Abstract

An intravascular device (802) and method of constructing an intravascular device (802). The device (802) has a proximal portion which is stiffer than a distal portion. The device (802) may be advanced through small vessels without the aid of a guidewire although a guidewire may be used when necessary. A preferred method of manufacture uses a liner (804) made of expanded PTFE at the distal portion (828) and etched PTFE at the proximal portion (830). The device (802) has a number of different jacket sections (846, 848, 850, 852, 854, 856), preferably at least four, with increasing durometer extending towards the proximal end of the device (802), and a braided section (808) with varying pic along the length of the device (802).
