Description

IDENTIFICATION OF THE PARTIES IN A TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEM
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to telecommuni- cation systems. In particular, the invention relates to a method for the identification of the parties connected with a service transaction in a telecommunication system which comprises a telecommunication network, a terminal device that is in connection with the telecommunication network, a transaction device that is in connection with the telecommunication network, an identification device from which there is a connection to the transaction device, a telecommunication connection that has been arranged between the terminal device and the transaction device, and an identification facility. In the method, a service is selected on the terminal device, and the terminal device is used in the transaction.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The undeniable advantage of a mobile communication network, e.g. a GSM system (GSM, Global System for Mobile communications) as compared with a public switched telephone network (PSTN, Public Switched Telephone Network) is the mobility management. In this application, a mobile communication network is advantageously used to mean a digital mobile network. The mobile communication network enables one to establish and receive phone calls anywhere in the coverage area of the network. Since the introduction of the digital mobile networks the services provided have included a short message service (SMS, Short Message Service) .
By means of a mobile communication network, e.g. a GSM system, it is possible to implement many different services. Moreover, the mobile station en- ables one to conduct, e.g. bank services and control different service automates.
The prerequisite for a service transaction is the fact that the transmission of information is pos- sible between the different parties of the service. In a more simplified service transaction it is enough to arrange the data transfer from the paying party to the recipient of the payment. More complicated service transactions may require transmission of information between both of the service parties. This kind of service transaction is possible only in a case when the transmission of information has been arranged in both ways .
In a service transaction, e.g. when paying at a cash counter, a situation may emerge where one should be able to identify a certain service terminal from a bigger group of cash counters . A further problem is the fact of how to identify or individualize the mobile station of the paying user by the service terminal in a transaction.
OBJECTIVE OF THE INVENTION
The objective of the invention is to eliminate the drawbacks mentioned above or at least sig- nificantly alleviate them. One specific objective of the invention is to disclose a new kind of method that makes it possible to identify the parties of a certain service transaction unambiguously and this way enable the function of the service. As for the features characteristic of the invention, reference is made to them in the claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The method in accordance with the invention relates to the identification of the parties connected with a service transaction in a telecommunication sys- tern. The telecommunication system comprises a telecommunication network, a terminal device that is in connection with the telecommunication network, and a transaction device that is in connection with the telecommunication network. In addition, the telecommunication system comprises an identification device from which there is a connection to the transaction device, a telecommunication connection that has been arranged between the terminal device and the transac- tion device, and an identification facility. In the method, a service is selected on the terminal device, and the terminal device is used in the transaction.
In accordance with the invention, details identifying the terminal device are stored on the identification facility. The terminal device is advantageously used to mean a mobile station. The identifying details include, e.g. the MSISDN number (MSISDN, Mobile Subscriber Integrated Services Digital Network) of the mobile station and/or the public key referring to the terminal device or the user of the terminal device. The identifying details may also refer to another data or identifier by means of which it is possible to unambiguously identify the terminal device. This kind of identifier is, e.g. the IP address (IP, Internet Protocol) .
An identification facility is used to mean, e.g. a bar code card. By means of the identification facility the aforementioned identifying details are transmitted via the identification device to the transaction device. By transaction device is meant, e.g. a teller terminal. The identification device is, e.g. a bar code reader from which there is a connection to the teller terminal. The identification device and the transaction device are not necessarily con- nected to one another, instead the connection between them may be arranged, e.g. via a suitable telecommuni- cation network. This kind of telecommunication network is, e.g. the Internet.
The terminal device is identified based on the identifying details received by the transaction device. The identification is done, e.g. based on the MSISDN number or the IP address. The identification facility is not necessarily a separate device or a card, instead it is possible that it has been connected to form a part of the terminal device. The identification facility may be, e.g. a transponder which is part of the terminal device or which has been included, e.g. in a smart card. The transponder is a component which upon receiving a certain signal automatically responds with a predetermined answer-back signal to the source.
