The contents of TV broadcasting likely to be offered through the Korean digital satellite broadcasting service are as follows ;
1. Wide screen transmission
Through the digital satellite broadcasting service, wide screen TV broadcasting having screen aspect ratios of 4 : 3 and 16 : 9 is planned to be launched. Images are vivid because the screen is expanded in right and left sides, so it is possible to simulate the effect of seeing a movie. The number of effective pixels of an image to be transmitted is 720 x 480 for the screen aspect ratios of 4 : 3 and 16 : 9. However, when a 16 : 9 screen image is transmitted, information of PAN/SCAN is inserted into an image basic stream for 4 : 3 screen receivers. The information of PAN/SCAN indicates an area to be displayed by the 4 : 3 screen receiver.
2. Caption service
The caption service presents the dialogues or actions of actors on the bottom (the position is not necessarily fixed) of a screen, and may be turned on/off depending on the viewer's preference. This service is provided for hearing-impaired persons and foreign movies, which is currently employed for ground wave TV broadcasting in the western U.S. and planned to be provided in Korean satellite broadcasting. Since the caption service is not currently provided in Korean ground TV broadcasting, there are no Korean standards. Therefore, all formats and codes are to comply with EIA- 608 until Korean standards are established.
In the Korean digital satellite broadcasting, a video/audio compression method of digital broadcasting complies with the video and audio compression and restoration standards of MPEG (Moving Picture Exert Group) 1 and MPEG2, which are worldwide moving picture compression methods. The Korean digital satellite broadcasting adopts MPEG2 transport packet standards to transmit signals in the form of packets. Additionally, in the Korean digital satellite broadcasting standards, program guide information is transmitted in PAT, PMT, NIT, EIT, SDT, TDT with the transport packet structure of MPEG2 maintained as they are for program guide. This structure is described hereafter.
The contents of PAT, CAT and PMT defined in MPEG2 system layer (ISO/IEC 133818-1) are as follows;
PAT (Program Association Table) : provides PMT and NIT packet information.
CAT (Conditional Access Table) : provides PID of EMM for CA system.
PMT (Program Map Table) : provides PID of a video/audio packet, a packet having PCR and an ECM packet .
The program guide information defined in DVB and used in the Korean satellite broadcasting is as follows;
NIT (Network Information Table) : provides information for automatic tuning. That is, it provides the structure information of a physical network including the relay No. of relevant broadcasting and an ECC coding method.
SDT (Service Description Table) : is the description of service for a satellite broadcasting network or service included in a particular transport stream. Each SDT section includes data belonging to one defined transport stream. SDT can be used in preparation of program guides.
EIT (Event Information Table) : provides chronological information on events in all high definition (HD) TV satellite broadcasting channels. Each EIT section includes data on only one service-id related to an arbitrary channel. EIT provides the program guide information. EIT is constructed to provide the number of PID used to transmit program information, program guide period (start time and duration) provided in PID, and transmission interval (period between adjacent transmission of same program information) of PID of EIT.
.TDT (Time Data Table) : has UTC-time and date information.
EIT information can be narrowly referred to as program guide information, and is made to be transmitted in EITl, 2, 3 and 4 by allowing the information to have different transmission periods depending on guided time band.
Program guide messages include additional data for program guides. A receiver produces and shows a program guide screen for a subscriber to select a program using such additional data. The additional data is used for the automatic tuning of a digital broadcasting carrier for a selected program. The additional data for providing program guide information is set to be 512 Kbytes.
PID for PMM (NIT, SDT and TDT) table can be found in a PAT related to program number 0. The number of EIT tables and PID related to relevant EIT table can be found in a EIT coding descriptor included in NIT.
In addition, digital broadcasting occupies a principal position not only through satellite broadcasting but also through Internet broadcasting or cable broadcasting. The digital broadcast receivers include a digital TV, a digital satellite STB, a digital cable STB, an interactive TV STB, etc. In this specification, one of these receivers is simply referred to as a digital broadcast receiver. The digital TV basically supports an Electronic Program Guide (EPG) function and an interactive function, and includes applications for Internet browser, E-mail, games, etc. Most digital satellite STBs or digital cable STBs also support an EPG function and an interactive function, and include an E-mail function, and some of them including even applications for Internet browser and games.
Now, how the digital TV displays the additional service contents on a TV screen will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 shows a display method of a typical EPG. The digital broadcast receiver can channelwise, timewise and genrewise (e.g. sports, drama, movie, news) search currently broadcasted programs through a EPG function, and reserve them. Fig. 1 is an EPG screen of Hewmax displayed on a TV.
