Abstract

The invention is directed towards a system and method for permitting content having usage rules (14), such as downloadable digital music, to be shared between one or more devices. The invention permits the downloaded digital music to be shared among users with different devices without violating the usage restrictions (16) placed on the music. The system includes using a public and private key encryption system (24) to ensure that the usage rights are not violated.