The terminal device may be identified by the transaction device, e.g. via a telecommunication connection or a telecommunication network. A telecommunication connection is advantageously used to mean a Bluetooth connection. Bluetooth is a short-range radio network. The telecommunication connection may also mean an infrared connection. In that case, the transaction device and the terminal device are provided with facilities to receive and send information via the infrared connection. The telecommunication network is advantageously used to mean a mobile communication network or an IP based network, e.g. the Internet. By way of the telecommunication connection or the telecommunication network, service-bound information may be transmitted between the transaction device and the terminal device. It is possible to encrypt the data transfer between the transaction device and the terminal device.
Thanks to the present invention, it is possi- ble to unambiguously identify the different parties of a service transaction. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
In the following section, the invention will be described in detail by way of examples of its embodiments, in which Fig. 1 represents one example of a system in which the method in accordance with the invention may be implemented.
Fig. 2 is a signaling flow chart illustrating the function of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Fig. 1 represents one advantageous example of a system in which the method in accordance with the invention may be implemented. The method as illus- trated in Fig. 1 comprises terminal device TE which has been connected to the telecommunication network NETWORK. The terminal device in this example is a mobile station. The system comprises a transaction device TL, an identification device DET and identifica- tion facility IE. Between the transaction device TL and the terminal device TE there is a telecommunication connection BT arranged that is advantageously based on the Bluetooth technique. The telecommunication connection may also be an infrared connection. It is possible to connect a Bluetooth apparatus capable of sending and receiving information to the transaction device, e.g. by means of a serial interface RS232. The Bluetooth technique is described in greater detail at the address www.bluetooth. com. The transac- tion device may also be connected to the telecommunication network NETWORK, which is advantageously a mobile communication network. The telecommunication network NETWORK may also refer to the world-wide Internet network . From the identification device DET there is a connection to the transaction device TL. The identifi- cation device DET and the transaction device TL may be directly connected to one another, or the connection between them may be arranged, e.g. via the Internet network. In this example, the identification device DET is used to mean a bar code reader, and the transaction device TL a teller terminal. The identification facility IE is advantageously a smart card or a card that contains a certain bar code . The bar code includes information of the terminal equipment TE and/or its user. The user-specific information relate, e.g. to the public key. By means of the identification device DET, information may be found out that has been included in the identification facility IE.
In an embodiment of Fig. 1, the identifica- tion facility IE is a transponder. Transponder is a component which upon receiving a certain signal automatically responds with a predetermined answer-back signal to the source. It is also possible that the transponder has been integrated with the terminal de- vice TE. By means of the identification device DET it is possible to receive the identifying details relating to the terminal device TE and/or its user transmitted by the transponder.
The example as illustrated in Fig. 2, com- prises an identification facility IE, an identification device DET, a transaction device TL, and a terminal device TE.
On the identification facility there is information stored or otherwise included relating to the user and/or the terminal device TE . The information may concern, e.g. a number connected with the terminal device, e.g. a MSISDN number, or an IP address. Also the public key referring to a terminal device TE and/or a user may be included as a part of the identi- fying details.
As shown by arrow 20, the identification device DET receives a message from the identification facility IE. If the identification facility IE is a bar code card, the bar code reader DET transmits the details included in the bar code to the transaction device TL. The transaction device TL is advantageously used to mean a teller terminal. The identification facility IE may alternatively be, e.g. a transponder which responds to the signal transmitted by the identification device TL. The identification device TL sends the details received from the identification fa- cility IE to the transaction device TL, arrow 21. The details may include, e.g. the MSISDN number of the terminal equipment TE, the IP address, or the public key referring to the terminal device or its user. Due to the details received, the transaction device TL may unambiguously identify the terminal device, e.g. by means of the Bluetooth connection, arrow 22. The transaction device TL may, in a transaction as illustrated by arrow 22, send also other information to the terminal device TE, e.g. its public key. It is possi- ble to encrypt the data transfer between the transaction device TL and the terminal device TE by using, e.g. a public key infrastructure. The identification facility IE may also be attached as a part of the terminal device TE . In that case, the identification fa- cility IE has been integrated, e.g. with the inside of the terminal device TE, or attached to the external surface of the terminal device TE.
The invention is not restricted to the examples of its embodiments presented above, instead many variations are possible within the scope of the inventive idea defined by the claims.