In addition, there is a method of displaying program related data, which is shown in Fig. 1. This method can support a data service, so users can receive additional services such as provision of sports items (game results, game schedules, player profiles, etc.), provision of drama stories, etc. Users can view player profiles, game highlights, game scores and other games while watching related sports games. If a user begins to watch a drama from the middle, the summary of the story is given.
As shown in Fig. 3, since bi-directional service is supported, a user can be provided with additional services such as quiz programs, interactive educational broadcast, real-time public opinion surveys, etc. Viewers of programs such as "Crime Scene Investigation (CIS)" of CBS or "The Today Show" of NBC can obtain more information on such programs or participate in on-the- spot surveys using the bi-directional TV service. Among the bi-directional services is "Web TV Plus" or "Ultimate TV" that shows the viewer's score after solving the same problems given to player while watching a problem solving TV program such as "Jeopardy" or "Wheel of Fortune".
In addition to the services described above, users can be provided with various additional services, including the service that the user can chat while presenting her or his opinion by clicking a relevant icon while watching a current event discussion.
However, as can be seen in the drawings described above, EPG, the program related data service, the bidirectional service, the Internet service, etc. have a problem in use with a TV screen.
First, since TV is commonly used at home, using the services described above can affect TV watching of other family members. For example, in case of using EPG or the program related data service, other family members cannot watch the TV, and are inconvenient. If a husband views a past story of the drama or news about actors while his wife is enjoying watching a drama, it can cause inconvenience to the wife. When the husband eagerly watches a sports game, it is very difficult for the wife to view weather information on a TV before leaving home. The situation is same for home shopping information. While others watch a TV, it is far more difficult to play a game included in a TV or STB or to connect to the Internet or to check an E-mail.
Second, it is difficult to secure privacy. Responding to public opinion surveys, chatting or checking E-mails are private matters. Using such services while watching TV together with family members not only causes inconvenience to others but also reveals one's private affairs. Sometimes there may be instances when it is difficult to use various services because children are present. For example, if a child is around a user, it is difficult for the user to search adult fields. Third, when inputting characters while using various services, such as E-mail, chatting, public opinion surveys and information search services, it is inconvenient to input the characters while watching a TV screen. Since most users are accustomed to using PCs or PDAs, they are accustomed to inputting characters while closely viewing the screen.
Disclosure of the Invention
Accordingly, the present invention has been made keeping in mind the above problems occurring in the prior art, and an object of the present invention is to provide a method of displaying additional service contents in a broadcasting system, in which data closely related to a currently broadcasted program, program guide data, emergency data and so on are displayed not on a digital broadcast receiver but on a remote controller provided with an additional display, thereby enabling bidirectional control as well as preventing disruption of the image of the digital broadcast receiver.
In order to accomplish the above object, the present invention provides a method of displaying additional service data in a broadcasting system, comprising the steps of: receiving broadcasting signals transmitted from a broadcasting station via an arbitrary means, and extracting only video and audio signals from the broadcasting signals received; displaying the video signals extracted at said extraction step on a display of a digital broadcast receiver in a full screen fashion; wirelessly transmitting various control signals and data corresponding to additional service information included in the remaining signals of the broadcasting signals; and receiving the control signals and data transmitted at said transmission step, and displaying the control signals and data on an additional display of a terminal separate from the display of the digital broadcast receiver.
Preferably, the method further comprise the step of enabling bi-directional communication with the broadcasting station by re-transmitting to the broadcast receiver various data related to the control signals.
Brief Description of the Drawings
The above and other objects, features and other advantages of the present invention will be more clearly understood from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is view showing a conventional display method for displaying EPG;
Fig. 2 is view showing a conventional display method for displaying program related data;
Fig. 3 is view showing a conventional display method for supporting a bi-directional service;
Fig. 4 is an exemplary view generally showing an inventive concept of the present invention; and
Fig. 5 is an exemplary view showing a construction of a system of the present invention. Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
Hereinafter, a method of displaying additional service data in a digital broadcasting system in accordance with the present invention is described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
First, referring to Fig.4, the inventive concept of the present invention is briefly described. The present invention is conceived to overcome the shortcomings of the conventional methods. The shortcomings can be removed by employing a remote controller provided with a display (or a touch screen) .
In this case, other terminals, such as a PDA, a webpad, a pocket personal computer, a notebook computer and the like, can be employed as the remote controller for displaying data broadcasting service contents and implementing bi-directional control.
In addition, it is possible to provide a specially designed remote controller. Additional service data are displayed on the display of the remote controller, so a user can use additional services (for example, interactive services, and Internet service) while watching a TV without causing inconvenience to other family members and revealing one' s own private information.
