachment between the preservation device and the partially eaten portion of a fruit or vegetable. The sidewall portion may be adapted to form an essentially air-tight seal between the sidewall portion and the portion of the fruit or vegetable at a plurality of axial positions along an axial direction of the sidewall portion.
As mentioned previously, the at least part of the sidewall may form a conical shape in that the opening adapted to receive the partially eaten portion of a fruit or vegetable defines an inner area being larger than an inner area defined by the closed end. Alternatively, or in addition thereto, at least part of the sidewall may form a curved or a parabolic shape in that the opening defines an inner area being larger than an inner area defined by the closed end. Thus, the sidewall portion may extend from the closed end in a linear manner, a curved manner, a parabolic manner or a combination thereof.
The entire sidewall may be made of an elastic material. The opening adapted to receive the partially eaten portion of a fruit or vegetable may be essentially circular. However, since at least part of the sidewall may be made of an elastic material the opening may be arranged to adapt to non-circular shapes of fruits or vegetables as well.
The sidewall portion and an associated bottom portion from which the sidewall portion extend may constitute a single and integrated device. Again, such integrated device may for example be fabricated in an injection moulding process where an injectable material, such as nitrile rubber, is injected into a suitable mould whereby the entire sidewall portion and the entire bottom portion may be made of the same elastic material.
In order to ease handling of the preservation device according to the second aspect of the present invention the device may further comprise a handle attached to or integrated with the bottom portion. This handle may in principle take any shape, such as a stem of a cucumber etc.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention will now be explained with reference to the accompanying figures, wherein Fig. 1 shows a preservation device according to the present invention from different perspectives, and
Fig. 2 shows a preservation device attached to a cucumber.
While the invention is susceptible to various modifications and alternative forms, specific embodiments have been shown by way of example in the drawings and will be described in detail herein. It should be understood, however, that the invention is not intended to be limited to the particular forms disclosed. Rather, the invention is to cover all modifications, equivalents, and alternatives falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In its most general aspect the present invention relates to a preservation device having a non-cylindrical and elastic sidewall portion having an open end and a closed end. The open end is adapted to receive the partially eaten portion of a fruit or vegetable whereas the closed end is adapted to provide an essentially moisture tight seal. This essentially moisture tight seal prevents that water evaporates from an exposed surface of the fruit or vegetable. The elastic properties of at least part of the sidewall portion secure a perfect fit between the preservation device and the fruit or vegetable. Furthermore, the elastic properties of at least part of the sidewall make the attaching and removal of the preservation device from a fruit or vegetable a very simple and easy process.
Fig. 1 shows the preservation device 1 according to the present invention in different perspectives. In the depicted embodiment, the preservation device comprises a stem 3, a sidewall portion 2 and an opening 4 for receiving a fruit or vegetable. The entire preservation device may be made of a flexible material, such as rubber, so as to ensure that the non- cylindrical sidewall 2 adapts to the shape of the fruit or vegetable positioned in the opening 4. By non-cylindrical is meant that the inner dimensions of the opening decreases in the direction from the opening 4 towards the stem 3. The non-cylindrical shape can be established in various ways. Thus, the dimensions may change in a linear, parabolic, elliptical or similar manner.
The use of the preservation device is depicted in Fig. 2a and 2b. In Fig. 2a a cucumber 5 with an exposed surface 6 is depicted. The end of the cucumber with the exposed surface 6 is in Fig. 2b positioned in the opening of the preservation device 1 whereby the preservation device 1 forms an essentially moisture tight seal so that water is prevented from evaporating from the exposed surface 6 of the cucumber. Preventing the evaporation of water ensures that the end of the cucumber near the exposed surface 6 stays fresh over several days.
The non-cylindrical shape and the elastic properties of at least part of sidewall facilitate that the preservation device can be used with fruits and vegetables having various dimensions. Thus, a preservation device according to the present invention is capable of being used with for example both thick and thin cucumbers. It should be noted that the preservation device may not only be used with cucumbers - other fruits and vegetables can be preserved as well.
The preservation device may be fabricated in one piece, i.e. by injection molding, or it may be constituted by several parts, such as for example a bottom part and a sidewall part attached thereto. Similarly, the sidewall part and the bottom part/closed end of the device may be fabricated by the same or different materials. For example, if the preservation device is a single-piece device fabricated using injection molding the entire device would normally be made of the same material. Alternatively, if the preservation device is being constituted by several parts these parts may be fabricated from different materials, such as for example a hard and non-elastic bottom part and an elastic sidewall part.
Preferably, the preservation device is made of a food approved rubber, such as nitrile rubber.
