Abstract
The invention relates to a method for transmitting data via air interface channels, between a first station (UE) and a network-side station (B) of a packet-switching communication system (UMTS), whereby data of a single service corresponding to different allocation criteria is transmitted via the air interface (V). In order to transmit the data in a more efficient manner, the data can also be transmitted on the network side in channels or connections which differ correspondingly.

As a result, the air interface can be used with optimized bandwidth.
For example, in the case of AMR-coded speech, 3 bits are transmitted via a UMTS air interface for one bit of the most important bit classes (class A bit), 1/3 coding being used, while for one bit of a medium-important bit class (B bit ) two bits are transmitted (1/2 coding) and for a bit of the lowest bit class (Class C bit) only the useful bit itself is transmitted without redundancy (1/1 coding).
On the network side, the three different channels of the air interface for the terrestrial part are combined into a single physical channel. For network-based forwarding, procedures are e.g. used in UMTS according to ATM AAL2 (ATM adaptation layer no.2) or circuit-switched methods. In particular, this enables the use of standardized and existing network facilities and network methods for connection-related voice transmission.
For voice transmission through networks, the transport of which is based on the Internet protocol (IP) and the signaling protocols for establishing a connection, e.g. using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), a data stream is generated from one end device to the other end device, which is no longer analyzed by the network element.
Disadvantageously, the data cannot currently be specially prepared for transmission on the air interface and must be transmitted in a channel on the network side and on the air interface. This means that bandwidth-optimized transmission via the air cut parts is not possible.

In a manner known per se, a radio interface for the requested data service is subsequently provided in a fourth method step, in which case three different channels would be provided on the radio interface in the present case. These three channels would be assigned the data bits of a particular one of the three quality of service, which would require a corresponding data conversion for the transmission via the radio interface, i.e. especially the channel coding listed above. On the network side, the three data streams are forwarded via three channels now also made available in the network. For terrestrial or network-side transmission according to the Internet protocol IP, these can optionally be combined in a single logical session with three physical channels. A conversion of the data received via the radio interface on the network side into a single data stream is advantageously no longer absolutely necessary and is not possible according to today's standards. In the case of a transmission in the reverse direction, data are already transmitted as three data streams on the network side in accordance with the Internet protocol IP and transferred to the radio interface.
In order to avoid a bandwidth-consuming connection between the radio interface and network devices in this way, several special transmission channels are thus requested and set up via the radio interface and the network in the present exemplary embodiment. This requires no or only minor adjustments to the functions and procedural steps described in previous standards.
