Description

CURTAIN ACCESSORY
THIS INVENTION relates to accessories for curtains, blinds, table clothes, and the like. More particularly, the invention relates to a device for hanging a curtain on an elongate support member, to a kit for a curtain, and to a method of manufacturing a device for hanging a curtain on an elongate support member such as a rod.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a device for hanging a curtain on an elongate support member, such as a rod, which device includes: a support body member having an operatively front face and an operatively rear face; and a hook-like hanging arrangement for supporting a curtain in use, fast with and projecting from the rear face of the body member, the hanging arrangement being spaced inwardly from an operatively upper edge of the body member, and comprising a curved end portion projecting away from the upper edge, for engagingly supporting the device on the elongate support member.
It will be appreciated that the hanging arrangement will be of sufficient strength to withstand the weight of the curtain to be hung or supported thereon.
The curved end portion may define a pointed end, for piercing a curtain to insert the hook-like hanging arrangement through the curtain, the pointed end projecting away from said upper edge. In particular, the device may include a cover or cap for protectively covering the pointed end of the hanging arrangement. Thus, the cover or cap may be provided to prevent accidental injury to a user, and/or to protect a wall on which the elongate support member is mounted, and/or other fabric such as a lace curtain, from being damaged by the pointed end.
The front face of the body member may have an outline of any desired shape or configuration. For example, the outline of the front face of the body member may have a shape selected from the group consisting of circular, rectangular, square, ovoidal, triangular, elliptical, and combinations thereof. Preferably, the desired shape or configuration of the outline of the body member is rectangular.
The device may include a stabilising element, fast with and projecting from the rear face of the body member, the stabilising element being inwardly spaced from an operatively lower edge of the body member, opposite the upper edge and spaced from the hanging arrangement. Preferably, the stabilising element is in the form of an elongate pin having a pointed end for piercing through a curtain, to supportingly hold the device in position to the curtain, the stabilising element in use being at a lower level than the hanging arrangement. Thus, the device may include a cover or cap for protectively covering the pointed end of the stabilizing element. Instead, the stabilising element may include clipping formations for clippingly securing the device in position to a curtain.
The device may be integrally formed from a settable plastics material, for example, as in a moulding. Instead, the device may be of metal, with the body member being of sheet metal. Thus, the metal may be selected from a variety of suitable metals such as, but not limited to, steel, alloy metal, and aluminium. In this case, the hanging arrangement and/or the stabilising element may be secured to the body member by any suitable method which may include, but is not limited to, welding, riveting, gluing, and screwing.
Preferably, the body member is of a settable plastics material and the hanging arrangement is of wire secured to the plastics material by suitable means. More preferably, the body member is of settable plastics material, with both the hanging arrangement and the stabilising element being of wire, secured to the plastics material by suitable means. Thus, the hanging arrangement and/or the stabilising element may be secured to the body member by gluing. In a particular embodiment of the invention, the body member is of settable plastics material provided with groove formations along the facing face, with suitable holes provided proximal the upper edge and lower edge, for respectively receiving the hanging arrangement and the stabilising element, in the case where it is an elongate pin. Thus, the hanging arrangement and stabilising element are received through the respective holes and then securingly received into the groove formations to secure them to the body member, with glue being optionally provided at the holes, to more securingly attach the hanging arrangement and/or the stabilising element to the body member.
The operatively front face of the body member may include decorative features. Preferably, the decorative features are provided on a separate covering plate, the covering plate being connectable by suitable means to the body member, to cover the front face of the body member. The decorative features may optionally be provided in any suitable form, for example, painted, upholstered, jewellery or decorative motifs, and the like.
The device may be for use with any one of curtain hanging accessories selected from the group consisting of gliders, runners, curtain tapes, curtain hooks and curtain rings. Preferably, however, the device is for use directly on an elongate support member such as a rod or rail, the support member typically being a curtain rail, a curtain rod, or a curtain cord, with the hanging arrangement thereof, being received around said elongate support member and slideable thereon, to extend or retract a curtain supported thereon. Thus, it is a particular feature of the device in accordance with the present invention that it does not require use of any of the abovementioned curtain accessories.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a kit for a curtain, which kit includes: a plurality of devices as defined and described above; a length of flexible material for use as a curtain; and an elongate support member such as a rod, on which, in use, the devices are to be supported to extend and retract the flexible material.
