Description

PHOTOLUMINESCENT NON-SLIP TAPE TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention is directed to adhesive tapes with non- slip and photoluminescent properties and processes for their manufacture. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Several embodiments have been proposed in the prior art aiming at aggregating in a single product characteristics of non-slipness and photoluminescence, as a way for preventing slips during traffic, at the same time enabling the visualization of exit paths from inner environments of buildings and locomotion vehicles, in cases of power and other illumination sources, providing a safe indication of the position that pedestrians should step for finishing their movements through the stairs or further for making the evacuation of buildings and transportation vehicles possible in unusual situations or emergencies, such as in accidents or fires, when the difficulty of movements of the pedestrians due to the poor visibility may be a decisive factor for their own safety.
US Patent 4,328,274 discloses a product, manufactured and sold by the applicant of the present invention, which consists of a transparent non-slip material, formed by a polymeric film base coated by layers of a resinous material containing abrasive particles. The other face of the polymeric film is covered by an adhesive layer. Based on the embodiment of this product there is proposed the disclosed embodiment in this invention, for photoluminescent non-slip tapes.
US Patent 3,034,943 discloses a non-slip floor and a process for the manufacture thereof, composed basically by layers of resin- impregnated fabric, to which luminescent and abrasive particles are added.
US Patent 5,103,608 discloses a non-slip luminescent device for surfaces such as stair treads. Its basic embodiment consists of a base that should be mechanically fixed to the surface of the tread or floor. Onto this base, application of a non-slip and a luminescent material or device is alternated, in such a way so that the non-slip parts are more elevated than the luminescent parts, providing thus a certain degree of protection from the abrasion caused by the traffic over the invention to the luminescent parts.
US Patent 4,998,391, in a very similar way to the one described above, discloses a device for fixation over the turns of stair treads, constituted by a base containing recesses or pins which allow the fixation, onto said base of polymeric embodiment strips containing a luminescent layer, besides other support and protection layers, obtained by the coextrusion of said layers.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention is directed to a tape comprising a polymeric film layer coated on one side with a transparent resin system containing an abrasive mineral substance. On the side of the polymeric film layer opposite the resin system there is applied one or more variable width adhesive strips of a phosphorescent (photoluminescent) adhesive in an adequate concentration. On top of the adhesive strips is an additional adhesive layer, covering the total width of the tape, for application and adherence of the tape to a floor or other substrate. A paper or plastic film layer protects this adhesive layer.
Other embodiments are also possible, allowing not only the manufacture of transparent tapes but also colored tapes. The colored tapes obtained are preferentiallyblack in color. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

Figures 1 through 6 illustrate several different embodiments of colored, photoluminescent, and non-slip adhesive tapes. The tapes are typically black, gray, or dark gray in color, more typically black, except for the region in which there is a photoluminescent adhesive strip, which may be of a different coloration.
Figures 7 and 8 are illustrative of transparent, photoluminescent, and non-slip adhesive tapes, except for the region in which there is a photoluminescent material strip, which may be opaque.
Figure 1 illustrates one embodiment of a colored, photoluminescent non-slip adhesive tape 10 according to the present invention. As illustrated in Figure 1, the adhesive tape 10 includes a polymeric film layer 2 (preferably transparent), which may be made of be polyester, polypropylene, polyethylene or any other polymer adequate for the manufacturing process of the present invention. One side of the polymeric film layer 2 is covered by a resin system 1 that is formed from a transparent resin of synthetic or natural origin mixed with an abrasive mineral substance. Suitable resins include polyurethanes, phenolic resins, urea-formaldehyde, acrylic or melamine resin or epoxy resins. The abrasive mineral substance of system 1 consists of a substance of the following type: aluminum or silicon oxide, silicon carbide, silica, irregular glass particles, (thermoplastic or thermoset) polymeric particles, solid or hollow glass microspheres or ceramics microspheres, or polymeric microspheres. The function of resin system 1 is to provide the product with a non-slip property as well as durability and resistance to traffic. Optionally, additives can be added to the system 1 that will improve the resistance and durability of the product as a whole, for example, ultraviolet radiation or thermal degradation protective agents.
On the side of the polymeric film layer 2 opposite the resin system 1 there is applied, by a laminating or coating process, one or more of adhesive strips 3 to which a substance has been added that will provide it with photoluminescence properties. The width of these strips and the spacing between them may vary according to the desired visual effect in the absence of light or in order to comply with specific traffic and safety standards, in all the embodiments disclosed in this document. The adhesive used for the adhesive strips 3 can be selected from one of the following adhesive groups: solvent-based adhesives, water- based adhesives (emulsions), or hot melt-type adhesives, as acrylic adhesives, hydrocarbon resin systems or tar esters and natural (polyisoprene) or synthetic (EPDM - ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) rubber, polyurethane adhesives, styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymers, styrene-ethylene-butylene- styrene terpolymers or styrene-ethylene copolymers.
The phosphorescent substance in adhesive strip 3 may comprise zinc sulfate, calcium sulfate, strontium oxide aluminate, without however being limited to these options. The selection of the phosphorescent substance to be used is based on the color and time of desired photoluminescence. Other pigments may be added to the formulation aiming at, for example, highlighting the brightness of the phosphorescent strip in the dark, or even providing the product with a determined visual effect when in presence of natural or artificial light. Alternatively, the photoluminescent adhesive strips 3 may be applied onto the same side of the polymeric film 2 as the mineral resin system 1 (not shown); however, this application preferably should be made prior to the application of the resin system 1 onto the polymeric film layer 2. The remaining features of this alternative embodiment remain the same as those described and illustrated in Figures 1 through 3.
