Abstract

A method and apparatus for processing and managing requests for service of a physical facility is disclosed. In one embodiment, a system for managing requests for service of a facility comprises a monitor window displayed on a display device (112); a network connecting the display device to a processor (104); and a memory (106) coupled to the processor. A database of service requests, and processor instructions coupled to the database are stored in the memory (106). The processor instructions are configured to cause the processor (104) to enter the service requests in the database, and display the service requests in the monitor window (Fig. 6) over the network when the service requests are entered into the database.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS [received by the International Bureau on 1 July 1999 (01.07.99); original claims 1-4, 6-9, 11, 12 and 14-19 amended; new claims 20-23 added; remaining claims unchanged (4 pages)]
1. A system for managing requests for service of a facility, comprising: a monitor window displayed on a display device of a first machine; a network connecting said first machine to a second machine that has a processor; and one or more storage devices accessible to said processor and having stored therein: a database of service requests, wherein said service requests are requests for service of said facility; processor instructions configured to cause said processor to: enter said service requests in said database; and display said service requests in said monitor window over said network in response to receiving said service requests to be entered into said database.
2. The system recited in claim 1 , further comprising: a browser coupled to said display device; a browser registry coupled to said browser, wherein the browser registry comprises data that identifies display devices that are currently activated; and wherein said processor instructions are configured to cause said processor to store a description of said browser in said browser registry.
3. The system recited in claim 2, wherein said processor instructions are configured to cause said processor to generate and send an electronic mail message to said browser in response to receiving a new service request to be stored in said database.
4. The system recited in claim 3, wherein said new service request comprises an Assigned
To value identifying a host of a service person assigned to carry out said new service request, and wherein said instructions are configured to: store said new request in said database; and generate and send a second electronic mail message to said host in response to receiving said new service request to be stored in said database.
5. The system of claim 1 , wherein said memory further comprises a database interface coupled between said database and said processor, wherein said database interface is configured to translate a database request of said processor into a database command compatible with said database.
6. The system recited in claim 4, further comprising: a servlet coupled between said database and said processor, wherein said servlet is a specialized software component that is activated when needed to cany out a specific function; wherein said instructions are configured to cause said servlet to communicate said second electronic mail message to said display device.
7. The system recited in claim 5, wherein said instructions are configured to: close said new service request; generate an evaluation message for evaluating how the service request was carried out; and deliver said evaluation message to said display device.
8. The system recited in claim 2, wherein said instructions are configured to: enter a new service request in said database; and in response to receiving said new service request to be entered in said database, displaying said new service request in said monitor window when a technician assigned to said new service request is using said display device that is registered in said browser registry.
9. A method of managing requests for service of a facility, comprising the steps of: entering said service requests in a database; and displaying said service requests in a monitor window over a network in response to receiving said service requests to be entered into said database.
10. The method recited in claim 9, further comprising the steps of: registering, in a browser registry coupled to a browser that is coupled to a display device and to said network, a description of said browser.
11. The method recited in claim 10, further comprising the steps of: generating an electronic mail message to said browser in response to receiving a new service request to be stored in said database.
12. The method recited in claim 10, further comprising the steps of: storing an Assigned To value identifying a host of a service person assigned to carry out said new service request; storing said new service request in said database; and generating a second electronic mail message to said host in response to receivin said new service request to be stored in said database.
13. The method recited in claim 9, further comprising the steps of: providing an element to establish a database interface coupled between said database and a processor; and translating, using said database interface, a database request of said processor into a
14. The method recited in claim 11 , further comprising the step of: providing an element to establish a servlet coupled between said database and a processor, wherein said servlet is a specialized software component that is activated when needed to carry out a specific function; and communicating, using said servlet, said second electronic mail message to said display device.
15. The method recited in claim 12, further comprising the steps of: closing said new service request; generating an evaluation message for evaluating how the service request was carried out; and _ delivering said evaluation message to said display device.
16. The method recited in claim 10, further comprising the step of: entering a new service request in said database; and in response to receiving said new service request to be entered in said database, displaying said new service request in said monitor window when a technician assigned to said new service request is using said display device that is registered in said browser registry.
17. A computer readable medium carrying one or more sequences of one or more instructions for managing requests for service of a facility, the one or more sequences of one or more instructions comprising instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform the steps of: entering said service requests in a database; and displaying said service requests in a monitor window over a network in response to receiving said service requests to be entered into said database.
18. The computer readable medium recited in claim 17, further comprising instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, establish a browser registry coupled to a browser coupled to a display device and comprising data that identifies display devices that are currently activated, and that store a description of said browser in said browser registry.
1 . The computer readable medium recited in claim 18, further comprising instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, enter a new service request in said database, and in response to said new service request being entered in said database, displaying said new service request in said monitor window when a technician assigned to said new service request is using said display device that is registered in said browser registry.
20. The system of Claim 1 , wherein said system further comprises: a third machine; and wherein a service request is submitted to said second machine using said third machine and wherein said server request was on the display device in said first machine in response to said service request being received at said second machine.
21. The system of Claim 1 , wherein said system further comprises processor instructions to cause said processor to: ~ determine whether the monitor window is currently open on the display device; and automatically open the monitor window if not currently open.
22. The method of Claim 9, wherein the step of displaying said service request includes the steps of: deteπnining whether the monitor window is currently open on the display device; and automatically opening the monitor window if not currently open.
23. The computer readable medium recited in Claim 17, wherein the step of displaying said service request includes the steps of: deteimining whether the monitor window is currently open on the display device; and automatically opening the monitor window if not currently open.
