Description

Method and system for holding a creativity session.
The invention relates to a method and system for holding a creativity session.
Creativity sessions are meetings of a number of persons having the purpose of finding solutions or fresh solutions for specific problems. The term brainstorming meetings is also used. Usually, the participants gather, under the leadership of a session leader, in a meeting room, but brainstorming may also be done in a telephone conference .
In such creativity sessions, whether by telephone or not, there sometimes arises a situation in which the participants, or at any rate some participants, are "empty", i.e., are temporarily unable to form still new ideas. The creativity session may then end up at a dead end without the purpose of the meeting already having been achieved. It then is the task of the discussion leader to (once again) stimulate the creative capacity of the participants in order as yet, if possible, to achieve the envisaged purpose of the meeting. A problem here is that of course it is by no means certain that the discussion leader will actually succeed in doing so.
Another drawback of the known creativity sessions is that the participants should be able to physically join one another, as a result of which the circle of potential participants is limited. In addition, it is possible that certain participants feel themselves inhibited in the presence of certain other participants, e.g., as a result of an existing hierarchical relationship, which does not advance the purpose of the session. A drawback of participating in a creativity session by telephone is that the contact and the mutual stimulation of the participants take place through one sense only, namely, the hearing. Furthermore, in the usual sessions the contributions of the participants are lost afterwards. The object of the invention is to provide a method and system, with the help of which the creativity of the participants in a creativity session may be, and continue to be, optimally stimulated, it being unnecessary for the participants to physically be in one and the same room. According to the invention, for this purpose a method for holding a creativity session, with a number of participants thinking up and recording possible solutions for a problem imposed, is characterised in that each participant is provided with a client terminal; that the client terminals are coupled, by way of a communications network, to one another and to a server; that in the server there is activated a program which makes it possible on the screens of the client terminals to display an annotation field on which the participants may enter alphanumeric or graphic information, with the information entered being capable of being transmitted to the other client terminals and the server; that in addition in the server there is activated a program which makes it possible, using suitable support software in the client terminals , to show a virtual environment as background of the annotation sheet on the screens in the client terminals, in which the participants have been designated symbolically; and that during the creativity session there is initiated a change in the virtual background at least once. A system for holding a creativity session according to the invention is characterised by a number of client terminals which are coupled, by way of a communications network, to one another and to a server, the server and the client terminals being constructed to display, on the screens of the client terminals, a virtual environment in which the participants are represented by symbols, as well as to display an annotation field on the screens in which the participants may enter alphanumeric or graphic information, the client terminals being provided with means to transmit the information entered to the other client terminals, and the server being provided with a session memory for storing text generated by the participants, and there being provided means to have changes effected in the virtual environment during a creativity session.
Below, the invention will be described in further detail by reference to the accompanying drawing. FIG. 1 schematically shows an example of a system for holding a creativity session; and
FIG. 2 schematically shows an example of a screen as may be shown to a participant of a creativity session according to the invention. FIG. 1 schematically shows a system for holding a creativity session, comprising a communications network 1, a number of work stations (client terminals) 2 to 6 inclusive coupled to the communications network, and a central computer (server) 7 coupled to the network, which is provided with a memory 8. The client terminals may be located in one and the same building or complex of buildings, but may also be located at places geographically remote from one another. The network may be an internal network, but may also, in whole or in part, be a publicly accessible network such as, e.g., the Internet. Apart from cables, the network may also comprise radio links. In the event of a network accessible to third parties, there may be applied suitable codes in order to prevent that any third parties break into a creativity session. The client terminals and of course the network 1 are preferably constructed in such a manner that between the participants, apart from communication by way of screens of the client terminals, there is also possible speech communication.
Each client terminal comprises a personal or network computer, a keyboard and a video screen. Furthermore, the computers of the client terminals are constructed in such a manner that the functions to be described in further detail of the software installed in the server are supported.
