Abstract

The present invention provides an apparatus for and method of providing living information using the Internet further comprises the steps of constructing a database consisting of the contents demanded by the users in order to support the digital video display apparatus in the users' terminals, transmitting the databse to the Internet information server, transmitting the data from the Internet information server to the signal sharing apparatus nstalled at an apartment complex, hotel, motel and other buildings via a communication server, converting the digital information transmitted to the signal sharing apparatus to analogue signals, designating a dedicated Internet TV channel from a blank channel available to the users in order to be able to receive the data transmitted from the signal sharing apparatus, and transmitting the data to the user's individual terminal via a local line as the user selects the dedicated Internet TV channel.

Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR NEWS SERVICE USING INTERNET
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an apparatus for and method of providing information using the Internet through which the living information and real-time moving image advertisements available in the Web pages of the Internet can be received by a television set located at home without the requirement of a set-top box. The conventional type of visual media are mainly consisted of terrestrial wave and cable TV. Recently, in order to meet the diverse demands of the views, various type of advertisements are run along with the programs on a designated section of the TV monitor through the Internet transmission network or an advertisement storage medium. The viewers can watch the advertisements while watching the programs on TV thereby improving the effects of the advertisement.
Especially, an Internet TV comprises the conventional functions of a TV as well as the Web browser function of an Internet terminal. It can also be classified into an inbuilt type or a set-top box type. The set-top box type can search the internet by connecting the conventional TV with a telephone line. The outer shape of the set-top box is similar to a video tape recorder and by changing the mode from TV mode to external input mode, the information on the Internet can be displayed to the TV monitor without any surrounding adjustment. The Internet TV is emerging as a new visual media winch has the functions of database search, PC communication and e-mail function by connecting a conventional TV to the Internet.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Most of apartment complex, hotel, motel and other buildings are basically equipped with a signal sharing device which allows the viewing of TV and communication, and a modulator which transmits modulated visual and voice signals.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method of providing living and stock market information to the viewers while they are watching the conventional programs on TV. This object can be achieved by the methods comprising the steps of adopting the popular Internet communication network such as PSTN, ISDN, ADSL, coaxial cable, optical cable, satellite reception, wireless LAN method, installing an Internet data reception apparatus in an apartment complex, hotel, motel and other buildings, transmitting the data outputted from the Internet data reception apparatus to the users terminals via a local line, and designating a dedicated Internet TV channel from a blank channel available to the users.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for providing living information using the Internet

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS
In order to achieve the above objects, the method of providing living information using the Internet according to the present invention comprises the steps of transmitting a database to an Internet information server, transmitting the data from the Internet information server to signal sharing apparatus installed at an apartment complex, hotel, motel and other buildings where the users are located, designating a dedicated Internet TV channel from a blank channel available to the users in order to be able to receive the data transmitted from the signal sharing apparatus, and transmitting the data to the user's individual terminal via a local line as the user selects the dedicated Internet TV channel.
According to the present invention, the method of providing living information using the Internet further comprises the steps of constructing a database consisting of the contents demanded by the users in order to support the digital video display apparatus in the users' terminals, transmitting the database to the Internet information server, transmitting the data from the Internet information server to the signal sharing apparatus installed at an apartment complex, hotel, motel and other buildings via a communication server, converting the digital information transmitted to the signal sharing apparatus to analogue signals, designating a dedicated Internet TV chamiel from a blank channel available to the users in order to be able to receive the data transmitted from the signal sharing apparatus, and transmitting the data to the user's individual terminal via a local line as the user selects the dedicated Internet TV channel.
The data transmission methods from the Internet information server to a signal sharing apparatus via a communication server include PSTN, ISDN, ADSL, coaxial cable, optical cable, satellite reception, wireless LAN. For TCP/IP method uses a modem, LAN card, satellite receiver and other possible Internet transmission medium.
The Internet TV according to the present invention selects a channel- S101 by switching on SI 00 the power switch of the TV as shown in FIG. 1. When there is a channel selection input from a user, it checks whether the selected channel is a normal TV signal channel or an Internet data receiving channel, if it is the former then the TV receives a CATV or normal TV broadcasting and if it is the latter then the TV receives a Internet TV broadcasting SI 04. If there is a change in the channel selection, then newly inputted chamiel is compared with the previously selected chamiel SI 02. If there is no change in the channel selection, the presently selected channel is maintained.
The basic contents of the Internet data includes real estate, stock, job vacancy, mediation, trade and electronic commerce of second hand goods and all the information concerning the real life.
The apparatus for providing information using the Internet according to the present invention comprises, a data server which transmits a collected multicast service information in the form of a predefined format to a network, an administrative server which updates the data stored in said data server and transmits service information to the Internet, an Internet data transmission/reception apparatus installed on a signal sharing apparatus in a building which receives the service information from said administrative server and controls the transmission of the service information to a TV set and personal computer, and a signal sharing apparatus which accepts the input/output signals from said Internet data transmission/reception apparatus and connects a local terminal to a line interface and outputs visual and voice signals through a modulator.
FIG. 2 shows the whole constituents of the present invention. The data necessary for construction of a data base are provided from national business operators 10 and regional business operators 20 which have a nationwide business network, and local business operators 30 which acts as local representatives.
The national business operators 10 input data 12 to a data server 12 through a remote control and monitoring system and relay the data to an administrative server 40 after processing the data. The national business operators 10 also mom tor and control each of the regional servers which constitutes a network.
The regional business operators 20 comprise a data server 21 which is consisted of an advertisement & contents production system, a remote control and monitoring system. The regional business operators 20 operate electronic commerce, infoπnation broadcasting, and infoπnation business and receive data from the national business operators 10 and regional business operators 20. The local business operators 30 comprise a data server 32 which is consisted of a contents production system and a remote control and monitoring system and transmits the collected data 31 to regional business operators 20.
The administrative server 40 comprises a data server 41, stream server42 and web server 43 and constitutes a network with the Internet. The data outputted from the data server 41 and stream server 42 are transmitted to an
Internet data transmission/reception apparatus 60 located in a communication room via the Internet 50.
The data server 41 receives and stores the data from a data server 11 of the national business operators 10 and a data server 11 of the regional business operators 20. The data transmitted from a web server 43 can be received from a PC 70 through the
Internet.
The Internet data transmission/reception apparatus 60 converts the received digital signals to analogue signals and transmits them to a signal sharing apparatus SO. If the user's terminal supports a digital video signal display then the above conversion process can be omitted.
The Internet data transmission/reception apparatus 60 comprises a modulator 61 which is consisted of a hard disk 600, video adapter 700, D/A converter 800.
The video adapter 700 further comprises a graphic engine 701, frame buffer 702 and MPEG decoder 703. The Internet data transmission/reception apparatus 60 stores MPEG2 stream data transmitted from an administrative server 40 in a hard disk 600, and the stored data are reprocessed as MPEG2 video stream at a predefined time through a controller 900.
Afterwards, the MPEG2 video stream are converted to National Television Systems
Committee (NTSC) analogue data by a D/A converter 800 via a frame buffer 702 and are transmitted to a signal sharing apparatus. The signal sharing apparatus 80 receives the functional service of the Internet data transmission/reception apparatus 60 in each office or home through a TV via the modulator 61.
The Internet data transmission/reception apparatus 60 can be implemented with any one of the existing systems including PSTN, ISDN, ADSL, coaxial cable, optical cable, satellite reception and receives data through a device selected by one of the systems among TCP/IP MODEM, LAN card, satellite receiver.
This functional service of the Internet data transmission reception apparatus 60 can be identified with the function of a set-top box. Unlike the conventional system where a set-top box is installed at the user's terminal, the present invention receives Internet data tlirough a signal sharing apparatus and afterwards transmits to the users through a distribution means of the signal sharing apparatus.
According to the present invention, the information service using the Internet can be available through a change to a channel which was designated as the Internet TV channel on a TV set without relying on an Internet browser or a separate set-top box. The present invention provides a dedicated TV channel to any resident in an apartment or building complex using a local line and the dedicated TV channel can be operated as a commercially by automatically charging a certain amount of fees every time an advertisement is broadcast. Finally, according to the present invention, the living information and real-time moving image advertisements available in the Web pages of the Internet can be received by a television set located at home without the requirement of a set-top box. This object can be achieved by installing an Internet data transmission/reception apparatus that functions as a set-top box in a signal sharing apparatus which is located in a motel, office, apartment and building complex in order to be able to transmit data to the user's terminal.

