Abstract

A radar system uses an array of transceivers combined with signal processing techniques to provide a new type of medical imaging technology. The system detects foreign objects such as sponges, surgical tools, etc., based on the difference in the electrical properties between biological tissue and the foreign object. Advantageously, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques are coupled with statistical filtering algorithms to detect, locate, and optionally also identify a foreign object.