The software applied, also called the creativity program, may be considered as a combination of existing software for the co-operation of persons who are located at various client terminals and software which is capable of displaying a virtual environment on a video screen. Both types of software are known per se. The software intended for co-operation within a group is also designated by the term "groupware", while software which makes it possible that persons imagine themselves in a common virtual graphic environment is also known in various embodiments .
The basic concept behind the invention is that it is possible to stimulate the creativity of participants in a creativity session or brainstorming session by creating a virtual environment on the video screen, in which changes may be effected, whether or not depending on the actual course of the session. Such changes may be events within the virtual environment such as, e.g., the setting of the sun when it becomes dark in the virtual environment, and/or the rising of the moon etc. The changes may also be changes in the nature of the virtual environment, e.g., a change from an urban environment to a country environment or a mountain landscape etc.
The system may be constructed in such a manner that such changes may be initiated by the discussion leader, there still being the option of choosing either the initiation of an unknown change, whose nature is determined by the server, or even choosing the nature of the change . The system may also be constructed in such a manner that the server is capable of autonomously applying changes in the virtual environment. Furthermore, there may be applied a combination of the options indicated. In addition, it is basically possible that others than the discussion leader initiate a change. These might be, e.g., other participants who dispose of a suitable code, or even spectators, i.e. , participants who are not capable of bringing in ideas but who are able to see the contribution of the other participants. There may be thought of, e.g., the one who supplied the problem.
An example of a screen seen by the participants during a creativity session is shown in FIG. 2. The screen 20 shown comprises an annotation field 21 for keying in, by way of the keyboard of the client terminal, ideas, remarks, announcements etc., possibly supplemented by graphic input, such as sketches, flow charts etc. using a mouse. At 22, there is shown a cursor which can be controlled, e.g., by a mouse (not shown), and with the help of which an action may be carried out in the usual manner such as, e.g., the transmission of an idea, or comments, or the recording thereof in the session memory 8 etc.
In the example shown, the annotation field 21 is broken down into three sections 23, 24 and 25. The section 23 may serve, e.g., to display the ideas proposed. In the section 24, there might be placed comments on remarks and/or ideas of other participants, while section 25 may show, e.g., a list of participants.
Since the creativity of participants is sometimes stimulated if they are anonymous and therefore need not feel inhibited by the other participants and/or possible hierarchical relations between the participants, the list of participants may include pseudonyms.
In addition, the participants are symbolically designated in the background portion 26 of the screen; in the example shown by means of objects 27 or stylised figures 28. Such symbols for persons are sometimes called icons or avatars. The avatars may be stationary and unchanging, but they may also be moving pictures and/or changing pictures. It is also possible to use video pictures for the avatars. The background portion 26 of the screen according to the invention represents a virtual environment generated by the server which in the example shown consists of an underwater scene.
One or more participants so authorised, usually at least the discussion leader, may modify the virtual environment or have specific events take place therein with the purpose of (once again) stimulating the creativity of the participants. It may be considered to show an entirely different environment, represented by still or moving (background) pictures. In addition, there is the option that the server itself autonomously has events take place, at predetermined or, conversely, at random points in time, in the virtual environment, and/or changes the latter. All this could be activated on the basis of the contents of the session memory. Thus, e.g., there might be initiated a change by the server or, as an alternative, by the discussion leader, if there have not been recorded any new ideas during a predetermined period of time.
During the creativity session, the information shown in field 21 is also stored in the session memory. At the end of the session, the recording obtained in this manner may then be printed out for the participants and/or, if so desired, stored in the memory of the client terminals of the participants, so that later reference continues to be possible. If so desired, there is also permitted a recording of the speech or other audio signals. It should be noted here that, after the above, to those skilled in the art there are obvious various additions and modifications. Thus, the virtual environment may of course have any desired realistic or surrealistic shape. The annotation field, too, may have any desired shape and position, and be provided, or not, with predetermined patterns. Furthermore, at the beginning of a session the participants may of course be provided with an explanation, by way of the video screens, of the purpose and the rough course of the session, whether or not combined with several exercise actions. Said and similar modifications shall be deemed to fall within the framework of the invention.