As illustrated in Figures 1 and 1 A, adhesive layer 4 is applied over the photoluminescent adhesive strips 3. The function of the adhesive layer 4 is to allow the application of the tapes to a floor or to another substrate so that the tapes will remain resistant to traffic without ungluing or suffering damage. The adhesive layer 4 is pigmented in order to achieve the desired color for the final product. Black, gray, and dark gray colors are preferred. Alternatively, the adhesive layer may be kept colorless, for obtaining a transparent tape (illustrated as adhesive layer 7 in Figures 7 and 8).The adhesive used for the adhesive layer 4 can be selected from one of the following adhesive groups: solvent-based adhesives, water-based adhesives (emulsions), or hot melt-type adhesives, as acrylic adhesives, hydrocarbon resin systems or tar esters and natural (polyisoprene) or synthetic (EPDM) rubber, polyurethane adhesives, styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymers, styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene terpolymers or styrene-ethylene copolymers. Preferably, the adhesive layer 4 covers the entire side of the polymeric film 2 that it is applied to. As a way for protecting the adhesive layer 4 prior to its application to the destination substrate, the adhesive layer 4 may be covered by a protective polymeric film or paper layer 5 that has minimal adherence and easy removal from the adhesive layer that it protects. The protecting layer 5 is of the type of paper, siliconized paper, paper laminated with plastic film, or in addition polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl or polyester polymeric film. A roll of the colored, photoluminescent and non-slip adhesive tape is illustrated in Figure 2. The roll goes through a cutting process to the desired width rolls, which may house in themselves one or more phosphorescent strips 3. This process is a part of the manufacture of all the embodiments of the present invention.. Figure 2 A illustrates an exploded partial view of the roll of colored, photoluminescent, and non-slip adhesive tape material illustrated in Figure 2.
Figure 3 illustrates a cross-sectional view of the invention illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 4 illustrates another embodiment of a colored, photoluminescent, and non-slip adhesive tape material 20 according to the present invention. In this embodiment there are applied, after the application of photoluminescent adhesive strips 3 and onto the same side of polymeric film layer 2, one or more dye layers 6 in the color that is desired for the final product. In the next step, there is applied a colorless adhesive layer 7, which will also be protected by the polymeric film or paper layer 5. The function of the adhesive layer 7 is similar to the function of adhesive layer 4, allowing the application of the tapes to a floor or to another substrate where it must remain, resisting traffic without ungluing or suffering damage.
The alternative embodiment 30 presented in Figure 5 is different from the embodiment of Figure 4 only in the positioning of the photoluminescent adhesive strips 3. In this case, the photoluminescent adhesive strips 3 are applied onto the same side of the polymeric film 2 as the mineral resin system 1 ; however, this application must be made prior to the application of the resin system 1 onto the polymeric film layer 2. The remaining features (layers 1, 5, 6, and 7) of this alternative embodiment remain the same as those described and illustrated in Figure 4.
Figure 6 illustrates another embodiment 40 of the present invention, with an equivalent function to those described above. In this embodiment a colored polymeric film 8 is used instead of the previously described transparent polymeric film 2. The color of the polymeric film 8 will define the color of the final product, eliminating the need for adding pigment to the adhesive layer 4, or the need for additional dye layers 6. The remaining features (represented by numerals 1, 3, 5, and 7) remain the same as those illustrated in Figure 5.
Figures 7 and 8 are illustrative of transparent, photoluminescent, and non-slip adhesive tapes 50 and 60, respectively, except for the region in which there is a photoluminescent material strip, which may be opaque.
The embodiment illustrated in Figure 7 is very similar to that illustrated in Figure 3, except that in the embodiment illustrated in Figure 7, a transparent adhesive layer 7 is used instead of adhesive layer 4, which provided color to the product according to the pigmentation of the adhesive.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 8 is similar to that illustrated in Figure 7, except that the photoluminescent adhesive strips 3 are applied onto the same side of the polymeric film 2 as the mineral resin system 1.; however, this application must be made prior to the application of resin system 1 onto the polymeric film layer 2 . The remaining features (layers 1, 2, 5, and 7) of this alternative embodiment remain the same as those described and illustrated in Figure 7.
Figure 9 illustrates the application of any of the above embodiments of the present invention to the stair treads, as a way for preventing slips during traffic. Furthermore, in power outage situations, or any other form of illumination outages, the photoluminescent strips provide a safe indication of the position in which the pedestrians should step, for finishing their movements through the stairs or even for allowing the evacuation of buildings and transportation vehicles in unusual situations or emergencies, such as accidents and fires, when difficulty in movement due to the poor visibility may be a decisive factor for their safety. Some advantages of all the embodiments of the present invention t over other known or possible arts include: a) the non-slip protection and the path indication through photoluminescence arecombined in the same solution, with high value in emergency situations, such as power outages; b) the utilization of a self-adhesive material enables an easy application to new and old buildings, without the need for special projects or high investments for the adaptation to the places in which it is desired to apply it; c) the total protection of the photoluminescent material, which is found inserted in one of the inner layers of the products, isolated and protected from the harmful effects of humidity, from the abrasion caused by direct traffic over it, and from the direct action of ultraviolet rays; and d) the use of an adhesive layer containing the photoluminescent substance alternatively to the use of photoluminescent films, with or without adhesive, also brings a series of advantages:
- reduction of the complexity of the embodiment of the product, with the reduction of production steps and used raw materials, more productivity and, consequently, lower cost and selling price.
- manufacture of a high quality and increased durability product, as the low width of the photoluminescent adhesive tape, when compared to the width of a polymeric film or photoluminescent film, interferes less in the profile of the non-slip tape, reducing thus the chances of wear of the material by the traffic over it.
