Abstract

A method and apparatus for determining the permeability of a sample. The method includes providing the sample (6) in a receptacle (2, 4) so as to provide a headspace (7) between the sample (6) and part of the receptacle (2), introducing a predetermined volume of a first gas into the headspace and subsequently monitoring the change in concentration of the first gas and/or a second gas in the headspace. The method and apparatus are particularly suitable for determining the permeability of a soil sample.