The flexible sheet material may be a fabric. Instead, the flexible sheet material may be of plastics material, for example, for use as a shower curtain or bath curtain.
Conveniently, the length of flexible material is provided with a plurality of hanging openings, said openings being defined adjacent a length of said flexible material, the hanging arrangement being received therethrough. Similarly, instead of the stabilising element piercing the curtain, the flexible material may be provided with apertures thereon, spaced from the hanging openings, through which the stabilising element may be received. It will be appreciated that where the stabilising element comprises clipping formations, the curtain will neither have the apertures nor be pierced.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of manufacturing a device for hanging a curtain on an elongate support member such as a rod, which method includes the steps of: providing a support body member having an operatively front face and an operatively rear face; providing a hook-like hanging arrangement on the body member, for supporting a curtain in use, such that the hanging arrangement is fast with and projects from the rear face of the body member, the hanging arrangement being spaced inwardly from an operatively upper edge of the body member, and comprising a curved end portion having a pointed end facing away from the upper edge, for engagingly supporting the device on the elongate support member; and providing a stabilising element on the body member, fast with and
projecting from the rear face of the body member, the stabilising element being
inwardly spaced from an operatively lower edge of the body member opposite
the upper edge, and spaced from the hanging arrangement.
The invention will now be described, by way of a non-limiting example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 shows a three-dimensional view of an embodiment of a device for hanging a curtain on an elongate support member such as a rod, in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 shows a schematic front elevation of the device of Figure 1 ; and Figure 3 shows a schematic representation of a side elevation of the device of Figure 1 , hung on an elongate support member in the form of a curtain rail
supported on a wall of a building, with a curtain hanging therefrom. In the drawings, reference numeral 10 generally indicates a device for hanging a curtain on an elongate support member such as a rod, in accordance with the invention.
The device 10 comprises an elongate support body member 12 having a rectangular shaped outline. The device 10 has a hook-like curtain hanging arrangement 14 secured to the body member 12 and a stabilising element in the form of an elongate pin 16 also secured to the body member 12.
The body member 12 is of settable plastics material having a thickness of 2mm; and has an operatively front face 18, a rear face 20, an operatively upper edge 22 and an operatively lower edge 24. The upper edge 22 is spaced apart from the lower edge 24. The front face 18 and rear face 20 have dimensions of 50mm X 100mm. The front face 18 has a longitudinal groove 26 (see Figure 2) extending from the upper edge 22 to the lower edge 24. The body member 12 has two securing holes 28 and 30, located in the groove 26 and extending therethrough from the front face 18 to the rear face 20. The securing holes 28 and 30 are inwardly spaced from the upper edge 22 and the lower edge 24, respectively. The securing holes 28 and 30 are for use in securing, respectively, the hanging arrangement 14 and the stabilising element 16, to the body member 12.
The hanging arrangement 14 is of hardened stainless steel wire having a diameter of 2mm. The hanging arrangement 14 has a curved hook-like end portion 32 having a pointed-end portion 34, which in use is inwardly directed, away from the upper edge 22. The hanging arrangement 14 also has a supporting portion 36, located proximal the rear face 20 on which a curtain, in use, is supported, as shown in Figure 3.
The stabilising element 16 is of hardened steel wire, of 2mm diameter having a pointed end 38, for piercing a curtain. The stabilising element 16 is secured to the body member 12 at a position inwardly spaced from the lower edge 24 via the securing hole 30 located in the groove 26, and as described an illustrated hereunder with reference to Figure 1.
