Definitions

  • This invention relates to a method for the issuing and distribution of personalised tokens and, more particularly, but not exclusively, to a method for the issuing and distribution of bank cards.
  • Personalised tokens such as bank cards are generally issued with the bearer's details recorded and stored thereon, either on a magnetic strip in the case of a magnetic card, or in a storage memory in the case of a so- called "smart card”.
  • the tokens are designed to be used in various applications, such as an automated teller (ATM) network of a financial institution, or a point-of-sale
  • ATM automated teller
  • a personalised token can be either in an active state in which the token may be used in the application, or an inactive state in which the token is disabled for use in the application.
  • PIN personal identity number
  • the PIN is generally a randomly-generated number.
  • tokens are in an active state at issue, and the issued tokens are delivered to their intended users by post or other similar distribution channel.
  • the associated PINs are delivered either together with the corresponding tokens, or delivered later by means of the same distribution method.
  • a method for issuing and distributing personalised tokens comprising the steps of: issuing a personalized token, together with a corresponding PIN and an activation code, the token having an operational status which is either active when the token is enabled for use, or inactive when the token is disabled for use; delivering the issued token and the corresponding PIN to an intended user of the token, the status of the token being set to be inactive prior to delivery thereof; separately delivering the corresponding activation code to the intended user of the token; submitting the activation code and the PIN by means of a user access facility, upon receipt thereof; and altering the operational status of the token to be active if the submitted activation code is valid.
  • Further features of the invention provide for the method to include the further step of providing identification data, prior to issuing of the token, relating to the intended user; for including at least a postal address and a unique electronic messaging address in the identification data; for delivering the issued token to the intended user by mail, and for separately delivering the corresponding activation code to the intended use of by electronic mail.
  • Still further features of the invention provide for generating the activation code as a random a number, for the method of to include the further step of notifying the intended user of a change of the operational status of the token to active, and for notifying the intended user of activation of the token by means of electronic mail.
  • Yet further features of the invention provide for including in the identification data the name of the intended user of the token, the date of birth of the intended user, and a corresponding identity number of the intended user.
  • FIG. 1 is a flow diagram of the steps in a method for issuing and ' distributing a personalized token, according to the invention.

  • the identification data includes, as a minimum set, a name and postal address of the intended user, as well as unique electronic messaging address in the form of an Internet e-mail address. Additional identification data may also be provided, such as a telephone contact number, a date of birth of the intended user, as well as an identity or social security number or the like.
  • the identification data is then, optionally, checked, at (2), against identification data of already issued personalised tokens in order to eliminate the possibility of issuing a second token to a user who is already in possession of such a token.

  • the operational status of the issued token is either active, in which the token is enabled for use, or inactive, in which the token is disabled for use. It is an essential aspect of this invention that the operational status of the personalised token be set to inactive at the stage of issue.
  • the issued token and the associated PIN are delivered (4) to the postal address of the intended user by mail, while the intended user is notified by e-mail that the token has been dispatched by mail.

  • the user is required to submit (6) the PIN and the e-mailed activation code by means of an access facility in the form of an Internet Web site.
  • the submitted activation code is the validated by an application server, and the operational status of the issued token is changed from inactive to active if the activation code is found to be valid.
  • Use of the token at an automated teller machine or a point of sale terminal, without activation in this manner will result in the token being retained as a result of use of a token whose operational status is inactive.
  • the user is notified by e-mail that the operational status of the token is active, and the user may then utilise the token as desired.
  • this method of issuing and distributing a personalised token to a user prevents the physical token and its associated PIN from being intercepted during distribution, and fraudulently used by an unauthorised party, as the activation code is communicated to the user separately by means of a different distribution channel.
  • the use of both mail and e-mail as distribution channels for delivery of the various elements of the token ensures consistency of both the physical and e-mail addresses of the user of the token.
  • Successful activation of the token provides confirmation that the various components of the token, namely the physical token itself, and the associated PIN and activation code have been received by the intended user.
  • the invention therefore provides a method of issuing and distributing personalised tokens which offers greater security against interception than prior art equivalents.