If the user requests a digital broadcast receiver (a digital TV, a digital satellite STB, a digital cable STB, or an interactive TV STB) to display additional information service contents on the display of a remote controller by simple key manipulation of the remote controller, then the digital data broadcast receiver transmits to the remote controller the additional information service contents, which can be displayed on the digital broadcast receiver without the manipulation.
The remote controller can display signals related to the digital broadcasting guide information on the display of the remote controller, and control them. That is, the remote controller can receive and control the additional information service contents that a TV can receive and control. On the remote controller, the user can view weather information, play games, participate in a public- opinion surveys and exchange the E-mail while watching TV. Of course, it is possible to display and control all additional information service contents. That is, all things that can be done on the TV are done on the remote controller. A touch screen is more convenient to use.
In addition, communication between the remote controller and the TV or STB can be implemented through wireless communication using infrared communication, home RF, Wireless LAN, or through wire communication using a cable. Therefore, a program which interconnects the digital TV, digital satellite STB, digital cable STB, or interactive TV to the remote controller is installed on the terminal such as a remote controller having a display, a PDA, a webpad, a pocket personal computer, etc. Such a program can implement the method of the present invention regardless of operation systems or hardware used.
The system of the present invention comprised of the digital broadcast receiver and the additional display terminal and used in conjunction with the digital broadcasting system is illustrated in Fig. 5. In this embodiment, a Central Processing Unit (CPU) having limited memory space in comparison with that of a computer and different according to the models of manufacturing companies are employed, and is connected to a broadcasting service provider through a modem line. In addition, although blocks restricted to MPEG 1 and 2 are implemented as an embodiment, the present invention is not limited to these blocks.
That is, as shown in Fig. 5, the system of the present invention is generally comprised of the digital broadcast receiver and the corresponding remote controller .
The digital broadcast receiver is comprised of a channel decoder 1 for channel-decoding input signals, a MPEG 2 transport decoder 2 for demultiplexing an additional service data stream in a multiplexed stream from the channel decoder 1, a DVB descrambler 3 for descrambling signals from the MPEG 2 transport decoder 2, a MPEG 1, 2 decoder 4 for decoding audio and video signals from the MPEG 2 transport decoder 2, a memory 6 connected to the MPEG 2 transport decoder 2 and a CPU 5, a modem 7 for connecting the CPU 5 and a broadcasting service provider, a smart card 8 connected to the CPU 5, and a radio transceiver unit (a reference numeral is not assigned) for wirelessly transmitting the additional service data detected by the MPEG 2 transport decoder 2.
Here, the modem designated by reference numeral 7 in Fig. 5 is not a general modem but a device functioning as a delay for supporting various reception methods according to various broadcasting methods.
The remote controller is comprised of a touch screen being designated by reference numeral 11 and having both display and data input function, a radio transceiver section 13 capable of data communication with the radio transceiver unit of the digital broadcast receiver, a character signal processing unit 14 for transforming the data received by the radio transceiver unit 14 to characters or icons and changing key input or the like generated at the touch screen 11 to a radio signal, and a signal processing unit 12 for controlling the entire system.
The signal processing section 12 has both a CPU function and a signal processing function of recognizing control signals.
In general, a portion corresponding to the additional service data is written in HTML or JAVA language, and is inserted into a data_byte according to MPEG 2 regulation (ISO/IEC 13818-1) for transport packets in a form of a TAR file or a program_association_data_section in a broadcast transport stream.
The additional service data received by the broadcast receiver can be displayed on a program currently received. Information desired by the user can be searched for in such a way that a menu displayed on the screen of the broadcast receiver is manipulated by the remote controller in the method of searching the Internet using a Web-browser. These additional service data each are formed into a file. These additional service data are transmitted to the broadcast receiver together with relevant audio and video data while being carried on transport packets. As described above, which transport packets the additional data of relevant audio and video is carried on is informed to the broadcast receiver through PMT packets at the time of transmission.
Additional data service using the additional service data transmitted begins when a corresponding channel is selected at the broadcast receiver. The start file among various files is initially selected and executed, results are displayed on the display of the remote controller, and only the image of broadcasting signals is displayed on the screen of the broadcast receiver.
Industrial Applicability
As described above, the present invention provides a method of displaying additional service data in a digital broadcasting system, which allows a user to watch a broadcasting image on the full screen of a broadcast receiver and to recognize the additional service data through a remote controller or other additional terminal.
Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been disclosed for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications, additions and substitutions are possible, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims.
