Abstract

A computer implemented method for improving continuity of data streaming of different types of multimedia messages and at different data transfer rates from a source computer through a communication channel to an output device of a target computer coupled to the source computer via the communication channel. A source computer obtains a throughput level of data packets to be sent to the target computer, and dynamically adjusts a data compression rate based on the throughput level. Streaming data may be embedded within a conventional HTTP data packet so as to be passed without hindrance by a firewall associated with the source computer or the target computer. Successive data packets of the multimedia messages may be analyzed by the source computer in order to determine for each data packet whether there exists at least one empty portion corresponding to an absence of information for at least a predetermined time duration. Compressed data packets are created wherein each empty portion is omitted, its location within the data packet and its duration being sent to the target for reconstitution thereby.
