Abstract

The Mobile Dictionary is a telemetric application that allows users to interact with the Mobile Dictionary system to retrieve a variety of word definitions, translations and synonyms. The interaction is achieved through landline telephones using voice and or cellular telephones using data transfer. The cellular phones data transfer applies to the following technologies: sms, mms, wap, gprs, ussd and any future technology that cellular telephone manufacturers, software companies or network providers may develop. Using an updateable word definition and translation database, users will be able to access the Mobile Dictionary 24 hours a day and have real-time access to the required information.

Description

Mobile Dictionary / SMS Dictionary
Technical Field and description The Mobile Dictionary is a telemetric application that allows users to interact with the Mobile Dictionary application system to retrieve a variety of word definitions and translations. The interaction is achieved through landline phones using voice and or cellular telephones using data transfer. The cellular telephones data transfer applies to the following technologies: sms (short message service), mms (multi media service), wap (wireless application protocol), gprs (global pocket radio system), ussd (unstructured supplementary services data) and any future technology that cellular telephone manufacturers, software companies or network providers may develop. The data version of the Mobile Dictionary system will use simple info text technology with a strong back end of SQL database integrated with GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology. Using voice recognition applications, the user will also be able to access the service using normal voice calls. The user will command the service using voice to translate or give definitions for the desired word.
Background Art
The telephone user will have real-time access to information at any time and the service will be updated regularly to ensure that the database remains current. Objectives of the Invention
The objective of the Mobile Dictionary system is the provision of access to a centralized dictionary database similar to printed or on-line dictionaries via the existing cellular network or landline telephone providers. Disclosure of Invention
The claim for which protection is sought comprises the entitlement to claim priority, as well as the idea and method of providing a dictionary service via various telephone applications. Brief Description of drawings
With reference to the figures provided hereafter, the user will follow these steps to access the service.
Figure 1 : A cellular telephone user will enter the required word into the cellular phone, using the "Write Message" option and send an sms (short message service) to a specified number. A pre-paid cellular telephone user will have his/her credit balance checked first, while a user with a contract will automatically be put through to the network. The sms will reach the network provider via the base station, following the path indicated by arrows A and B. The message is then passed from the Network Provider to the application where the Mobile Dictionary database is housed through a dedicated or leased line (arrow C). The message is then processed, the database is searched for the relevant match and the definition / translation / synonym is sent back to the user via the network provider and base station (following the path represented by arrows D, E, and F). Figure 2: A landline telephone user will phone a specified number and be connected to the landline network provider (arrow G). The call will then be transferred to the Mobile Dictionary service through a dedicated or leased line (arrow H). The message is then processed, the database is searched for the relevant match and the definition / translation / synonym is given to the user using voice recognition software (represented by arrows I and J). Industrial Applicability The Mobile Dictionary is an educational solution that is not only aimed at learners, but all cellular telephone and standard telephone users. People who use cellular telephones are assumed literate and therefore will have the ability to use the Mobile Dictionary.
Currently there are approximately twenty million active cellular telephone users in South Africa and the market is growing. Landline telephones are at the five million mark with a usage ratio of 1:3. This means that on average three people on a regular basis use one standard phone. This service will in future also include other major local and international languages and therefore make it a useful service for tourists, business people, etc.

Claims

The claim The claim for which protection is sought is the entitlement to claim priority for the method of accessing dictionary definitions, translations and/or synonyms similar to those listed in printed or on-line dictionaries, as well as the idea and method itself, by following the procedures currently used in the mobile and landline phone industry. The method consists of the following steps: • The user sends a message containing the word or phrase for which an explanation, translation or synonym is needed, or uses a landline telephone that accesses voice recognition software; • The message is sent to the network providers via the base stations or via the landline using a specific access number, and will be transferred to the Mobile Dictionary database; • The centralized database will search for the required word or phrase and then return the synonym, translation or definition and any additional information to the user; • The user will have real-time access to definitions or translations at any time of day; • The centralized database will be updatable to ensure that headwords, definitions and translations are as current as possible.