Claims

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A method for providing information using the Internet, comprising the steps of: transmitting a database to an Internet information server; transmitting the data from the Internet infoπnation server to a signal sharing apparatus installed at an apartment complex, hotel, motel and other buildings where the users are located; designating a dedicated Internet TV channel from a blank channel available to the users in order to be able to receive the data transmitted from the signal sharing apparatus; and transmitting the data to the user's individual terminal via a local line as the user selects the dedicated Internet TV channel.
2. A method for providing information using the Internet, comprising the steps of: transmitting a database to an Internet information server; transmitting the data from the Internet infonnation server to a signal sharing apparatus installed at an apartment complex, hotel, motel and other buildings where the users are located; converting the digital information received by said signal sharing apparatus to an analogue signal; designating a dedicated Internet TV channel from a blank channel available to the users in order to be able to receive the data transmitted from said signal sharing apparatus; and transmitting the data to the user's individual terminal via a local line as the user selects the dedicated Internet TV channel.
3. An apparatus for providing information using the Internet, comprising: a data server which transmits a collected multicast service information in the forai of a predefined format to a network; an administrative server which updates the data stored in said data server and transmits service infonnation to the Internet; an Internet data transmission/reception apparatus installed on a signal sharing apparatus in a building which receives the service information from said administrative server and controls the transmission of the service information to a TV set and personal computer; and a signal sharing apparatus which accepts the input/output signals from said Internet data transmission/reception apparatus and connects a local terminal to a line interface and outputs visual and voice signals through a modulator.
4. The apparatus as claimed in Claim 3, wherein said Internet data transmission/reception apparatus further comprises PSTN.
5. The apparatus as claimed in Claim 3, wherein said Internet data transmission/reception apparatus further comprises ISDN.
6. The apparatus as claimed in Claim 3, wherein said Internet data transmission/reception apparatus further comprises a coaxial cable.
7. The apparatus as claimed in Claim 3, wherein said Internet data transmission/reception apparatus further comprises an optical cable.
The apparatus as claimed in Claim 3, wherein said Internet data transmission/reception apparatus further comprises a satellite receiver.
9. The apparatus as claimed in Claim 3, wherein said Internet data transmission/reception apparatus further comprises a wireless LAN.
10. The apparatus as claimed in Claim 3, wherein said Internet data transmission/reception apparatus further comprises a MODEM.
11. The apparatus as claimed in Claim 3, wherein said Internet data transmission/reception apparatus further comprises a LAN card.
12. The apparatus as claimed in any one of Claims 3 to Claim 11, wherein said Internet data transmission/reception apparatus further comprises a hard-disk and video adapter which interface with the Internet in order to output data through a modulator.
13. The apparatus as claimed in Claim 12, wherein said output data is in a digital format so as to be inputted to said modulator.
14. The apparatus as claimed in Claim 12, wherein said output data in a digital format is converted to a analogue data to be outputted through said modulator.