Referring now to Figure 2, a front elevation of the device 10 is shown, illustrating how the hanging arrangement 14 and the stabilising element 16 are secured to the body member 12. The hanging arrangement 14 is secured to the body member 12, via one of its ends 40 which is received through the upper securing hole 28 and securingly bent into the groove 26, such that the end 40 is flush with the front face 18, with the hanging arrangement 14 then projecting from the rear face 20 of the body member 12 as shown in Figure 1. Similarly, the stabilising element 16 is also secured to the body member 12 via one of its ends 42 which is received through the lower securing hole 30 and then securingly bent into the groove 26, such that the end 42 is flush with the front face 18, with the stabilising element 16 then projecting from the rear side 20 of the body member 12, as shown in Figure 2.
In use, the front face 18 is optionally provided with decorative features in the form of a coloured fabric (not shown) secured thereto via a self-release adhesive strip (not shown) on the front face 18, to concealingly cover the groove 26, the securing holes 28, 30, and the respective ends 40 and 42 of the hanging arrangement 14 and stabilising element 16. In other embodiments of the invention (not shown), a decorative cover may be provided to cover the front face 18. The decorative cover may, instead of a coloured fabric, be optionally provided with clipping formations for clippingly securing to the body member 12. Thus, in other embodiments of the device 10, co-operating clipping formations may be provided on the body member 12 for clippingly securing the decorative cover to the body member 12.
Referring now to Figure 3 of the drawings, reference numeral 50 generally refers to a side view of the device 10 secured to a curtain 51 , and a section of a cross-sectional side elevation of a window 52, a wall 54 on which the window 52 is mounted and a curtain rail 56.
Thus, the device 10 is secured to the curtain 51, and the device 10 is then hung on the curtain rail 56 provided on the wall 54 above the window 52 via the hanging arrangement 14. In use, the pointed-end portion 34 of the hanging arrangement 14 pierces the curtain 51 , adjacent a top edge 58 thereof, and the hanging arrangement 14 is then inserted through the curtain 51 until the curtain 51 is supported on the supporting portion 36 of the hanging arrangement 14. The curtain 51 is then pierced at a location distal the top edge 58, and distant the hanging arrangement 14, by the pointed-end 38 of the stabilising element 16, with the stabilising element 16 being inserted therethrough to support the curtain 51 and provide stability to the device 10 against the curtain 51. In other embodiments (not shown), where the stabilising element is in the form of a clipping formation, the device 10 is securingly clipped at more or less the same distal location from the top edge 58 of the curtain 51 , thereby providing some stability to the device 10 on the curtain 51. The same process is repeated with however many devices 10 as are required for hanging the curtain 51 on the curtain rail 56.
The respective pointed ends 34, 38 of the hanging arrangement 14 and the stabilising element 16, may, after insertion through the curtain 51 , be provided with covers 60, for safety reasons.
Each device 10 is then hung on the curtain rail 56 by passing the hanging arrangement 14 over the curtain rail 56 such that the curtain 51 is supported more or less on the supporting portion 36, with the curved hook-like end portion 32 of the hanging arrangement 14 preventing the device 10 from being dislodged from the rail 56. Thus, in use, the device 10 is slideable, via the hanging arrangement 14, along the curtain rail 56 to extend the curtain 51 to its closed condition and retract the curtain 51 to its open condition, as the case may be. It is an advantage of the device 10 for hanging a curtain in accordance with the invention and as illustrated with reference to the drawings, that the curtain need not have a hanging tape secured thereto. It is a further advantage of the device 10 that the device 10 is for use, directly with and on an elongate support member which may be in the form of any one of a curtain rail, a curtain rod, or cord, without use of any other curtain accessories known in the art. Thus, the device 10 in accordance with the present invention and as illustrated is easy to use, and reduces the time required to prepare a curtain for hanging on a curtain rail, a curtain rod, or a cord.
Further, the device 10 makes it easier and quicker to create decorative or patterning on a curtain prior to or during hanging thereof on an elongate support member such as a curtain rod. Further, the device 10 also acts as an aesthetically pleasing decorative article, when its front face 18 is provided with decorative
features.
